Family Update 10/5/26
Week of Oct. 5, 2026 Family Update

Week of Oct. 5, 2026
Dear Skyline Students and Families,
As we head into a busy week at Skyline, there are several important dates and opportunities for students and families to keep on their radar.
Progress report grades will be available in PowerSchool on Monday, October 5. We encourage families to take a few minutes to review grades together with their student. Progress reports are a great opportunity to celebrate the work that is going well and identify where a student may need additional support, encouragement, or a plan for the weeks ahead. We are halfway through trimester 1 already!
Parent-Teacher Conferences are Tuesday evening, October 6, and we look forward to connecting with families. If you have not yet signed up, please make arrangements to meet with your student's teachers at the link further down in the newsletter. These conversations are an important part of the partnership between school and home and can help ensure students have the support they need to be successful.
Before conferences, Washtenaw Community College will host a FAFSA/Financial Aid Information Night at 4:00 p.m. in the Skyline auditorium on Tuesday, October 6. This session will provide valuable information for students and families about completing the FAFSA and understanding financial aid as students begin planning for life after high school. Whether your student is just beginning to explore postsecondary options or already has a plan in mind, we encourage families to take advantage of this opportunity.
Wednesday, October 7 is Count Day. It is especially important that students attend all of their classes throughout the day. Count Day is an important day for schools across Michigan, and every student's attendance matters. Please help us make sure your student is at school and in class on time.
Thursday, October 8 is PSAT/NMSQT testing day for all 11th-grade students. Our juniors should get a good night's sleep, arrive prepared, and do their best.
Students in grades 9, 10, and 12 will begin classes at 12:20 p.m. on Thursday. Buses will run at their regular morning times, and there will be no late bus transportation for the 12:20 p.m. start.
If students in grades 9, 10, or 12 arrive at school at the regular time, they will report to a designated space where they will be supervised by an adult from 8:00 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. They will then transition to their classes beginning at 12:20 p.m.
For our 11th-grade students taking the PSAT/NMSQT, students must remain in their assigned testing space until 12:15 p.m. Students may not be called out of testing or leave early. We will not be able to call into testing spaces to retrieve students, so please plan appointments, transportation, and other commitments accordingly.
Finally, we will head into our early fall break beginning Friday, October 9, with students returning Tuesday, October 13. We hope everyone enjoys the opportunity to rest, recharge, and spend some time with family and friends.
There is a lot happening in just a few days, but each of these moments supports our larger goal of helping every Skyline student stay connected, informed, and on track. Thank you for your partnership and for helping our students make the most of these opportunities.

Sign up for Parent Teacher Conferences, Tues. Oct. 6
All Parent/Teacher Conferences will occur in The Commons here at Skyline High School on Tuesday, October 6th, from 4:00pm until 7:00pm. You must schedule a conference with each teacher you wish to speak with. We utilize the website PTCFast.com to enable parents to sign-up for 5-minute conference slots with their child’s teachers. You will receive an individual email from each teacher you have signed-up to meet with. If you signed-up to meet with 4 teachers, you will receive 4 separate confirmation emails. Please sign up for no more than one time slot with each teacher. Also, please allow at least 5 minutes between each conference; do not sign up for back-to-back conference slots.
If your child is doing well in a particular class, and you have no concerns, you do not need to sign up for a conference with that teacher. We encourage you to sign up for a conference slot with a teacher if your student is struggling and/or you have concerns about the class.
Again, the Parent/Teacher Conferences will be on:
Tuesday, October 6th, 2026 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm

Testing this Thursday, October 8, 2026
Important Date
Thursday, October 8, 2026
PSAT/NMSQT for 11th Grade Students
The PSAT/NMSQT, will be administered at Skyline High School on Thursday, October 8, 2026 for our 11th-grade students at 8:00am. Our 9th, 10th and 12th graders will have a delayed start to the day, arriving @ 12:20pm.
The PSAT/NMSQT is an important opportunity for students to become familiar with the digital SAT experience, practice their test-taking skills, and, for eligible students, compete for recognition through the National Merit Scholarship Program.
