Introducing BARK: Building Academic Reasoning and Knowledge
George Walton Academy is proud to launch BARK: Building Academic Reasoning and Knowledge, a new enrichment program designed for qualifying students in grades 3–5. This initiative challenges learners to extend their critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills through engaging, high-level tasks. In the opening session, Mrs. Schnieders and Mrs. Fulmer introduced students to a BREAKOUTedu activity with breakout boxes. To succeed, students were required to analyze clues, recognize patterns, and collaborate to unlock five different locks.
This exercise emphasized academic reasoning, teamwork, and persistence, aligning with BARK’s mission to foster deeper cognitive engagement. By starting the year with such a rigorous challenge, students experienced firsthand how BARK will provide opportunities to apply knowledge in meaningful ways that extend beyond the traditional classroom setting.
An Apple-Filled Week
K3 students in Ms. Jennifer’s and Ms. Missy’s class recently enjoyed an apple-filled week! From painting with and weighing apples to exploring the life cycle, tasting and graphing, and even creating their own classroom orchard - our youngest Bulldogs discovered it all. The week wrapped up on a sweet note with baking individual apple pies!
Where Honor Leads
At George Walton Academy, honor is at the heart of who we are. Each year, middle and high school students dress professionally and gather in advisory to sign the GWA Honor Code, pledging their commitment to integrity, respect, and citizenship. This special tradition reminds our community that honor is more valuable than any accomplishment and sets the standard for how we treat one another.
By signing the honor code, students, as well as, faculty and staff, pledge the following:
“Bound by our honor, we, the students of George Walton Academy, will not lie, cheat, steal or plagiarize. Embodying the highest ethical standards and citizenship, we shall honor and respect George Walton Academy, other students, all school faculty, parents and others associated with the Academy without regard to race, ethnicity, sex or religion.”
This pledge serves as a daily reminder to always focus on developing strong character and uphold the values that make GWA a place of trust and respect.

Homecoming Friday is Sept. 19, and Pink Out will be the following Friday, Sept. 26. We are offering a special t-shirt for both events. As a reminder, all proceeds from the Pink Out t-shirt sales go to our very own, GWA Cure Dawgs, which provides scholarships to students who are affected by cancer personally or a parent in their household. If you are interested, please click on the link and follow all ordering instructions. It is very important that you include a student name and teacher/grade. This helps us to get the shirts passed out in a timely manner.
Please note, there will NOT be any shirts available for purchase in the Dawg Shop and due to the quick turnaround in ordering so that we have them in time. Scotteez will NOT be able to add any additional shirts on after the shop has closed. With that said, the shop closes TODAY at 11:59PM. Do not delay if you want a shirt!
Club Expo is Sept. 10!
Middle and upper school students will have the opportunity to check out the wide range of student-led clubs and organizations at the upcoming Club Expo event. Our clubs offer something for every student and are the perfect way to get involved at GWA and in the community.
Important Change to Aftercare Pickup
Dear Aftercare Families, We hope you're having a great start to the school year. We want to let you know about a small but important change to our aftercare pickup procedure.
Starting Monday, September 15, aftercare pickup will be moved to the Upper School. Please enter the campus from Spring Street and turn left onto Kawonka Lane. Pick-up will be in front of the Upper School Building. This change is being made to improve safety and traffic flow. The school is working to reduce traffic congestion between The George and the cafeteria in the afternoons. With so many activities happening on campus after school, moving the pickup area will help reduce congestion and make the end of the day smoother for all families.
Please note that all other aftercare procedures will remain the same. A quick reminder: If your child is or will be attending aftercare, please be sure to register them using this form:
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to make our campus as safe and efficient as possible.
Warmly,
Lisa McDaniel and Chelsea Byrd
College Connections
Each year the GWA campus hosts a number of admissions representatives from colleges and universities around the country. These representatives hold informal meetings for our upper school students in the Learning Center throughout the fall and early spring, providing an opportunity for students to ask questions, check on application requirements and get to know these colleges a little better. Upper school freshmen through seniors are encouraged to engage and practice their conversational skills while learning about opportunities and programs at the collegiate level.
