Gov. Whitmer Announces Winner of 2022 State of the State Art Contest

Governor Gretchen Whitmer today announced the winner of the 2022 State of the State art contest is Grace Murtha of Hemlock Middle School. The governor selected the winner from five student finalists out of nearly 800 students who submitted their artwork from around the state. The winning art piece will be featured on the 2022 State of the State program cover.

"Michigan is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes on earth, but it's also home to some incredibly talented students who turned those backdrops into amazing works of art," said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. "I want to thank every student who took the time to create these masterpieces and submit their interpretation of why they believe in Michigan. It's inspiring to see the passion and potential in all of the gifted and creative students in this state."

The art contest challenged K-12 students across Michigan to come up with a creative design for the 2022 State of the State program cover following the theme "Why do you believe in Michigan?" Students were encouraged to be as creative as possible and were welcome to use crayon, marker, paint, or any other material.

7th & 8th Grade Boys Basketball Results

Tuesday, 1/18 - Frankenmuth

7th grade B Team: Won: 36-23

Top Players:

-Grady Galbraith: 14 pts, 4 rebounds

-Noah VanHaistma: 12 pts, 4 rebounds

-Caiden Miller: 6 pts, 4 rebounds

7th grade A Team: Lost: 40-25

Top Players:

-Wyatt Launstein: 8 pts

-Mason Lavigne: 5 pts

-Gavin Schmidt: 4 pts, 8 rebounds

-Drew Genow: 4 pts

The 8th Grade Huskies fell to the Frankenmuth Eagles by a final score of 44-14. The Huskies struggled to possess the ball for great amounts of time, and our lack of playing experience showed. However, there were many great takeaways from individual players and our team never gave up! Steven Katzenberger and Jack Ray each chipped in 4 points a piece and showed strong leadership on the court. Everyone played extremely hard the entire game, and we have an exciting future ahead of us!

Tuesday, 1/19 - Bullock Creek

7th grade B Team: Won: 22-19

Top Players:

-Jordyn Smith: 7 pts, 8 rebounds

-Grady Galbraith: 6 pts, 5 rebounds

-Noah VanHaistma: 5 pts, 8 rebounds

7th grade A Team: Won: 46-26

Top Players:

-Gavin Schmidt: 18 pts, 8 rebounds

-Wyatt Launstein: 11 pts, 11 rebounds

-Mason Lavigne: 8 pts

The 8th grade Huskies suffered 2 defeats to the Bullock Creek Lancers. It was a tough night for the boys who had to play both A&B team games with only ten players. After an injury in the first game that number was cut to nine players. While losing games is a difficult thing, Coach Siler could not be more proud of his players in their ability to keep going. Basketball is an easy thing to coach, but heart and determination are not. Wins are coming for the 8th grade boys. Go Huskies.

The library is celebrating its 80th year! We will be sharing 'Monday Memories' each week to remember our past, celebrate the present, and share happenings for the future. Special events at the library are being planned too. The library actually began in 1895 as residents took turns housing the collection in their homes for everyone to use. Over the years families moved making the mobile library difficult to maintain and the decision was made to donate the books to the public school system. Through the work of Loleta Fyan, the first state librarian of Michigan who pushed for more libraries to be opened and the residents of Richland Township, your library was formally established in 1942.
