The Prize is in the Process
Allow for Thinking Time
Do you ever feel like you are rushing from one activity to the next? Our fast paced world can effect our ability to think and transisition and we are grown adults. Imagine how difficult these transistions and on the spot decisions might be for our kids.
Children need time to think! Let's say...
You need your child to make sure the dog has water and food each day. Don't just tell them to do it and move on to the next item on your list. They need time to think. Ask them to think about how they will get this chore done each day. Brainstorm together and have them come up with the plan. Thank them for the process and be ready to offer praise and changes to the plan if needed. Hopefully the plan they develop for watering and feeding the dog each day is successful and Fido is a happy, healthy pup!
I know you might be thinking, why go through all this trouble. Why can't I just tell them what to do? You can, but the process of making a plan is an important skill they need. I'm not saying give them a trophy each day for feeding the dog, but pick a goal, maybe at the end of the month, and celebrate if they carried out the plan with 90% or higher accuracy.
Giving Kids Time to Think & Understanding the Importance of the Process Will Help Them and You!
