As we head into the new 2025 year, we want to thank you for all you've done to support our students, families and community this past year. We are so grateful for each of you and hope that 2025 brings you all that you're hoping for!

January's Staff, Student & Family Morale Booster: Focus on Ways to Keep Your Cup Full!
Happy 2025! The past few years have been some of the most challenging ones that any of us have experienced, especially in education. A new year is now upon us, and what better way to enter into it than by continuing some of the nourishing habits of rest, relaxation, recharge, and self-care that the winter break hopefully brought to you!
Though there are still challenges surrounding us as we enter 2025, we can handle them better together when we've got the mental and physical tools to help each of us. Those tools come from nourishing our minds, bodies and souls with small acts of self-care. You've likely heard the ‘fill your cup’ analogy. In order to help others, we first need to fill our own cup. We need to be well ourselves in order to also have the strength and energy to pour into those around us.
For January's Site Morale Booster, we're sending each school some items to help keep your cup full during this month! Hot Chocolate, Tea and Cider are all ways to keep your cup physically full (and help curb the outdoor chill of January!) but you'll also be receiving a Self-Care BINGO/challenge board as a booster idea! Consider doing a self-care challenge with your staff, either using the BINGO board or having them send you a selfie of them practicing their own Self-Care! For every person that completes the self-care challenge, provide them a hot cocoa/tea/cider packet as a warm way to acknowledge their important effort of self-care. Similar Self-Care Challenges can even be done with your students and families as a way to engage your school community and promote important healthy habits together!
You can find more ways to keep your cup full in the link below, as well as the additional resources included in this packet: https://www.hingehealth.com/resources/articles/filling-your-cup-the-importance-of-self-care/
Cheers to a Full Cup in 2025!
Self-Care and Mindfulness Resources
With so much to do—students to teach, parents to inform, standards to meet—making time to look after yourself is often the first thing to go and the last thing on your to-do list. Yet, taking care of yourself is critical to being able to address the needs of others, whether that’s students, parents, or colleagues. In an effort to help keep your cup full, our team has compiled a list of self-care & mindfulness resources for you, as well as your students and families! Check them out below!
The apps from Stop, Breathe & Think (iOS & Android) and SB&T Kids, are designed with the idea of peace over perfection. They're here to help kids, teens, and adults develop the emotional strength and confidence to handle whatever comes their way.
The Action for Happiness app is like having a little personal action coach in your pocket who gives you friendly 'nudges' with an action idea each day; sends you inspiring messages to give you a boost, and helps you connect & share ideas with like-minded people! Check out their app (and more awesome resources) at https://www.actionforhappiness.org/app

Volunteer Updates
To better align our process with the information available in background checks, we are revising the current volunteer statuses to reflect three selections versus the existing six selections.
The new volunteer clearance levels are as follows:
Can volunteer
Can volunteer under permanent employee supervision
Cannot volunteer
This mainly affects driving abilities. Those who are classified as “can volunteer” are eligible to drive/chaperone other students on field trips as long as they complete the driving forms and provide a copy of their valid driver's license to the secretary at their school site.
Those classified as “can volunteer under permanent supervision” and “cannot volunteer” are not eligible to drive other students on field trips.
This table outlines the activities allowed for volunteers under each of the new clearance levels.

Dealing with frustrated and high-conflict individuals requires a strategic approach to the situation. This approach should demonstrate patience and empathy and is likely also going to test your patience. When in these situations, remember to acknowledge the parent/guardian’s emotions while staying calm and composed. If they are being unreasonable or acting inappropriate, remain aware that this may not be the best time to rationalize things. A productive conversation would require them to be in a much calmer state. Be mindful of your tone and avoid matching the individual's intensity level. This is much easier said than done but is most effective at de-escalating the individual. When possible, attempt to rephrase what they are saying to be more solution based. It may also be necessary to pause the conversation and revisit later through an email or phone call.
Revised CA Teaching Standards Emphasize Family Engagement
California's newly revised teaching standards now place a greater emphasis on family engagement and social-emotional learning
These standards guide teachers in building stronger connections with families and communities while fostering inclusive, culturally responsive classrooms. Check out Standard 1C, which focuses on teachers using their knowledge of each student to create a learning approach that strengthens participation, engagement, and a sense of belonging. Learn more about the revised standards and their impact on education.
Family Engagement Resource of the Month: Cultivating a Supportive School Climate
School climate refers to a school’s overall atmosphere, which affects everyone’s experiences in the community. A positive school climate supports healthy youth development, improves mental health, and boosts student motivation and academic success. It can also reduce absenteeism, suspension rates, and behavioral issues, while helping improve family and community engagement.
This step-by-step guide from West Ed and the National Center for School Safety is designed to support educators and administrators in creating a positive and supportive school climate, including conducting a needs assessment, selecting strategies, initiative implementation, and sustaining improvement efforts.