How Can Families Help?
A few simple steps can help students feel prepared:
Encourage your student to get a good night's sleep before testing.
Make sure they arrive at school on time and are ready for the testing day.
Encourage students to bring their charged school-issued MacBook as directed by Skyline.
Remind students to listen carefully to testing instructions and take their time.
Remind students to listen, read and get familiar with the information shared in the coming weeks so they're fully prepared
Encourage students to approach the assessment as an opportunity to practice, learn, and demonstrate what they know.
There will be no access to personal electronic devices in the testing room, and students may not access personal electronic devices anywhere in the school during the entire testing window. This includes testing rooms, hallways, restrooms, and other areas of the building.
Accessing a personal electronic device during the testing window may result in serious consequences, including, but not limited to, the student’s test being disqualified and potentially the disqualification of tests for the entire testing room.
Please have this conversation with your student(s) before testing day and emphasize the importance of following this expectation from the time they arrive until the testing window has ended.Thank you for your support in helping us ensure a secure and successful testing environment!
Additional information about the PSAT/NMSQT, including what students can expect on the assessment, is available through College Board's PSAT/NMSQT information.
Thank you for partnering with us as we prepare our students for a successful testing experience!
October 8, 2026 - PSAT/NMSQT Test Day Schedule:
Attendance Calls Beginning on Monday, October 5th
On Monday, October 5th, the District will resume attendance robocalls. If your child has an unverified absence, you will receive a telephone call to this effect at or around 6pm in the evening. The calls will let you know which period your child was absent for. The point of the call is to notify you of attendance activity you may not be aware of. You should check your parent account in PowerSchool for full details. The attendance calls only go out to custodial adults; not to emergency contacts.
Please use this information to monitor your child's attendance in addition to regularly checking PowerSchool for tardies and grades. We are a team and it takes all of us to ensure our students stay on track to graduation.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Most students can complete their section in 12 minutes or less, and they can see their results, including Federal Pell Grant eligibility and their Student Aid Index, immediately after submitting the form.
What is the FAFSA form?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form is the federal application that students and families complete to apply for federal student aid, such as federal grants, work-study funds, and loans. The FAFSA form is also often used to assess eligibility for state and institutional grant and scholarship programs. It gives students access to the largest source of financial aid to help pay for higher education.
Completing and submitting the FAFSA form is free.
When is the deadline to submit the 2027–28 FAFSA form?
The federal deadline to submit the 2027–28 FAFSA form is June 30, 2028. State and college deadlines are often much earlier, in winter/spring 2027. Many state grants and institutional financial aid funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. We strongly encourage students to submit the FAFSA form as early as possible.
Where can school staff find guidance and other materials to support FAFSA completion with their
students?
High school counselors and others can find resources on FSA’s Financial Aid Toolkit website. The site has guidance about completing the FAFSA form and links to many other resources.
Where can students and parents get help if they run into technical issues or need personalized assistance?
Students and families can visit the StudentAid.gov Help Center for live chat support and answers to
common questions.

SAEBRS Screener Nov. 4
Skyline staff care deeply about our students, and we want to check in with all students to assess how they are doing. To assist us in this effort, we administering a behavioral wellness screener to all of our students. The SAEBRS (The Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener) is a brief and research-validated self-rating scale that is completed by students. This information helps us to understand the needs of all our students and to make effective plans at the whole school, class, and individual level.
A member of our screening & support team will follow up with any student whose scores indicate they may need additional support. This school year,Skyline High School will be administering the screener 2 times: in Nov, and March, during Skytime classes. If you would like additional information about this universal assessment and student supports we have at Skyine HIgh School please reach out to your child's counselor.
CONFIDENTIALITY STATEMENT
Results of this screener will only be reviewed by district mental health professionals and shared with appropriate staff and/or parents on a need-to-know basis. The screener is not being used to provide a diagnosis or to treat any mental health conditions, but rather as a guide to determine the current behavioral well-being of our student population.
