Week of Welcome! Community Joy! Week of Welcome! Community Joy!

The San Diego Met students and staff enjoyed a joyful return to school. Our Week of Welcome was filled with community building, games, and reflections on our stories, in which each student and staff member created a digital StoryBoard to print out and display in our Advisory rooms. Here are a few photos from the week!

SD Met is one of America's Healthiest Schools!

We’re honored to be recognized as one of Alliance for a Healthier Generation's 2025 Healthiest Schools! The Met was recognized in the areas of Nutrition & Food Access and Tobacco-Free Schools. This achievement reflects our commitment to creating a healthy, supportive environment for every student, staff member, and family. See the full list of awardees at healthiestschools.org!

Join our School Site Council (SSC) - Nominations due Aug. 25!

We are now taking nominations for parents/guardians and students to be on our School Site Council (SSC)! Are you looking for a chance to provide meaningful input on the Met’s mission of supporting every student, one student at a time? Then join our SSC! The SSC is a group of staff, students, and parents/guardians who meet regularly throughout the school year to review school data and make decisions regarding our budget. Parent/guardian and student representation on the SSC ensures that your voices are included in our decision-making processes. Please email Principal Fung at rfung@sandi.net if you would like to join SSC! Thank you for your support!

Phone-Free School Day Policy is making an impact!

Our new protocol for limiting the distractions from cell phones has been going very well!

Starting on the first day of school, August 4, all students have been expected to put their phone into the designated classroom "Phone Home" containers at the beginning of each class period. We are already seeing positive results in the form of more student engagement with peers and more focus on the learning!

As shared in our previous newsletter, the Met has implemented a Phone-Free School Day Policy that began on the first day of school, Monday, August 4, 2025. Our policy was created in alignment with the district’s cell phone policy, and in accordance with California state law. More details are available at this link.

Water Bottles available for students!

We have had some hot days, and there will certainly be more to come. Please encourage your students to bring a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day. Filling stations are available in I-400 and the SB building, and there is also a water fountain on the exterior of our building, near K208.

In addition, for any student who does not have a reusable water bottle, we have a large supply of new and gently used ones that students are welcome to choose from and keep. Just have them ask for one in the office. Please support your students with staying hydrated while avoiding single-use plastic.

Food on Campus

Free school meals provided by our district will continue to be offered at the Met this year and are available in our office (K203) at the following times:

  • Breakfast from 8:00am – 8:25am daily
  • M/W/F lunch from 12:15pm – 12:45pm
  • T/Th lunch at 11:30am dismissal

Mesa's food options on campus will be limited prior to the college fall semester start date of August 25. To help you prepare your student, please note the scheduled Mesa food service options. Please note that all Mesa food services are currently CLOSED on Fridays.

In addition, students are always welcome to bring lunch from home.

Students are NOT allowed to have food delivered from delivery services (such as DoorDash, GrubHub, Uber Eats, and similar apps). Though we are located on a college campus, the Met is a CLOSED campus, and students are not allowed to leave campus during school hours without permission, nor are food deliveries or other unauthorized visitors allowed. Please ensure that your students bring food or lunch money so that they can eat well, be healthy, and stay focused on their studies!

Seeking Vice President for SD Met Foundation

The San Diego Met Foundation is our non-profit, parent-driven organization that supports the mission of the Met through fundraising and family engagement. We are a small group that meets every other month so the time commitment is low! We are currently seeking a new Vice President for our Foundation, who supports with our bylaws and assists the President with events such as Back to School Night and Met Monday.

Are you looking for a way to support our community and connect with other parents? Consider nominating yourself for Vice President! For more information, please contact our Foundation President, Lindsay Speaker, at lindsayspeaker@gmail.com or 832-427-2286.

School Picture Day - Fri., August 29

Lifetouch Photography will be on campus on Fri, August 29, to take student's photos for ID cards and our yearbook. Please ensure your student is in attendance that day. The makeup picture day is scheduled for Fri, October 3. Parents/guardians of seniors will be sent an email with information on scheduling a senior portrait session.

