8th Grade Registers at SWHS for 9th Grade
8th Grade Community Service Project
The IB Community Project is now underway and our 8th graders have been working hard on researching and developing their project proposals! The Community Project will wrap up in each 8th grade advisory around the last week of Quarter 3 or the first week of so of Quarter 4.
Here are the details about what the project entails and how it works!
The Community Project is a student driven service action project that encourages students to use the design process to create a plan and take action on a topic/problem in order to help their community. It is an opportunity for students to gain firsthand experience with service learning, as well as develop their critical, creative, and conceptual thinking skills, organizational skills, communication and collaboration skills, and more. The project occurs in four different phases and student projects are assessed using the IB MYP Community Project criteria that match each phase. The project ends in a culminating presentation of their project process and outcomes.
Students can tackle issues that impact school, neighborhood, city, state, or global communities for their project! Students are encouraged to create a project around a topic that they are passionate about.
Previous student projects have included creating websites or school/neighborhood advertisements to raise awareness of environmental and systemic issues, raising money/gathering donations for specific local organizations, cleaning up local parks and neighborhoods, fixing up the Anthony Pizza Garden, volunteering at local food shelves, animal humane societies, and Feed My Starving Children, reading to or tutoring younger students at elementary schools, and more!
The four phases and criteria of the project are:
- Investigating
- Planning
- Taking Action
- Reflecting
To create their projects, the 8th graders are following a Process Journal designed to guide them through each phase of the project.
Please know, that in Phase 3 of the project, Taking Action, students actually go out into their communities to enact the project they have developed and must follow specific guidelines for doing so. Here are the specific guidelines for the Taking Action phase:
Students cannot fundraise/request donations at school.
Students cannot leave school campus during the school day to work on their project/volunteer etc. unless their parent/guardian retrieves them from school and is with them while they volunteer.
Students are members of our Anthony school community and their surrounding/neighborhood communities. They must be mindful of how they act and how their actions will represent their communities.
Students should take pictures of their group taking action on their project as they need pictures for their final presentations.
If you have any questions regarding the Community Project, feel free to reach out!

Attendance News
π© Let's help each other out!
If you need to pick up your student during the school day, we ask that you PLEASE COMPLETE THE ATTENDANCE FORM or have your student BRING IN A WRITTEN NOTE so they can get a leave early "green" pass to come down to the office. This would really help us not disrupt class and ensure your student is ready for pick up in a timely manner.

Anthony Pie Day 3-14
Hello Anthony Families!
We are excited to announce our annual Pi-Bee will return on March 14th, 2025. Each math class will go to the auditorium on this day and every student will have an opportunity to recite as many digits of pi as they have memorized. The reward for taking the risk?! Pie! If a student is unable to eat pie during the day in observance of Ramadan, we will have take home treats available for you so that they donβt miss out on the action!
Parents: As always, we need your help in securing sooooo many treats! If youβd like to sign up to volunteer or to bring in pies, please go to our sign-up genius website. http://tinyurl.com/AnthonyPiDay25
Weβre so excited for 3/14!

8th Grade Model UN
Anthony 8th graders will soon be participating in a Model United Nations simulation in their World Studies class. The unit will begin April 7th with an exploration of the history, function, and structure of the United Nations. This will be followed by research about the global issue of refugees from the perspectives of the countries students will be representing at the school conference. Students will collaborate, negotiate, and create peaceful resolutions at the Conference on Friday April 25th.
There are two things that families can do to support the success of Model UN at Anthony. First, please sign up to be a volunteer at the conference; pencil April 25th on your calendar. There will be a volunteer sign-up with additional details shared in the future. Second, please assist students in meeting the Model UN dress code. Students should aim for business or business casual attire. For example, dress pants/business top/tie, skirt/business top, or dress. Model UN is a role play, and like any other play there is a costume!
We are excited to see what this year's 8th graders can do with their research and diplomatic skills. Any questions or concerns please contact Annie Ellingham or Toby Aickin.