OPT-OUT
If you have no objection to the screener, no further action is necessary, and your student will participate.
If you would prefer that your student NOT participate in this screening during this school year, please complete this form by October 20. If you have multiple students at Skyline, please complete the survey for each student. You will receive a separate e-mail for each student. If you opted your student out of the survey during a previous school year, you will need to opt them out again for this school year.

Philosophy
The Ann Arbor Board of Education believes that regular and punctual attendance by students results in greater levels of student achievement in a safe, secure, and orderly school, in higher staff and student morale, and in better preparation for post-high school life.
An essential part of all education takes place through social interaction that one cannot learn from studying texts. While independent work and/or research is vital, it is equally important to hear lectures, participate in activities and discussions, be exposed to other peoples’ ideas, and work with non-print materials. For this reason, daily attendance and participating in class is crucial and will impact student performance positively.
Students and their parents/guardians should understand that excessive absences, whether excused or unexcused, might often drastically affect class grades. Successful students are seldom absent.
Extended Absence Form (3 days or more OR 1 or 2 days before/ after a school vacation/break)
Form must be turned in and signed by all teachers and SLC Administrator 5 days prior to the first day missed. Please download the Extended Absence Form by clicking HERE.
Procedures
Students are expected to be in class, punctual, and prepared to participate in the learning process every day. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential if students are to make use of the educational opportunities in high school.
Excused Absences
To excuse an absence a student’s parent/ guardian must notify the school of the student’s absence within 48 hours with an acceptable reason.
Parents/guardians may excuse absences only for the following reasons:
1. Personal illness
2. Illness of an immediate family member
3. Death of a family member or close friend
4. Verified medical or dental appointment
5. Verified legal proceedings
6. Emergency removal for administrative reasons
7. Suspension from school
8. Approved school-sponsored or school-related activity
11. Observance of a religious holiday
Additional Notes
The grade level administrator must pre-approve absences for family travel/college visits to allow for make-up privileges. Families are expected to completely fill out a “Request for Extended Absence” form and turn it in at the SLC level office in advance.
Once an extended absence is approved, the student has the responsibility to make the appropriate arrangements with his/her teachers.
When leaving during your scheduled school hours with permission, the student must check out at the student entrance CA desk.
Students may not be excused from class in order to remain in school to study for a test, go to the media center, complete make-up work, or attend some other in-school activity.
Students who arrive after the beginning of their school day or who return after checking out must arrive at the student entrance and present their school iD for entry.
Excused Absence Procedure
When reporting an absence, please be prepared to leave the following information:
1. Student’s name
2. I.D. Number
3. Grade Level
4. Date(s) and time(s) of absence
5. Reason for absence(s)
6. Your name and relationship to the student
Unexcused Absences
Unexcused absences are those absences where the student fails to attend class and the parent or guardian has not notified the school in accordance with the required attendance procedures.
Make-up Work
Teachers must allow students to make up work due to excused absences. Two days will be granted for the make-up of one day’s excused absence. Students are expected to take the initiative in asking teachers for make-up work.
Tardies (Excused and Unexcused)
Students have a responsibility to arrive on time. An unexcused tardy occurs when a student arrives after the bell rings without an acceptable excuse.
Consequences for unexcused tardiness will be in accordance with the provisions of the AAPS Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook and the Skyline Student and Family Handbook.
Parent Notification
The primary method of notification arrives through a computerized message system to notify families of unexcused absences; parents can monitor through Powerschool for real time attendance. Parents may call the appropriate SLC office for student attendance records if needed. The primary responsibility for maintaining good attendance belongs to students and their families.
Student & Family Handbook
Please Review the Student & Family Handbook
As we begin a new school year, we ask all students and families to take some time to read and review the Skyline High School Student & Family Handbook. The handbook contains important information about school expectations, policies, procedures, student responsibilities, attendance, academic guidelines, safety, and the many resources available to support our students. Taking the time to become familiar with this information will help ensure that everyone understands what is expected and knows where to turn when questions arise. Clear is Kind, and making sure our students and families have a shared understanding of our expectations is an important part of creating a safe, supportive, and successful school community. Please review the handbook together and reach out to us if you have any questions.
