District Safety Information

District Safety Information
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the 2025-26 school year. The purpose of this letter is to outline some of the major components of Millard’s school safety and security plans. The District Safety and Security Committee along with local law enforcement and first responders spend extensive time and resources reviewing and updating our safety practices and procedures annually. The District Safety Committee meets monthly to discuss and resolve safety-related issues. In addition, we have representatives meet twice a month with both Douglas and Sarpy County Threat Advisory Teams.
One of the major functions of the District Safety Committee is to develop and implement the District’s Emergency Operations Plan (EOP). The EOP consists of a variety of safety-related practices and responses that are aligned with the school safety continuum of Prevention, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery. One key component of the District EOP is the Standard Response Protocol (SRP).
The SRP is a series of clear, concise, and repeatable protocols designed to facilitate immediate emergency response actions. The SRP protocols are deployed by all schools and local law enforcement agencies. The SRP consists of five key actions: HOLD, SECURE, LOCKDOWN, EVACUATE, and SHELTER. Below is a more detailed description of each action. We encourage you to discuss these actions with your student(s) to ensure understanding.
Another protocol outlined in our EOP is known as RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. This protocol promotes decisive decision making and action based on the circumstances one might face during an active life-threatening emergency event. Please review these procedures with your student(s) as well. You can find more detailed information about the Continuum of School Safety, Standard Response Protocol, and Run, Hide, Fight by exploring these resources: https://rems.ed.gov, https://www.education.ne.gov/safety, http://iloveuguys.org, and https://www.ready.gov.
No emergency operations plan is effectively implemented without training and practice. Each school’s administrative team spends time reviewing and practicing the prevention and response actions contained in the school’s EOP. Some examples of the drills they conduct are evacuation, reverse evacuation, reunification, shelter in place, lockdowns, and secure. These training events are evaluated and reviewed by administrative staff and our local first responders. In addition to the school and district training events, our local first responders also schedule training in our facilities to ensure their familiarity with the school, the grounds, and our procedures.
Because I cannot fully explain all the safety measures within this letter, I have listed some additional measures we take below for your reference.
We hope you find this information helpful, and that it provides some insight into the processes and procedures we have in place to keep students and staff safe. Thank you for trusting us with the education and safety of your student(s).
Sincerely,
Bill Jelkin
Executive Director of Student Services and School Safety
