Principal's Message Principal's Message

Oct 16, 2026

Happy Friday,

Thank you to all the families who joined us for parent conferences! If you weren’t able to attend, report cards will be mailed home. You can also check grades through the Parent Portal. If your student needs additional help, please take advantage of our tutoring hours during the week and on the weekend.

Please make it a habit to check your student’s Schoology with them. I sit down with my own kids once a week to review their grades and assignments. I’m not the trusting parent—I like to see it for myself! A few minutes together can help catch missing assignments, celebrate progress, and identify where they may need support.

Next week, our 10th graders will take the PSAT! This is an opportunity to practice for college entrance exams and identify academic strengths and areas for growth. Please help your student arrive on time, well rested, and ready to do their best. Encourage them to take it seriously and use the experience to prepare for future opportunities.

Yours in service,

Juan Puentes
Principal, Marshall High School

Say Hey Day Say Hey Day

Say Hey Day drew a great crowd! It was wonderful to see our students connecting with one another and helping build a welcoming Marshall community. Our new Wellness Whale also made an appearance! Students also selected new outfits from our Community Closet. Events like these remind students that they belong and have people on campus who care about them.

On Friday, October 9, 38 seniors visited CSUN for APIDA ROOTS: Representing Our Origins, Traditions, and Stories! Students explored the campus, learned about college resources, and heard from student and faculty panels about support for Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American students. They also enjoyed boba and a performance of Tinikling, a traditional Filipino dance. It was a great opportunity to explore college possibilities while celebrating culture and community!

Celebrating Filipino Heritage Month Celebrating Filipino Heritage Month

Our Filipino Heritage Month display celebrates the rich culture and traditions of our Filipino community. Thank you to everyone who contributed items and helped bring it to life! Each culture is part of our Marshall quilt, and I want to continue sharing the stories and traditions that make our school special. If your family would like to help with an upcoming heritage celebration, please let us know.

The Great Shake The Great Shake

Our Great ShakeOut earthquake drill went very smoothly! We accounted for students through classroom rosters, practiced reuniting students with families, and had our Search and Rescue teams successfully locate all students acting as injured participants. I appreciate our students and staff taking the practice seriously. These drills help us strengthen our response and prepare to keep our school community safe during an emergency.

PSAT PSAT

Marshall High School will administer the PSAT to 10th-grade students and registered 11th-grade students on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

Location: Boys’ and Girls’ Gymnasiums and designated testing classrooms
Student Check-In: 8:15 AM
Testing Time: 8:30 AM–12:00 PM

Students should bring their LAUSD-issued Chromebook, fully charged, and student ID.

Important Reminders:
Students are expected to arrive on time and be ready for testing. Students who arrive late may not be admitted once testing has begun.

We understand that unexpected circumstances can happen, so we encourage families to plan ahead and ensure students arrive with enough time to get settled before testing begins.

Thank you for helping our students have a successful testing day!

Student Safety - ID Cards Student Safety - ID Cards

Students must carry their current 2026–2027 school ID at all times. This is a safety expectation. IDs help us verify who belongs on campus and ensure that only authorized students enter school events. Please make sure your student has their ID before leaving home each day.

A current ID is required for entry to the Homecoming game and dance. Students without one will not be admitted. Students also need their ID for school lunch, and not having it may delay service. If your student has lost their ID, please have them purchase a replacement at the Student Store for $5 before the events.

Phone, Earbud, and AI Enabled Glasses Phone, Earbud, and AI Enabled Glasses

Updated LAUSD Policy

Families, please help us keep our students focused and engaged by reinforcing LAUSD’s phone-free school day policy. The policy covers cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, wireless headphones, and smart glasses—including Meta and other AI-enabled glasses. These devices must be turned off and stored according to our school’s procedures throughout the school day, including nutrition and lunch, unless the student has an approved exception. Thank you for supporting a school environment where students can focus on learning and connecting with one another!

Campus Service Hours Campus Service Hours

We use campus service hours as an alternative consequence for school infractions, giving students an opportunity to take responsibility, contribute to our school community, and get back on track.

Students must have ZERO outstanding campus service hours to attend the Homecoming games and dance. Please check with your student now so they have time to complete any hours they owe.

Students can check Schoology for hours assigned through the Attendance and Deans’ offices.

Students can complete one hour after school each day, two hours on Tuesdays, or work off hours by attending Saturday School. Please contact Ms. Chavez in the Climate Office to confirm outstanding hours and get the list of available options.

October is also National Principals Month, and I want to take this opportunity to thank our Assistant Principals for all they do for Marshall. Thanks Ms. Montoya, Ms. Martinez, Ms. Aung, and Mr. Hermosillo. From supporting instruction and helping students to responding to the unexpected, their work keeps our school moving forward every day. Much of that work happens behind the scenes, but it makes a difference across our campus. I am grateful for their dedication, teamwork, and care for our students and staff. Thank you, APs!

October 1–31 is Filipino American History Month! This month recognizes the history, culture, and contributions of Filipino Americans. October was chosen to commemorate the first documented arrival of Filipinos in what is now the continental United States, at Morro Bay, California, on October 18, 1587. As we continue celebrating the cultures that make Marshall special, I encourage families, students, faculty and staff to find opportunities to bring Filipino American stories and experiences into our classrooms and recognize the heritage of our Filipino students, families, and colleagues.

What a way to celebrate Volleyball Senior Night! We honored our seniors and cheered on the team as they pulled out a tight 3–2 victory over Lincoln. The team also swept Wilson 3–0 on Monday, making it four straight wins! Congratulations to our seniors, and thank you to the families who came out to celebrate them.

Our football team heads to Lincoln tonight at 7 p.m. with an undefeated 7–0 record! Let’s keep the momentum going and show our Barristers some support.

Girls flag football faced tough competition this week, falling to Lincoln 20–0 and Franklin 27–6. They return to Lincoln this afternoon for another opportunity to compete. I appreciate the work our student-athletes put into representing Marshall!

Marshall PTSA Annual Fund Drive — September 17–October 8

Annual Fund Drive Update.

We did it! Together, we raised $47,541—surpassing our $45,000 goal in just three weeks!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our Marshall community, the 2026–2027 PTSA Annual Fund Drive was a success. Every gift, large or small, helped us reach this milestone, and every contribution makes a difference for our students.

Your support will help fund Arts, Athletics, Academics, and our beloved seniors’ graduation ceremony at the Greek Theatre.

From the field to the stage to the classroom, your generosity will make a meaningful impact on students across every grade.

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who made this possible: the donors who gave early and inspired others, the teachers and coaches who spread the word, our dedicated PTSA board and volunteers, and everyone who shared our message and cheered us on.

This is what it looks like when a community shows up for its students. We are so grateful to be part of it. Thank you!

Go Barristers!
