Important District News and Updates

Wednesday, May 21, 2025
Dear Avon Lake City Schools Community,
Students throughout our school district are having fun while showing off their safety and biking skills during Bike-to-School Week. Activities of various types have been planned at our buildings. Students are demonstrating courage and confidence, and making their best efforts to dodge rain drops and bike to school. Thanks to the students and families who are participating in Bike-to-School Week, and special thanks to our parent and community motorists who are keeping an extra-eye on safe vehicle travel this week!
Election Results Certified, Issue 16 Bond Issue to be Recounted on May 28th
At their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 20th, the Lorain County Board of Elections officially certified the results of the election on May 6th. The official vote for Issues 16 and 17 are below:
Issue 16: ALCS Bond Issue
Issue 17: ALCS Operations Levy
Since the difference between votes cast “for” Issue 16 and “against” Issue 16 is approximately .28%, any election outcome which is equal to, or less than one-half of one percent (0.5%) of the total votes cast requires an automatic recount per Ohio Revised Code. This recount will take place on Wednesday, May 28th. District officials will be present for that recount, and we remain confident and optimistic about the final outcome. Thank you for your continued support and patience.
Avon Lake High School Named Best Buckled School
The Lorain County Public Health Department recently named Avon Lake High School as the Best Buckled School as part of their Best Buckled Bowl competition, for having a 97.6% seat belt usage rate. For winning this most prestigious of county safety recognitions, Avon Lake High School will be recognized by the Safe Communities Coalition for their Click-It-or-Ticket National Mobilization Campaign. Great job to our students and families for promoting a safe environment throughout the community and around our school campus. Awesome job to all!
Erieview Community Open House and Guided Walk-Throughs Monday, May 26th
Come out and join us for a Community Open House at Erieview Elementary School on Monday morning of Memorial Day, 9 a.m. – 10 a.m, before the City parade which kicks off at 10 a.m., and then again from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. after the parade. The Open House will feature guided tours led by me, Dr. Lauver, and our SRO Officer, Brian Hurd. Erieview currently has several empty classrooms which will serve as designated areas for people to enter and view. While all other rooms, including the main office, will be locked with no access to visitors during the Open House, common spaces such as the gym, cafeteria, and foyer will be reserved spaces for individuals to snap pictures. The outside of the building will also be a great spot for taking pictures as well. Visitors can join us at Erieview’s main entrance, as all other doors will be locked. The ALCS is hosting this Community Open House as a way to celebrate Erieview as a beloved school building, intending to show an appreciation for the lifelong friends, relationships, and traditions devotedly established by the people and families of our community, with this final opportunity to walk its halls. Hope to see you there!
Erieview Students Now Published Authors!
Fittingly, and to close this week’s message, I encourage you to see the nearby link that shares a glimpse into the class books recently written by our Erieview students, who authored their own narratives about topics such as friendships, their favorite months of the year, and more. This effort was inspired by local author, and past Avon Lake City Schools elementary school teacher, Arline Gray, and her “cute, rambunctious, fuzzy little dog, Momo,” who seeks to further literacy and writing skills among students. Great job to our Erieview students, staff, and families who participated, and thank you to Arline Gray and Momo!
Bike safe! See you Monday at the Erieview Community Open House!
Sincerely,
Joelle M. Magyar
Superintendent of Schools
