Next week, scholars will begin the week by taking a district-required assessment on Monday and Tuesday. This assessment is designed to help prepare students for the CAPE exam in the spring and will give us important insight into their reading and writing progress. We are encouraging all scholars to take their time, apply the strategies we’ve practiced, and do their very best.
Following the assessment, we will shift our focus back to Unit 3 as students continue planning and begin drafting their culminating Literary Analysis Essay. In this essay, scholars will respond to the prompt: How does Jonas’s view of his community change from the beginning of the story to the end? Students will work to develop clear claims, select strong textual evidence, and explain their thinking with detailed reasoning.
The outline for the essay is due in class on Thursday, April 2nd. By the end of the week, scholars should have a strong draft in progress. We will continue building toward a final polished essay, with a focus on organization, clarity, and using evidence effectively. The deadline for final drafts is Tuesday, April 7th.
As always, please encourage your scholars to read for 20 minutes each night and to reach out via Canvas if they have any questions or need additional support.
Math with Mx. Gomez
I will be accompanying one of the 8th Grade World Language trips during the week before Spring Break. All retakes and makeup work must be submitted by Friday. To support students, I will be available after school every day next week for retakes and for any questions related to the review materials provided.
6th Grade Accelerated Math
Students will begin the week with a focus on statistical questions, including mode, median, range, and mean, as well as interpreting histograms, bar graphs, and dot plots. We will end the week by applying these skills to the area of complex figures.
Please encourage students to take advantage of afterschool support if they need help completing review assignments or preparing for retakes.
7th Grade Math
Next week, students will continue their work with geometric measurement. We will explore the volume of pyramids, investigate how many cubes fit inside a prism, and wrap up the week with area of complex figures. While I am out, all lessons will be aligned to Zearn or Amplify to ensure continuity and support. Students will begin the week with a focus on statistical questions, including mode, median, range, and mean, as well as interpreting histograms, bar graphs, and dot plots.
Please encourage students to take advantage of afterschool support if they need help completing review assignments or preparing for retakes.

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft
This week, students continued their exploration of portraiture by engaging in deeper portrait investigations. They also participated in a virtual follow-up session with staff from the National Portrait Gallery, where they strengthened their understanding of how portraits can communicate identity, culture, and global citizenship.
Students then began their Summative Assessment (Criterion A): Global Citizen Portrait Project, which brings together art, culture, and global citizenship. For this project, students selected a notable individual from Latin America (or of Latin American descent) from a curated list. They brainstormed how to visually represent their chosen individual and have started creating their portraits.
Once completed, students will also write a three-paragraph letter explaining how their selected individual demonstrates the qualities of a global citizen. This project is due on Tuesday, March 31st, and students will present their work in class.
On Friday, students will participate in a Geo Bee. This is a low-stakes, fun competition where students can test their geography knowledge, and five students per team will advance to compete against other 6th grade teams on Tuesday, April 7th.
Here is the new wishlist link if you would like to donate to the Geography classroom.

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan
Hello scientists!
Last week, students examined how nature’s quest to achieve equilibrium creates different weather conditions, and how weather fronts create specific atmospheric conditions.
We have moved our weather diary assignment to next week in order to help students track a very warm air mass that is predicted to be moving over DC during the middle of next week. Students will combine their observations of local weather patterns with next week’s focus on weather maps and forecasting.
Next Friday is also the last week of the 3rd quarter, and all late assignments must be turned in by that date. Please help your student look through their Aspen and their homework folder for any missing assignments!
Notes from MLL Support
Last week we completed iReady rotations on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and read 180 student application on Tuesday, and Thursday. In the teacher stations, Code 1 students focused on segmenting words into sounds; Code 2 students worked on segmenting words into sounds; Comprehension students worked on the summary of a video about contagions.