Traffic Flow
Please share this info with other family members or friends who may be picking-up or dropping-off students like you: THE SPEED LIMIT WHILE ON CAMPUS IS 10 MPH. Please drive slowly for the safety of all! Students arriving to school should be dropped off at the Student Entrance using the parent drop-off loop ONLY. Students will be required to present their student ID (physical or digital) upon entry to the building. Students who have already been called out and approved for early dismissal should be picked up at the parent pick-up loop at any time during the school day. The only time a student will be picked up at the main office is if a parent/guardian is coming in to pick up a student and this early release has not previously been called into the attendance line or front desk. Morning Arrival/Drop Off: PLEASE PACK YOUR PATIENCE and be kind! If you are turning into the parent drop-off loop, you should be in the left lane along the stadium. You should not be crossing over traffic to turn into the parent drop-off loop. The drop-off loop is ONE LANE ONLY! Students are exiting vehicles and we do not want cars driving past them as they are exiting their vehicles. There are barricades in the inner lane for a reason, please do not ignore them. We are doing our best to move people forward and to keep the line moving as quickly as possible. Please drive around other children how you would want others to drive around your child. The parent drop-off loop is a constantly moving line. We ask that you ALWAYS pull forward in the loop as far as possible and do not stop right in front of the school as this slows down the line and causes unnecessary delays. There is no parking and sitting in the loop. If you need to sit and wait for your child, we ask that you move to a parking spot near the baseball fields or tennis courts to wait for them there, not in the loop. When you arrive in the loop at drop-off in the morning, your child should be prepared to quickly grab their belongings and hop out of the vehicle as soon as you are able to come to a complete stop in the loop. This could occur at any spot in the loop, not only directly in front of the school. The line should constantly be moving forward for a continuous flow through. END OF THE DAY PICK UP: PLEASE PACK YOUR PATIENCE and be kind! If you are turning into the parent pick-up loop, you should be in the left lane along the stadium. You should not be crossing over traffic to turn into the parent pick-up loop. We understand that students come out at somewhat staggered times at dismissal. For this reason, we ask that you communicate with your child about their after-school plan. If they are coming directly out to the car at dismissal, please move forward as far as possible and continue moving forward as traffic moves. If they are not coming out right at the end of the day, please do not pull into the parent pick-up loop until your child is coming out and park in a parking spot near the baseball fields or tennis courts until they are ready to exit the school. So that we can allow those who have already picked up their students to exit, only at the end of the day, we will allow the inner lane after the end curve closest to the school to be used to pass cars that are still waiting on their child. Please drive slowly, use your turn signals, watch for merging traffic, and pay close attention to students as you exit the pick up loop. There will only be one lane of traffic exiting the pick-up loop. When exiting, you should remain in the left lane. For this plan to work safely and efficiently, it's essential that everyone adheres to the designated drop-off areas and traffic flow. Dropping off students in non-designated areas not only disrupts the traffic flow but also creates potential safety hazards for students walking in areas where pedestrian traffic is not expected. Do not drop students off in the student parking lot, this is not a student drop off location and creates dangerous traffic patterns that the space is not intended for. Our students consistently complain about parents dropping off in the student parking lot. Skyline has designed its traffic flow plan to optimize the use and safety of our roadways and parking areas. The road surrounding the stadium, baseball fields, tennis courts, and school will operate as a one-way route. Please refer to the diagram above for detailed traffic directions. Areas marked with blue arrows indicate one-way traffic, while sections with both blue and orange arrows are the only locations on campus where two-way traffic is permitted. The east side drop-off loop will continue to be used exclusively for parent drop-offs, and the west side loop will remain reserved for buses only. Please note that parking is prohibited in both loops at all times. A few years ago Mr. O, Payton, and Valencia made this short video to help you understand the traffic flow on campus. It states "2024 - 2025" at the beginning, but the video remains valid: Video linked here
Please keep in mind, that you are the model for our
future drivers!
