Principal's Message/Mesaje De Director

Queridas familias,

Dear Families,

I hope you all are enjoying this beautiful warm sunny weather this weekend. What a week we had at James John! There were so many highlights. It was great seeing so many of you at our Spring Open House on Thursday. A big shout out goes to our teachers for preparing their classrooms for the event and to our new music teacher Ms. Kayla Longanecker who directed our Kinder Chorus for our first school music performance since before the pandemic. Thank you also to all of our parent and family volunteers who made the event a big success. The next day on Friday, we moved to our Student of the Month Assemblies and our celebration of “El Dia Del Niño” (Childrens’ Day). We were excited to welcome “Blaze” (Portland Trail Blazers’ mascot) again to our campus and he welcomed students to start the day. Later we celebrated our Students of the Month who demonstrated great problem solving skills (our school wide theme for April). We also celebrated all of our Multilingual and Bilingual students as April has been “Bilingual and Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month.” In honor of “El Dia Del Niño” we ended the day with all classes smashing a piñata filled with games and toys. It felt like a great way to end a busy week and honor the warm, sunny weather.

Looking ahead to next week, our students in grades 3-5 will be beginning OSAS state testing in English Language Arts (followed by Math the following week). While there are many ways for students to demonstrate their talents and skills, we have been supporting students to try their best and to “show what they know” on these assessments (and we have confidence in them!) After several years of interrupted learning, this has felt like more of a “normal” year and our students have been showing growth on a variety of measures. We will be completing end of year assessments in Literacy and Math across all grades during this next month and we will be sharing these results with you as our year winds down. For this next month of May, our school theme will be “Courage” and we encourage our students to step up and be courageous this month, just like a lion! Have a great rest of the weekend.

OSAS State Testing - Grades 3-5- Beginning this week /Exámenes Estatales OSAS - Grados 3-5- A partir de esta semana

As mentioned above, students in grades 3-5 will begin OSAS (Oregon State Assessment System) Smarter Balanced Testing in English Language Arts this week (students will test in Math the week of May 8). For more information on these tests, please visit:

https://osasportal.org/ or

https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/assessment/Pages/Statewide-Assessments.aspx

James John has adopted the same achievement goals for our students as the Portland Public Schools School Board which are listed here:

https://www.pps.net/Page/1789

To assist students to perform their best on these assessments, we encourage students to get a good night's rest, eat a healthy breakfast and arrive on time to school. These assessments are rigorous, aligned to the Common Core Standards and we have been practicing to ensure students feel comfortable taking them and can apply what they have been learning. If you have any questions about these assessments, please contact your child's teacher or the school office.

https://osasportal.org/ o

https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/assessment/Pages/Statewide-Assessments.aspx

https://www.pps.net/Page/1789
