Our Objective

The PAW PRINT was created to showcase the things KO students are doing in core and Encore classes as well as all around our campus. In each issue we will publish student writing and art in addition to articles, interviews and entertainment.

Your new school Ezine!

Welcome to The Paw Print, KO's very own E-magazine! Our Ezine is just like a school newspaper, but we will be fully digital. The Paw Print is a place where all KO students can submit their amazing work. We know we have lots of writers and artists on campus who may not ordinarily have their creations showcased, so we are here to give them a space to do that! Do you write poetry? Stories? Songs? Do you doodle amazing things? Do you create video content? We want to highlight what you are doing!

If you would like to have your work published, please fill out the google form! It must, of course, be school appropriate. Depending on your preference and comfort level, we can post with your name in the credits or we can post anonymously.

Each issue will contain student work, along with book and movie reviews, interviews, polls and information about the amazing things students are doing on campus. The Paw Print is about YOU, so please share your amazing creations with us so that we can share them school wide! Our goal is to publish monthly, but we cannot do that without your submissions.

Please follow us on Instagram @thepawprintezine to know when the latest issue will drop! You can access our website from the KO website homepage under the Students tab or click here: https://sites.google.com/nv.ccsd.net/ezine/home

Thank you! We look forward to showing off your amazing talent!

Center Stage: An interview with Mr. Barnes, conducted by Vanessa Center Stage: An interview with Mr. Barnes, conducted by Vanessa

What did you like the most about math when you were a student?

It came very easy to me and math and music apply better so that way it’s easier to learn.

What do you think is the most important and useful part of learning math in a daily life?

Life is full of challenges and problems and sometimes you need to do math to solve those problems in life.

Why did you decide to be a math teacher?

I wanted to help kids to understand math and I think I do a great job in helping kids understand math.

What advice would you give to a student who thinks math is difficult?

“Just follow the rules and the system and that way it will be easier and you will notice that math will do itself.”

What is your favorite math topic or concept and why?
I love statistics and how likely something is to happen.

Truths and Lies Right and Wrong

I will see you soon from now.

You might have drowned in the water, but mostly in your lies.

It's too late to see and recognize what you did wrong.

So as the last message to you before I too, I'm in the deep end of the water, is that they're here waiting for you to come back because they know.

They know about everything.

Synopsis of "Zoology"

The world is in shambles. Flesh, blood, and agonized groans and wails echoing around every bend and crack in the cement of cities, lost by time, taken by nature. Four teens walk these ruins of the past, surviving with what they can find, while settlements reign supreme in this apocalyptic waste of a jungle.

When the water ripples, screams ring out. When twigs snap, so do the bones of the one who made them. When the birds disperse, the corpse of the disperser lies on the forest ground. Infected roam free. In pain, in suffering, in the shadow of their hubris. The true icarus, who flew too close to the sun, only.. Instead of the sun, there was a mind bending plague in its place.

The world is dead and wild, with monsters of the past roaming every abandoned corner. Will these teens survive, or will the parasites claim what has always been theirs?

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling, reviewed by Josh Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling, reviewed by Josh

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is part of the Harry Potter book series by J.K Rowling and it reaches more into Harry's back story and the loss of his parents.

The story begins in the dining hall, and Dumbledore introduces Hagrid as the new Care of Magical Creatures teacher. Harry and the other students go to Hagrid's class and are introduced to Buckbeak, a hippogriff. There is an incident with Buckbeak and another student which leads to the Hippogriff being sentenced to execution. Later, news gets out that Sirius Black, a renowned criminal and Harry's godfather, has escaped Azkaban Prison. The school has been surrounded by dementors to protect the building and its inhabitants. Harry and his friends create a plan to save BuckBeak and Sirius Black using a time turner that belongs to Hermione.

I believe that the scene in the Shrieking Shack was the best because it went deep into Harry's back story and had almost cleared Sirius's name. We begin to understand Sirius and that he wanted to protect Harry. I think the best character in the story was Professor Lupin because of the plot twist and his connection to Sirius back when they went to Hogwarts as students. I think you should read this novel if you enjoy fantasy or magic.

Twilight

By: Stephenie Meyer

Book Published: September, 2005

Review By: Kennedy and Melissa

Edited By: Melanie

Twilight is a must read, young adult fantasy novel. It takes place in a small town named Forks. The main character Bella Swan, must leave her home due to her mother going on tour with her new boyfriend. She struggles to fit in at her new school. But, she notices an uncanny boy, Edward Cullen. Soon they become close friends. One day Bella meets her fathers friend's son, Jacob Black. The debate between Jacob and Edward is a big conflict in the story. Even with fans. Stephenie Meyer uses her talent of storytelling to tell a story of a vampire and a teenage girl. We would definitely recommend this book to everyone.

Twilight has great storytelling and realistic emotions. Making you feel empathy or hatred towards a character. Stephanie Meyer makes both of the love interests very well, interesting! The book was published in 2005, but it still has the same charm. While some parts are controversial (especially in the sequels) the books are still overall an amazing read! This book is a massive success. We would recommend it for an audience of 12-13+. Although, we would not recommend the movie. Go read the book, now!

Art students in the spotlight! Art students in the spotlight!

Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to shine, whether they are performing on stage, representing our school, or being showcased on “In the Know.” We may have a full palette of colors, but only a few of those colors are being highlighted.

Many of our art student's work typically goes unnoticed and unshowcased, unless there is an art show. This feature section, written and put together by Molly, will shine a spotlight specifically on our art students. It will focus not only on the artist as a creator, but as a storyteller with their own unique voice. By featuring them, we can discover the reasons and feelings behind the art that's displayed in our hallways.

This month's featured artist is Sophia C.

Sophia C. was interviewed by Molly J. about her art. Here is what she had to say!

  1. INSPIRATION: Sophia's inspiration for her art was the beauty of flowers. She decided to use flowers, and she added bees, which gave her the idea for which shapes to use- a sphere for the middle of the flower. Then she used a cylinder for the bees' shape.

  2. FAVORITE FORM OF ART: Sketching is Sophia's favorite form of art. She likes the use of pencils because you can fix mistakes. The pencil is also a great and easier way to shade and blend. She likes using the pencil because it's simple and she doesn't have to color the sketch.

  3. WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of her creation was getting the colors right. She used two colors, orange and blue. She didn’t want the blue of the flower to blend in with the color of the sky. She decided to make the color of the sky orange to fix this problem.

  4. WOULD YOU CHANGE OR DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT: She would change the color of the bee, the way the body was colored, and would make the body tinier.

  5. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN ARTIST: You have to be really creative, you have to know what you’re doing when making the artwork. Be imaginative, especially when in art class. In this class, you have to come up with your own ideas and be original. Still using the materials and steps that the art teacher directs.

This art piece had to be created with only two colors and included a variety of shapes. For her shapes, she chose a cylinder and a sphere.
