Message from the Principals Message from the Principals

Hello everyone,

Thank you so much to those of you who attended our Family Engagement Night this past week at Center School. Sam Drazin presented to families on Supporting Social-Emotional Learning at Home: Building Students’ Durable Skills for Lifelong Success. Staff also enjoyed a presentation from Sam this past week, with similar takeaways in addition to learning how to support all learners. Sam also presented on visible and invisible differences, as well as inclusion and empathy, during our Student Grade Level meetings this week, with the theme of supporting all kinds of learners. Thank you to our Student Council members, Max Tavares, Boden Ayers, and Austin Taylor, for helping Sam host our student presentations on Wednesday. Please see below if you are interested in accessing presentation materials.

On Monday, we will be kicking off our mid-year Home/School-Wide Challenge. This year's theme is New Year's Bootcamp. Grade-level teams collaborated to determine an appropriate task for students to focus on related to organization and executive functioning. Kindergarten students families will focus on students being able to successfully put on their coats and zip or button them. Students in grades 1 to 4 will focus on successfully packing their backpack each morning at home. This challenge starts on Tuesday January 20th and will run through January 30th. Please talk to your child and work together to help them become more independent with these tasks. You know your child best, so start slow if that works best for your family. Please see details are below.

Also, please note that Science Fair registration is open. Details are below.

Respectfully,

Terri and Jayson

Weekly Reminders and Updates Weekly Reminders and Updates

New Year's Boot Camp: Starting on January 20th and running through January 30th students will participate in a school wide home/school challenge. Please check backpacks on Friday for either a paper backpack or paper coat which students will use over the next two weeks to keep track of their at home morning successes at either putting on and zipping/buttoning coats (kindergarten) or successfully packing their backpack (grades 1 to 4). For grades 1 to 4 the expectations on what students need to pack may vary slightly. Each colored paper backpack or coat will allow you to understand the expectations and give you a place to keep track of how your student (and you!) are doing each day. Good luck!

Multicultural Festival Planning Meeting: This upcoming Tuesday, January 20th, we will be having a multicultural festival planning meeting at 3:45 pm in the conference room. This planning committee meeting is open to anyone who would like to help plan or be involved in planning this beloved South Row event!

Science Fair: Registration is now open for our annual Science Fair that will be held on February 25th from 6:30 to 8:00. The snow date is February 26th. For more information you can use this link and to register use this link.

Coats!!: Students will be outside for recess most days throughout the winter months. Please make sure to send your child in with a coat as the temperatures are falling rapidly.

Nurses Corner Nurses Corner

Hello South Row families,

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful and healthy winter break. As many of you are aware, influenza is currently widespread across Massachusetts, along with other common seasonal illnesses. While we have had some cases of flu at South Row, there are no concerning patterns or clusters at this time.

As we move through the winter months, I wanted to take a moment to re-share Chelmsford Public Schools’ illness policy as a reminder of when students should remain home due to illness. Please see the illness policy below:

We recommend children do not come to school if they appear to be ill. We advise to keep your child home if he/she has a sore throat, severe cold, rash, fever, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Your child needs to stay home if he/she has any of the following:

  • Strep Throat: If strep throat is suspected and the child either has had a negative throat culture or has been on antibiotics and fever free for a full 24 hours.

  • A fever over 100: May return to school when he/she is fever free for 24 hours without medication (e.g. Tylenol or Advil).

  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea: May return to school 24 hours after his/her last vomiting and/or diarrhea episode.

  • Red or pink itchy eyes with crusty and or green/yellow drainage: May return to school the day after treatment for 24 hours or has no further eye discharge.

  • Head Lice or nits (eggs): The nurse will assess the student for the presence of head lice or nits. If head lice or nits are detected, the nurse will contact the parent/guardian and provide education on lice treatment. Based on the discretion of the school nurse, some situations may warrant a dismissal from school

  • A rash of unknown cause: May require to MD clearance at the discretion of the school nurse.

If a child is too ill to remain in school the nurse will call parent/guardian and/or emergency contact numbers for dismissal. The student should not place the call from a school phone or mobile phone.

Parents/guardians are required to notify the school if your child contracts any contagious diseases (e.g. Chicken Pox, Strep Throat, Whooping Cough, Fifth’s Disease, Conjunctivitis, Scabies, Impetigo, Ringworm or Head Lice, etc.). If a child has been absent due to a communicable disease, a physician’s release may be required before returning to school.

If you have any questions about this policy please do not hesitate to reach out!

Screenings are also still in progress here at South Row. I will be finalizing the rescreenings next week and should be sending follow-up via email if your child did not pass any hearing or vision screenings at school. If you receive a referral email for your child and have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Respectfully,

Nurse Martin

First off, thank you to those who were able to make it out for our Family Engagement Night this week. Sam Drazin from Changing Perspectives presented about ways to help build durable skills for lifelong success in our children. With takeaway activities to build our children's social and interpersonal skills, Sam provided a springboard for parents to bring conversations to the dinner table that will build up our children's sense of self and others.

Students got to meet Sam during Grade Level Meetings and hear about his life and how his challenges have shaped him and allowed him to build up his sense of self while being inclusive to others, no matter their differences.

Thank you to Sam for traveling from CA to share his experience with us all. It was a great reminder that a little bit of kindness goes a long way!
