WEEKLY RECAP
Last week, our 8th grade ELA students engaged in a Socratic Seminar focused on their choice books and the theme of resilience. Students demonstrated strong discussion skills while sharing thoughtful insights and perspectives. We also welcomed Mr. Bryant, from UMB Bank, as part of our Finance Career Speaker Series, where students gained valuable knowledge and career insights in the field of finance.
This week, students showcased their creativity through their Rabbit Hole Exhibit Designs. Great work to all who presented! Congrats to Emma Hobick, Marilyn Myers, Katie Hennessy, Cooper Finn, & Harry Montgomery on taking home the Innovation Award!
We also celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week, recognizing the incredible educators who make Hills such a special place. Their dedication, compassion, and energy make a lasting impact on our students and school community. Please join us in thanking our teachers for all they do!
ARTISTS OF THE WEEK
ATHLETICS
On Monday evening, Boys Soccer traveled to Hocker Grove, where A team defeated the Eagles 1-0 and B team fell 2-1. We’re looking forward to our next competition at home on Monday 5/11! Good Luck Knights!
Come support your Knights in action! Check out the full calendar of events HERE!
ATTENDANCE
Spring Fever is REAL… but attendance still matters!
As the weather warms up and summer gets closer, it’s easy for middle school students to feel that “spring fever”—wanting to sleep in, hang out with friends, or just take a break from school. Families, you might notice more pushback in the mornings or a drop in motivation.
Here’s the truth: Missing even a few days can make it harder to keep up, especially at the end of the year when everything starts to add up—final projects, tests, and important lessons.
For Students:
Try to stay focused on your goals. You’ve worked hard all year—don’t let spring fever slow you down now! Plan something fun after school or on weekends to give yourself something to look forward to.
For Families:
Keep routines consistent, even when it’s tempting to relax them. Talk with your student about finishing strong and help them stay accountable while still making space for rest and fun.
Balance is key: Enjoy the sunshine AND show up for your future. Every day counts more than you think!
Let’s finish the year strong together!
CLUB HIGHLIGHT - ROBOTICS
Students in Robotics Club have been exploring new ways to build drag racers as well as exploring new ideas for building an elevator.
COLOR RUN INFO
The Color Run will take place on Tuesday, May 19th, at the end of the school day as a fun celebration for all students!
Students are encouraged to wear white and should only bring a water bottle to school that day. If students bring a lunch, it should be completely disposable. Please remember that anything brought to school will need to stay with students during the Color Run, as students will not be allowed back into the building afterward.
Students will not be dismissed during the Color Run. If your student needs to leave for an appointment, please plan to check them out before 1:00.
We’re excited for a fun way to celebrate the end of the school year!
COLOR RUN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
We’re gearing up for an unforgettable last day of school with our Color Run—and we need your help to make it happen! This fun, high-energy celebration lets students run, laugh, and get covered in colorful powder as we send off the school year in style.
We’re looking for parent volunteers to fill a variety of roles, including color throwers, leaf blower crew, water station supervisors, and photo booth helpers. Whether you can help for a little while or the whole event, your support makes a big difference in creating a safe and exciting experience for our kids.

Thank you for helping us make the last day of school so bright and memorable!

JUNIOR BOARD
This week, students from the Indian Hills Middle School Junior Board proudly presented grant checks to the following nonprofit organizations they researched and learned about throughout the year:
CARE BEYOND THE BOULEVARD
YOUTH AMBASSADORS
THE FARMERS HOUSE
THE MISSION PROJECT
GREAT PLAINS SPCA
PAWSPERITY
ASTEAM VILLAGE
CHILD PROTECTION CENTER
This year, IHMSJB awarded a total of $10,000 in grants to these deserving nonprofit organizations. Since 2014, IHMSJB has distributed more than $121,000 in grants to 83 nonprofit organizations.
The mission of the Indian Hills Junior Board is to empower students to support nonprofit organizations by educating members about the nonprofit world and encouraging meaningful community involvement.
KNIGHTS OF EXCELLENCE
We are excited to celebrate our 8th grade students at the Knights of Excellence ceremony on Monday, May 18th in the main gym at Shawnee Mission East.
Families and students should plan to arrive around 6:15 PM, with the program beginning promptly at 6:30 PM. Upon arrival, students will find their Knight Time teacher and sit in their assigned seat, where they will have a program and name card for the evening. Students will be watching this video at school.
The ceremony will begin with a welcome, followed by recognition of student involvement in clubs, activities, and awards. The evening will conclude with the presentation of all 8th grade students, as each student is individually recognized.
Following the ceremony, students are invited to attend the 8th grade dance in the auxiliary gym next door. Families may pick up their student’s award envelope at the tables located between the gyms before the end of the evening. Please note that the dance is for students only. Families should not attend the dance, walk the halls of East, or gather in the vestibule area. If you plan to stay until the end of the dance, we ask that you remain in the main gym or outdoors.
The dance will end promptly at 9:00 PM. Any award envelopes not picked up that evening will be available in the Indian Hills office after May 20th.
If you are unable to attend, or would prefer to watch online, you can join this WebEx.
We look forward to celebrating this special milestone with you!
