5th Grade News

Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed a well-deserved, restful break, full of friends, family, love, and good cheer! I'm super happy to be back with the class, and we dove straight in without missing a beat!
We continue to make progress with our State Report, finishing up "Things to See and Do" this week. These are coming along so nicely, and I am really enjoying reading the chapters. In Math, we are finishing up our topic on adding and subtracting fractions. I am so impressed with the way this class is pushing through this really difficult topic! Way to go! We will have our test next week on Wednesday. In Reading this week, we focused on biographies, specifically one from the Civil Rights Movement. This week we read about Frederick Douglass, and next week we will read about Rosa Parks. We focused this week, on recognizing the author's perspective. In Science, we played an activity game, where algae was proving toxic to local lakes. Students had to come up with ways to clear the algae, and save the town. We also started a new SciTrek module. This time, we are answering the class question, "What variables affect smears?" In Social Studies, we studied the French and Indian War, finishing up Chapter 4. We will move on to the American Revolution next, which happens to be this year's Walk Through topic! Our Walk Through takes place on Monday, May 11.
