Macbeth Monologues

For their final presentation last week, juniors in Ms. Marier's Honors British Literature class memorized and performed monologues from Shakespeare's Macbeth. Before giving their performance, students gave presentations on their monologues, close reading their passage to wring out every droplet of meaning from the original Shakespeare. Some students dressed up as their character (Lady Macbeth, Macbeth, one of the Weird Sisters, etc.) Overall, a great time!

Following the Trail

Students in AP English Literature worked through a question trail to practice critical thinking and analyzing poetry. In teams, they collaborated through their interpretations of a poetry AP practice test. Using both critical thinking and literary analysis, students had to stay on the trail to complete the test. Mistakes and misreading led them down the wrong path forcing them to backtrack their way to a strong and appropriate interpretation. Moving around the room as they debated the meanings of words and their understanding of the reading allowed students to physically follow a line of reasoning as they worked their way through the AP practice test.

Time Travel

At Eclipso in Atlanta, sixth grade students embarked on an immersive VR journey through space and time to explore Egypt’s Giza Pyramid, the resting place of Pharaoh Khufu, constructed over 4,500 years ago in the 4th dynasty. The experience allows the students to physically move and interact in a virtual reality providing an emotional and engaging dive into the reality of ancient Egyptian culture.

All About Hanukkah

Students in Mrs. Noll’s middle school Bible class enjoyed a special presentation by Mrs. Barbara Yarbrough. Mrs. Yarbrough shared about the celebration of Hanukkah in the Jewish faith. She brought in a variety of menorahs to share (including one that was a dog), shared her family’s favorite traditions, and explained the meaning of the celebration in Jewish households. We are grateful for Mrs. Yarbrough’s willingness to come speak to our students and share a new perspective with them!

Sharing Joy

On Wednesday, our Junior Beta Club members visited the residents at Great Oaks Senior Living. They sang carols, played piano, and passed out gifts and handmade cards. Our middle schoolers always have fun visiting the residents, especially at Christmastime!

Merry and Bright!

Our lower school dancers gave outstanding performances in their holiday dance showcase - The Nightmare Before Christmas. The show featured jazz, hip hop and musical theatre dances to a mix of classic and modern Christmas tunes! Congratulations to dance teacher Genie Wiggins and her cast of dancers!

Band Students Attend UGA MidFest

In November, nine outstanding GWA middle school students were nominated and selected to attend the 34th Annual University of Georgia Middle School Band Festival that took place December 13 - 14. In just eight hours of rehearsal split over three blocks, students from across the state of Georgia came together to form eight separate bands that performed concerts in the renowned Hodgson Hall at the University of Georgia's Performing Arts Center. These students rehearsed under some of the best conductors in the country and learned valuable skills to bring back to GWA. Congratulations to the following students:

Dylan Carter – Trumpet

Carter Delp - Clarinet

Charlotte Gray - Trombone

Roen Jimenez - Trombone

Aleah Kumar - Flute

Jack O’Shanic - Percussion

Braxton Perkins - Tuba

Nate Simon - Trumpet

Addie Trinh - Flute

Upcycled Art

Artists in fourth grade are using plaster gauze and recycled materials to create 3D fish sculptures! They collected water bottles from the cafeteria to recycle into amazing artworks. The bottles along with cardboard scraps and plaster gauze were used to construct the form of the fish, and then artists added color using various paints. The final step is to use puffy paint to add details that will give even more dimension to these ambitious fish! Find these and many more stunning works of student art on display at the Lower School Art Show on March 14!

Best Wishes, Tina!

Tina Jordan's adventures at GWA began when she started as a volunteer when her children were enrolled in lower school. As usually happens when volunteers do too good of a job, Tina was officially hired as a GWA employee working with the students as a para-pro on the Hill around 2000, where her love for the students of GWA became very apparent. Later she left the classroom and moved into the enrollment and admissions office for several years continuing to serve GWA students and families. From there, Tina moved into the front office reception position working even more closely with students and families, as well as helping with administration and faculty and staff. This may or may not have been the era when Tina became lovingly referred to as “Tina Mama” by all who knew her best. Tina came to work in the business office in 2017 where she has continued to serve all areas of the school – students, families, faculty/staff, coaches, administrators and even vendors.

Her daughter, Jessie (Jordan) Fincher attended GWA from first grade through graduation in 2004 and her son James “Bubba” Jordan attended from kindergarten through graduation in 2006.

Tina has always been one of GWA’s greatest cheerleaders, supporting not only her children in their athletic endeavors, but all teams through the years. Even after her children graduated, Tina has continued to support the teams and coaches – helping by making sure gate bags and concession boxes are prepared for every event.

Through all of these years, Tina's love for GWA is unwavering. She has been a ray of sunshine and faithful servant for GWA for nearly 30 years, always offering a smile and a helping hand whenever needed. The cheer she brings to the business office and shares with our George Walton family will definitely be missed. We wish “Tina Mama” the best in her next chapter and her well-deserved retirement.
