Lady Arrows Softball Update Lady Arrows Softball Update

The Sullivan Lady Arrows continue to impress, securing a hard-fought 7-6 victory over Terre Haute South Friday, April 18th, in a thrilling rematch of last year’s close contest. Junior Jaylynn Hobbs led the charge with a 2-run homer and an RBI double to help erase an early 3-0 deficit. Sullivan’s defense came through in the clutch, with Kensley Wiltermood and Addie Fosdick sealing the win with a game-ending double play. Mylee Vandevender pitched a complete game, striking out five and scattering seven hits.

Earlier during the week of April 14th, the Arrows split a pair of conference games—falling just short in an 8-7 battle with Indian Creek, then bouncing back with a 5-3 road win over North Putnam. Vandevender starred in both games, launching a home run in each and striking out a career-high 12 batters in the North Putnam win.

Strong offensive showings came from Wiltermood, Hallie Howard, Rachel Eslinger, and Kate Alsman, showcasing Sullivan’s depth and determination at the plate.

The Sullivan boys’ golf team bounced back from a 10th-place finish at the Northview Invitational with an impressive quad meet victory on their home course Tuesday evening. The Arrows topped the leaderboard with a team score of 177, finishing ahead of Owen Valley (188), North Central (200), and Eastern Greene (226).

Freshman standout Tanner Boyl led the charge, shooting an even-par 35 to earn medalist honors—the first of his high school career. Boyl’s round included four birdies, with an exciting streak of three in a row on holes 7 through 9.

Cash Murdock and Eli Van Ness each turned in solid rounds of 47, while Connor Brundige and Sam Couch both carded 48s. Brady Druy followed closely with a 49, showcasing Sullivan’s depth across the lineup.

The Arrows are building momentum and showing strong promise as the season continues!

The Sullivan girls’ tennis team earned a hard-fought 3-2 road victory over South Vermillion on April 21, improving their season record to 6-1. The Lady Arrows will return to their home court on April 23 to face West Vigo.

Junior Varsity

Sullivan also had a strong showing in junior varsity play, winning 8 of 10 matches. JV singles winners included Lori Alumbaugh, Annabel Grant, and Alexis Smith. Doubles victories came from the teams of Jada Spurlock/Payton Sparks, Addy Hunt/Jurnee Stalcup, Zoey Torrance/Maelee Ayers, Sophie Phegley/Lynnlee Tracy, and Victoria Harvey/Bea Ferrario.

Coach’s Comments:
“This marks our second 3-2 win this season, and in different matchups than our earlier win over Indian Creek—which shows promising depth on our team. Ally McKinney made a gutsy comeback after dropping the first set and trailing in the second. She gave herself a real shot against a tough opponent. Mercedes and Izzie came out strong and dominated their matches, while our #2 doubles team, Cabela and Isabelle, delivered another key win. I wouldn’t mind if that became a habit!

Our JV team had an excellent night as well, with several girls notching their first wins of the season. I told them the reward is a faster ball machine next practice—though I may have heard a few groans from the back of the bus!”

SES Leaders at Title Con SES Leaders at Title Con

Proud to share that Allyson Wegner, Principal of Sullivan Elementary School, and Brandy Gentry, Literacy Coach, are presenting today at Title Con in Plainfield!

Their session, "Closing the Reading Gap with Leveled OG Blocks," offers an in-depth look at how SES has implemented structured literacy interventions grounded in Orton-Gillingham (OG) principles. This innovative approach uses data-driven groupings and phonics-based instruction to meet the diverse needs of K-5 learners, particularly those not responding to traditional Tier 1 strategies.

Through carefully leveled OG Blocks, Allyson and Brandy have worked alongside teachers to integrate intensive phonics routines into small-group instruction, focusing on decoding skills, phonemic awareness, and fluency. The results? Increased phonics proficiency and reading growth among students once at risk of falling behind.

Their work exemplifies the power of intentional instructional design in Title I settings—and the promising outcomes when we invest in evidence-based strategies to boost student achievement.

Congratulations to Allyson and Brandy on representing SES and contributing to the national conversation on literacy success!
