A Message from the Principal
Dear Morse Street Families,
March provides a number of opportunities for us. Sustained learning time where we see all of the hard work by students from the first half of the year all starts to come together in independence and application across our grades. Our playground is messy, wet and muddy and provides many opportunities for creative problem solving, critical thinking, hands on free play, as well as opportunities to develop communication and conflict resolution skills with peers. At recess today, I observed kindergarteners working together to build a dam to stop water from flowing. The students generated an idea, came up with a plan and worked together to solve the problem. When it didn’t go as well as expected they tried again by revising their thinking and making a new plan.
At the beginning of the year we set students up with reminders about three ways to solve a problem:
Use your words
Walk away
Ask an adult for help
At this time of year we start to build on these strategies as part of Guidance class. During guidance class our school counselor, Kelley Herzog, is working with each grade to learn other ways they can solve small problems independently and practice using those skills. Below you will see the strategies taught so that you can coach and encourage your child to do the same at home when conflict arises with siblings or friends.
Warmly,
Julie Nickerson
It's Mud Season!
As the weather warms our playground can get messy and often times students will will have wet or muddy clothing when the return from recess and need to change their clothes.
Please make sure your child has a change of clothes at school.
Thank you!
