Camryn McQuery chose to begin her teaching career as Burnside's new second grade teacher.
A teacher from the very beginning
GET TO KNOW CAMRYN McQUERY
Burnside Elementary School had a midyear vacancy and the timing was right for Camryn McQuery. Having graduated this winter from Waldorf University, she stepped into her second grade classroom as second semester began.
"Throughout my schooling, I spent many hours in the classroom and also worked at an Educare during past summers. This year marks my first official classroom of my own," she said. (Educare is a comprehensive, research-based, center-based early childhood education model serving children from birth to age five in under-resourced communities.)
What are your hopes as you join Red Wing Public Schools?
I hope to continue growing as a teacher while being part of an amazing, supportive community.
When did you realize you wanted to teach?
As soon as I knew what a teacher was — and could talk — I knew it was my calling. At school, I always imagined myself as the teacher, and when I got home I made my brother and cousins play school with me. I also saw firsthand how impactful inclusion and equitable decision-making can be, which inspired me to pursue a career that provides those experiences for others. I’ve truly never wanted to be anything other than a teacher.
What has stood out to you during your first few weeks?
What has stood out the most is how welcoming the entire school community has been. The support and help I’ve received has been amazing, and I’m incredibly thankful to have such a great group of students to teach.
Do you have any pets?
Yes! I have a spunky labradoodle named Lucy and an adventurous black cat named Zeus. Over spring break, we’re adding a new family member — a German Shorthaired Pointer puppy named Nash!
School Readiness Survey
What are your thoughts on early learning?
Right now, fewer than half of Red Wing’s kindergarten students are considered fully ready when they start school.
When we talk about children being “ready” for kindergarten, we’re not talking about being perfect or ahead academically. Readiness is about whether children have the basic skills and supports that help them feel confident and ready to learn in a classroom.
Red Wing Public Schools will survey the community Feb. 1-23 as part of a listening-and-learning effort. Your input matters as we work together to support our youngest learners.

In January, the AICE Hub explored the implications of the newly approved Board Policy 524.1 which governs the use of AI in RWPS.

District News
Board members to share what they learned
Red Wing School Board members will dedicate their first workshop of 2026 to sharing what they learned at the Minnesota School Boards Association Leadership Conference Jan. 15-16. The workshop will get underway at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Red Wing High School room J110.
All seven members and the superintendent attended the annual conference, which offered sessions in artificial intelligence in schools, teacher retention, school finance/levies, board-superintendent relations, student voice, and navigating political pressures.
The board also will discuss raising the district’s mandatory fund balance. Currently, district policy requires general fund reserves of no less than 5%. For 2025-2026, the balance is running 15-18%, which is considered healthy.
The workshop will be recorded but not livestreamed. See the full agenda on the BoardBook.
