Principals' Message
Dear Centennial Families,
Dear Centennial Families,
I know many of you have questions and strong feelings about the district’s recommendation regarding Centennial. I want you to know that I understand how deeply this school means to our students, families, and staff. I also recognize that families may be experiencing this recommendation in very different ways—some with sadness or frustration, some with uncertainty, and others with questions about what comes next.
Please know, your child’s well-being, sense of belonging, and learning will remain at the center of our work throughout this process. Whatever happens, our commitment to caring for and supporting every Centennial student will not change.
I encourage you to ask us questions and share your voice. We will continue to communicate what we know, acknowledge what we do not yet know, and connect you with accurate information as the process moves forward.
Thank you for continuing to be part of the Centennial community. I know this is not an easy process, and I am grateful for the care, questions, and advocacy you continue to bring on behalf of our students.
With gratitude,
Geneanne Payne and Susannah Penney
Vision~Inspiring a community of diverse minds to thrive as independent learners.
Important School Information
Social Emotional Learning
This year, we are excited to expand our Social Emotional Learning curriculum to help us teach respectful and kind behavior at school. As you may already know, we teach social emotional learning lessons throughout the year to help students develop different skills and coping strategies.
This year, we are adding lessons across grades elementary, middle and K-8 schools that focus on respectful communication, understanding the impact of language, and helping students recognize and prevent language that can be hurtful or harmful to others. Specifically, these lessons are designed to help students understand how saying hurtful things based on someone’s race, ethnicity or background are not acceptable in our school community.
Grades K-2
Picture books, including More Than Peach, That’s Not My Name!, and Speak Up. Students learn about belonging, pronunciation of names, kindness, and the importance of using respectful words and actions so everyone can learn. Students practice noticing when someone may feel hurt or left out and learn simple ways to speak up or ask an adult for help.
Grades 3-5
Students learn more about respectful words, fair treatment, and how hurtful language can impact others. Lessons help students recognize that hurtful language such as racial slurs and name-calling can cause harm and should be reported. Students also practice positive ways to respond, support peers, and help create a school community where everyone feels safe to learn.
Grades 6-8
Students continue this learning in developmentally appropriate ways by exploring identity-based bullying, intent and impact, bias, slurs, allyship, and advocacy. Students analyze how harmful language affects emotional well-being and school culture, practice respectful communication, and identify concrete ways to speak up, seek help, and contribute to a more inclusive school environment.
Our goal is to work together with you to create safe environments. One way families can support this learning at home is by reinforcing the three R’s: Recognize, Respond, Report.
Recognize: Work with your student to identify language that may be hurtful or harmful and speak openly about why certain words or actions may be hurtful or harmful to others.
Respond: One simple response students may practice is: “We don’t use that language here.” This gives students a respectful way to speak up when they hear language that could harm others or make the learning environment feel unsafe.
Report: Encourage your student to speak up and get help from a trusted adult when they hear hurtful or harmful language.
If you have questions about the lessons or would like to discuss them further, please feel free to reach out to Geneanne Payne, the principal, at geneanne.m.payne@adams12.org.
Thank you for your support and partnership.
Fall Panorama Student Survey
I am writing to share information with you about Panorama, a voluntary survey that students in grades 3-12 complete once in the fall and once in the spring. This email has specific information about the version of this survey being conducted this spring.
Centennial students will receive the survey one day during the September window of the 8th through the 18th.
What does the survey ask?
This survey asks questions about:
How well students think they are able to persevere through setbacks to achieve their goals
How well students believe they can manage their emotions
How confident students are in their ability to succeed in school
How students feel about their school’s social and learning environment
How valued students feel in their school community
If you want to see the exact questions in the survey, please click the following links:
Questions for grades + School Environment 3-5 (en español + School Environment)
Questions for grades 6-12 + School Environment (en español + School Environment)
Who can see my child’s responses?
A small number of staff members will be able to view students' answers. Over the course of the school year, these staff members may review this information to help them better serve students as they interact with them as part of their normal work (i.e. counselor check-ins with students in ninth grade).
The staff members who will be able to see students’ answers are:
District administrators
School administrators
School counselors
Mental health providers
Social emotional learning specialists
Your child’s teacher(s)
If you want to see your child’s responses on this survey, please contact our school mental health team or school counseling team.
How will you use this information?
We will use responses to this survey to explore trends and patterns across our school that will inform how we approach social and emotional wellbeing for all students.
Specific student answers will help us better serve students as part of our support and check-in processes. For example, all sixth grade students have a check-in with their counselor to help make sure they are transitioning successfully from elementary to middle school. Their counselor might look at this information and use it to guide their conversations.
Opt out information
If you do not want your child to complete this survey, please complete the opt out form attached to this email.
Thank you for your participation in this survey. We are excited to learn more about the social-emotional needs of our students in order to provide them with the best possible educational experience.
Please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Payne with any questions at: 720-972-5283.
Friendly Reminders
🐾 A Friendly Reminder About Pets on Campus
We know dogs and other pets are cute, cuddly, and much-loved members of our families—and we love seeing them too! However, for the safety of all students, families, and staff, pets are not permitted on campus, including during arrival and dismissal. This is a safety concern and is also in accordance with district policy. Thank you for helping us keep our school community safe!
🛴🚲 A Friendly Reminder About Bikes & Scooters
For everyone’s safety, please remember that bikes, scooters, and motorized bikes or scooters must be walked/hand-pushed while on campus. This applies to adults as well as students. Thank you for slowing down, walking your wheels, and helping us keep arrival and dismissal safe for everyone!
