Welcome Back, Whittier Families

We are so excited to get back to school. The first day of school will be Wednesday, August 16th. this will be a to 2:00 dismissal. The staff is eager to welcome you back and start learning. We made growth in our performance last year and know that it will continue this year as we all work hard together. Another goal for this year is to increase our daily attendance and lower the amount of students who are chronically absent. Students cannot work to their potential if they are not in school. We know it is going to be a wonderful year and look forward to working with you. If you have any questions , please stop by our school office from 8:30-3:30 or feel free to call us at 627-6400.

August 14 from 10:00-6:00 and August 15 from 9:00-12:00

Our goal is to meet with every family before school starts!!! On August 14 and 15 , we are inviting parents and students to the building to meet with their teacher. This will give students an opportunity to visit their classrooms, meet their teacher and make sure they are ready to start the first day. Parents will be able to ask questions and get help filling out important paperwork. Whittier staff will be contacting you to schedule a time for you and your child to come in.

Attendance

Students are more likely to success if they attend school regularly. Kansas State Law states children must attend school. Students are considered truant if they are absent 3 unexcused days in a row, 5 unexcused days in a school semester or 7 unexcused days in a school year. It is essential that you contact the if your child is going to be absent.

We are concerned when ever students miss school for any reason because we know that it impacts their education. Students are considered chronically absent if they miss more than 10 percent of the days which is just 2 days in a month. Our goal is our students to be here on a regular basis. Let us know what we can do to help.

Arrival

Students may arrive between 8:35 and 8:50 for breakfast. No one should be at school before 8:35 as there is no supervision before this time and students will not be able to enter the school building. If your child arrives after the 9:00 bell, they will need to enter through the office area to obtain a tardy slip so that they are not counted absent.

Dismissal

  • It is important that children and their teachers are 100% clear on how they are supposed to go home each day.
  • Kindergarten students and their siblings will dismiss on the east side of the building. Those waiting for students on this side of the building are directed to wait outside of the fenced area.
  • All other students will dismiss out the front or west side of the building. Those waiting on this side are asked to wait on the edge of the playground.
  • The bus lane to the south of the school is reserved for buses only during dismissal. Cars may not park in the bus lane. If you plan on traveling through the bus lane you may need to wait for busses to leave or be asked to move.
  • If you ever need to change your dismissal routine, parents must communicate this with the school. We cannot change dismissal procedure based on what a student tells us. You may do this by sending a note, contacting the teacher or calling the office.

ASQ for Kindergarten Students

All students entering kindergarten are required to take a kindergarten readiness assessment for the state of Kansas. If you did not do this at kindergarten round up, please click on the link below. You will need to complete 2 assessments. After you complete the first one there will be a link to the second assessment. If you not completed this by August 14, you will be asked to complete it at your Family Advocacy meeting.
