NEWS FROM MRS MCCLUE
Dear Families,
As we journey through another busy and rewarding term, I want to take a moment to speak about something at the heart of your child’s growth and success — resilience. In today’s fast-paced world, building resilience is one of the most valuable skills we can foster in our students. Resilience helps children face challenges, bounce back from setbacks, and develop strong social and emotional foundations that will serve them throughout life.
Resilience is not just about “toughing it out” — it’s about learning to navigate difficulty with persistence, confidence, and the right support. As Australian educational speaker Andrew Fuller puts it:
“Resilience is the happy knack of being able to bungy jump through the pitfalls of life — to rise above adversity and to learn from it.”
In the classroom, we see resilience when students keep trying even when the task is difficult. We see it when they ask for help, when they support their peers, and when they reflect on what they could do differently next time. These behaviours don’t come automatically — they are taught, nurtured, and modelled by the adults in a child’s life.
This is where your role as parents is critical. Children learn as much from what we do as from what we say. When we face our own challenges with calm determination, they notice. When we acknowledge our mistakes and work to improve, they learn that failure is not the end — it’s part of growth.
One key area where modelling is especially important is in following rules and expectations — especially those set by the school. At times, we’ve noticed some parents disregarding school rules, such as parking signage, drop-off and pick-up procedures, or respectful communication guidelines. While these actions may seem small or justified in the moment, they send a powerful message to your child: that rules are flexible, optional, or only for others to follow.
Respected Australian education expert Dr. Judith Locke reminds us:
“Children who see their parents disregard rules are more likely to struggle with authority and expectations themselves. They learn what they live.”
When children see their parents upholding school expectations — even when inconvenient — they learn that respect, responsibility, and fairness matter. They internalise the idea that community works best when we all contribute, cooperate, and follow agreed boundaries.
Let’s work together to build students who are not only capable and curious learners but who are also respectful, emotionally intelligent, and resilient young people. By modelling perseverance and integrity at home, you are laying the groundwork for your child’s success both in school and in life.

NEWS FROM MRS BARFOOT
CELEBRATING THE ASCENSION AND THE VISITATION
Next week, we joyfully celebrate two significant feasts in our Church calendar.
On Thursday, 29 May, we mark the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. This holy day commemorates Jesus’ return to the Father in heaven, forty days after His resurrection. It is a powerful reminder of Christ’s divine glory and the promise that we, too, are called to share in eternal life with Him. Traditionally, the location of the Ascension is believed to be less than a mile east of the Old City of Jerusalem. The position is marked by the Chapel of the Ascension, which is said to contain a miraculous imprint of the footprints of Christ before He ascended. The event of the Ascension is found in the Gospels and Acts (Mark 16:19–20; Luke 24:50–53; Acts 1:6–12) and marks the completion of Jesus’ earthly mission.
Then, on Saturday, 31 May, we celebrate the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This special day recalls Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth, a beautiful moment of joy, humility, and faith. It reminds us of Mary’s selfless love and her role in bringing Jesus into the world. This significant event is found in Luke 1:39–56. After the angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will bear the Son of God, Mary travels to the hill country of Judah to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who is also expecting a child. When Mary arrives, the baby in Elizabeth’s womb—who would become John the Baptist—leaps for joy, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, exclaims, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” In response, Mary proclaims the Magnificat, a beautiful hymn of praise glorifying God’s mercy and faithfulness. This moment of joyful encounter between Mary and Elizabeth is the focus of the Feast, reminding us of the importance of faith, humility, and joyful service.
We encourage our community to take time to reflect and pray during these upcoming feasts, as we continue to walk together in faith and hope.

GRANDPARENTS DAY
MOTHER'S DAY MORNING AT OLGC
On Monday, the 12 May our beautiful OLGC mums were warmly welcomed to school and treated to a special morning of love and appreciation. They were spoilt with delicious pancakes topped with their favourites and hot drinks made fresh by the coffee van.
Our whole school then gathered for a heartfelt prayer assembly, honouring the wonderful women in our lives and Mary, the ultimate mother and role model. As our school is named after Our Lady of Good Counsel, we are reminded of Mary's wisdom, strength, and love. These are qualities we see in the incredible mums within our school community.
In Kindy and Pre-Primary, the celebrations continued as we pampered our mums with massages, created sparkling crowns just for them, decorated sweet biscuits, shared drawing time, and even enjoyed a special photo shoot together!
We finished our morning with a song and a special prayer.
To all our amazing OLGC mums.... We are so grateful for you!