Attendance Procedures - NEW ATTENDANCE REPORTING FORM!

Regular and timely attendance at school and internships is one of the most important factors for your student’s success! Students who are regularly tardy or absent from one or more classes are missing valuable learning time and are much more likely to fall behind and struggle in their studies. As such, we will be contacting parents/guardians for your support if your student is struggling with attendance.

This year, we are implementing an Attendance Reporting Google Form linked here. This will allow parents to quickly and simply report a student absence. Please use this form any time your student will be absent for any part of the day (including whole day absences, as well as late arrival and early dismissal), as well as for multi-day absences (e.g., vacations, illness).

If you have any questions about attendance, please contact us at sdmet@sandi.net.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Daily Schedule

Please review the regular daily schedule for the school year. All students will attend classes on campus from 8:30am to 3:15pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are dedicated to internships, and ALL students must attend school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:30am. NEW students will participate in the Met Gateway Program on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while RETURNING students will work with their advisor on finding an internship placement. As soon as a student has secured an internship, including a signed contract with the mentor, the student may start attending internship on Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of coming to campus. Our Gateway students are eligible to begin their internships after the conclusion of Gateway, as soon as September 23.

Bring Your CHARGED Chromebook Every Day!

Please remind your students to bring their FULLY CHARGED Chromebooks to school every day! Our district’s 1-to-1 Chromebook policy enables every student to have a Chromebook checked out to them exclusively. This means that every student can take their Chromebook home every day, and it is their responsibility to bring them back to school charged and ready to work on every day. If your student forgets to bring their Chromebook, we unfortunately do not have extras to loan out. Your student will be asked to call home to ask for their Chromebook to be brought to school. If it cannot be brought to school by parent/guardian, the student will be able to work on assignments in an alternative format.

Met Gateway Program for NEW Students

All 9th graders and new transfer students must attend our Gateway program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:30am for the first six weeks of school (starting Tuesday, August 12, and ending Thursday, September 18). LTI Gateway teaches our new students how to search for an internship that aligns to their interests and goals, how to use our internship database platform called ImBlaze, and how to interview for and be successful in an internship. In addition, students will experience the Met 101 course, which teaches the skills that students need to become successful Met students. During the Gateway program, students will be supported in scheduling interviews for internships, and the goal is for students to be able to transition directly into an internship by the end of the six weeks or shortly thereafter.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Information

Student drop-off and pick-up is allowed in Lot 1 in the pull-out area in front of I-400, near the bottom of the main staircase. You may also use other areas along Mesa College Circle where there are curb cuts to allow cars to pull off the road. Please DO NOT attempt to drive up to the SD Met building for drop-off or pick-up. If you plan to park and visit the Met, you may park in a 1-hour visitor spot (limited) or use pay stations to purchase an hourly parking permit in Lot 1.

Student Parking Permits

For students who drive to campus and wish to have a parking permit for the semester, the application form is available in the front office. Please bring the completed form with the payment of $40 cash (no card payments are accepted at this time) to the Mesa College police office at Q-100 between 8am and 5pm Mon-Thurs (closed Fridays). The Mesa College is no longer issuing a physical parking permit to keep in your vehicle. Instead, your vehicle will be registered virtually in their new online system for the semester.

Mesa College Fall Classes

All students who are enrolled in Mesa College classes for Fall semester should bookmark and regularly check the Met/Mesa Google Classroom for updates, deadlines, and instructions. The first day of college classes is Monday, August 25. If you have any difficulties with your college enrollment, please contact our counselor, Mr. Moravec, at jmoravec@sandi.net.

PowerSchool Parent Portal

The PowerSchool Parent Portal provides you with access to your student’s grades and current progress. If you need support with setting up your PowerSchool Parent Portal access, please contact Mr. Moravec at jmoravec@sandi.net for support.
