Welcome to Second Grade
2026-2027
Welcome:
Welcome to Carroll Elementary School and to our second grade class. The following information will hopefully help you in adjusting to your new environment.
School Hours:
The tardy bell rings at 7:40. The classroom is open at 7:30. Please have your child stop in the office for a tardy slip if they arrive after 7:40. If you wish to pick up your child early, you’ll need to go to the office and sign them out. The office will then page the teacher to dismiss your child.
Transportation:
If students arrive before 7:30, they have to go to the cafeteria. If your child goes home a different way than originally stated, you must send a note to the teacher and/or call the office to inform them of the change. Please do not leave a voicemail for your child’s teacher as they may not have an opportunity to access it. Please send an email to your child’s teacher the day before or a handwritten note the day of. The earlier in the day that parents notify the office, the better. If your child rides the bus home with another child you must fill out an alternate transportation form by noon the day of the transportation change. If your child does not usually ride the bus you will have to purchase a bus pass as well as complete an alternate transportation form.
Dismissal:
Bus riders will be dismissed to the back of the building to load buses. Walkers will be released before car riders. Car riders whose last names begin with A-J will be dismissed from the south loop closest to the gym and students whose last names begin with K-Z will be released from the north bus loop closest to the cafeteria. (You will receive an email from your classroom teacher if your child’s location is changed due to balancing the number of students in the gym and cafeteria.)
Lunch:
The children will have a 30 minute lunch period. They may bring their lunch or buy one in the cafeteria. They can pay daily or you can send in a weekly or monthly check. Remember that you can also load money to your child’s account online. Parents are welcome to join their children for lunch. Guest tables are set up in the cafeteria for parents and children. If someone other than yourself is having lunch with your child, please send a note to your child’s teacher or the front office.
LUNCH WILL BE CLOSED TO VISTORS THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF SCHOOL (8/11-8/21).
Snack:
Students are allowed to bring a healthy snack daily. Children may also bring a water bottle to school. It must have a lid that can be pushed closed (e.g.: sport top/flip top). Please no messy snacks that leave fingers dirty, snacks that require a utensil and absolutely no snacks containing peanuts or tree nuts. Suggestions: Graham crackers, goldfish, raisins, grapes, crackers, dried fruit, cereal bar, pretzels, chex mix, sting/cubed cheese. See photos below for snack/water bottle examples.
Encore:
Our children receive Art, PE, Music, Library/Computer and Science Lab. The time and rotation schedule will be sent to you from your teacher.
Newsletters:
Each week Second Grade teachers provide a newsletter through Smore. It will include important information, upcoming dates, curriculum being taught that week, and some important resources for you to help your student become a successful second grader. Teachers will email the link to the newsletter weekly.
Reading:
Your child is encouraged to read for 20 minutes each night. This is a very important part of 2nd grade. Research shows that those individuals who spend time reading each day will make the greatest gains in reading ability. A reading log will be attached in our weekly smore that you can print and fill out. If you need a paper copy sent home, please let your child's teacher know.
If students log at least 850 minutes per nine weeks, they will qualify to be a Dragon Pride Reader and be recognized in our assembly each 9 weeks.
Curriculum Night:
Curriculum Night for second graders will be Tuesday, August 25 at 5:00. Please be on the lookout for specifics from your classroom teacher.
Required Forms (3)
In addition to the three forms below, please fill out the form from PTO for your student's free Dragon Games t-shirt. This will also be worn on our field trips this year.
