LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

During this challenging time of increased food insecurity and for members of our community who rely on SNAP food benefits to feed your families, please scroll down for resources including a list of 24 restaurants giving out free food this month.

With appreciation to our Arleta Community for compiling those resources and for being amazing on so many other levels too…

We’re excited to share your children’s learning outcomes and next steps with you.

  • On Friday, teachers will share Quarter 1 report cards via Parent Vue. You’ll hear their learning gains so far this year and related goals and next steps.

  • Sign ups for parent-student-teacher conferences are in process: please sign up and make your child’s teacher smile! Our goal is that all families attend fall conferences.

Our Arleta Community Anxious Generation book club is launching! What an important time to come together, talk to each other, keep things positive and connect around the culture our kids will experience throughout their school lives and managing technology’s impact . Every family that participates will receive a free copy of the book. There are two ways to share your interest- 1. by filling out this Google Form or 2. by completing the hardcopy slip that will come home in Friday Folders this week, and sending it back to the office by Monday Nov. 17. (Our apologies if you tried to submit the form already: a tech glitch was preventing it from accepting entries. It works now!).

It’s National School Psychologist’s Week, and we are so fortunate at Arleta to have four incredible School Psychologist-minded experts on our team. Melissa Lattig, our talented, caring, efficient and very skilled Arleta School Psychologist, Rachel Ray, our current Qualified Mental Health Practitioner and former School Psychologist for 20 years who brings us so much wisdom and commitment, Justin Rubalcava, one of our wonderful SES Program paraeducators who brings so much expertise to our SES Team and our school, and is currently applying to graduate school programs to become a school psychologist, and Moira Tofanelli-Dougherty, Assistant Director of Special Education whose knowledge, responsiveness and insight is an amazing support to Arleta and she’s a wonderful Arleta Community member (she lives in our neighborhood). Thank you each and all for your expertise in supporting the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of our students, your collaboration with teachers and staff to implement effective strategies, and for helping every child thrive by identifying and addressing diverse learning needs. You make such a difference in the lives of our students every day!

Arleta Families! Thank you so much for your donations to the Dolphin Dash. We’re so close to meeting our goal of $8000. Your support is so appreciated.

It’s Arleta Family Movie Night Friday night! Monsters Inc. begins at 6:00 doors open at 5:30. Hope you’ll come together for fun with your family and others in our community.

Warmly,

Lisa

HONORING NATIVE PEOPLES MURAL CELEBRATION - NOV 21

Please also mark your calendars to join us for our Honoring Native Peoples Mural Celebration the Friday before conferences begin, Nov. 21st at 5 p.m.

Each child in our school will have their radial basket weaving on display, forming the border for our mural. Malcolm Pascua-O’Neill, our Plains Tribe Indigenous Artist, will be present, as will Lisa Jackson, Spotted Elk Oceti Ŝakowiŋ and Sheryl Moren, both former Arleta parents whose visions and efforts over the past four years created the possibility for the prominent indigenous art installation now hanging in our main hallway.

There will be drumming on the stage, and a casual Community Connect in the hallway to view and appreciate the mural. Malcolm will give a short overview of his process and the mural’s meaning. Our mural was also made possible through the contributions by Arleta Families to our Dolphin Dash which takes place each spring. Thank you Arleta Families and Caregivers.

    PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES NOV 24-25

Fall conferences are individual meetings between you and your child's (or children's) teacher(s). Conferences are an excellent time to learn how your child is settling into the school year, what they are finding success with and what they might be struggling with. It's an invaluable opportunity to discuss your child's needs with their teacher. This year, conferences are being held on November 24-25.

Each conference is 25 minutes long, and conferences start at 8am and end at 7:55 pm. Our staff will be at Arleta, but we can provide a virtual link if that’s better for your family. For families with more than one household, we ask you to schedule one conference per child. Students are welcome to join the meeting and individual teachers will share their conference structure through their classroom newsletter.

THE FEDERAL SHUTDOWN - WHAT IT MEANS FOR SCHOOLS AND HOW TO HELP

The National PTA has put together an action center on their website with steps that you can take to help ensure functioning schools during this time. Click here to go to the National PTA Action Center. Lawmakers have been unable to reach an agreement to fund government programs and operations for the next fiscal year, which led to a shutdown of the federal government that is already beginning to impact school operations and programs serving children across the country. At a time when our education system and families are strained, it is the time to increase, not decrease federal investments in programs like IDEA and Title I that uplift our nation’s families and schools. Take action today and urge Congress to end the government shutdown and reach an agreement that prioritizes our nation's children, families and schools!

THE LAST MAPMAKER, BY CHRISTINA SOONTORNVAT - 2023 NEWBERY HONOR

In a fantasy adventure every bit as compelling and confident in its world building as her Newbery Honor Book A Wish in the Dark, Christina Soontornvat explores a young woman’s struggle to unburden herself of the past and chart her own destiny in a world of secrets.

As assistant to Mangkon’s most celebrated mapmaker, twelve-year-old Sai plays the part of a well-bred young lady with a glittering future. In reality, her father is a conman—and in a kingdom where the status of one’s ancestors dictates their social position, the truth could ruin her. Sai seizes the chance to join an expedition to chart the southern seas, but she isn’t the only one aboard with secrets. When Sai learns that the ship might be heading for the fabled Sunderlands—a land of dragons, dangers, and riches beyond imagining—she must weigh the cost of her dreams.

Vivid, suspenseful, and thought-provoking, this tale of identity and integrity is as beautiful and intricate as the maps of old.

    Poetry Corner Poetry Corner

Each week we feature a poem from literature that you can share with your kids. Poems are quick ways to practice literacy and work like little packages of thoughts and feelings that explore the world in new ways. This one is good as the nights get longer.

    Autumn

The morns are meeker than they were

    The nuts are getting brown;

    The berry's cheek is plumper,

The rose is out of town.

The maple wears a gayer scarf,

    The field a scarlet gown.

    Lest I should be old-fashioned

    I'll put a trinket on.

PBOT SE 60TH GREENWAY SURVEY - CLOSES NOV 14

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is considering two route options for a new Neighborhood Greenway on 60th or 62nd between SE Mitchell and SE Nehalem streets. This project will also include an improved crossing of Woodstock.

Your voice matters! Please consider completing this quick survey (< 5 mins) to share your feedback with PBOT: SE 60th Greenway Route Options Survey. The survey is open until November 14th.

Additional details: Neighborhood Greenways often include wayfinding signage, speed bumps, and crossing enhancements. The survey is asking if the greenway should remain on SE 60th or be moved to SE 62nd. If the proposed greenway is moved to SE 62nd, the improved crossing at Woodstock Blvd would be at SE 62nd instead of SE 60th. The Lane Middle School PTA supports keeping the Greenway route on SE 60th to improve safety and visibility for students travelling to and from school. For additional information, please reach out to Corrine McQueen at PBOT: corrine.mcqueen@portlandoregon.gov.

PBOT has identified pros and cons for either route. These include:

    SE 60th Avenue:

+ More direct route to school and nearby gardens.

+ Four-way stop already exists with marked crossing at Duke.

    - Much higher volume of vehicles, and traffic congestion during school drop off and pick up.

    - Higher vehicle speeds.

    SE 62nd Avenue :

+ Much lower volume of vehicles using this street.

+ Lower vehicle speeds on this street.

+ Narrower roadway helps slow driving speeds.

    - Less direct route to school and other community destinations.

    - Crossings of Duke Street and Flavel Street are not stop-controlled.
