What we learned last week?
Students continued to strengthen their mental math skills using partial sums and differences.
Reading:
Students noticed the cause-and-effect relationship between events in Starry Messenger and practice elaborating in explanatory writing.
Students explored two elements of Peter Sís’s Starry Messenger to discover how nonliteral language and illustrations support deeper meanings of the text. Students wrote two body paragraphs of an essay explaining why the stars had left Galileo’s eyes.
Students analyzed how Peter Sís combines text features, illustrations, and language to create a text rich in meaning. Students examined conclusion paragraphs in explanatory writing.
Students continued their Native American social studies unit by learning about the Native American tribe Sioux.
Homework
3rd grade does assign homework every week, except on breaks.
Homework is assigned on Mondays and due on Fridays.

Holidays
Students will be celebrating the upcoming holidays with their homeroom classroom on Friday, December 20th. If you would like more information on the activities that will be held during the celebration or you would like to donate some goodies for the celebration, please email your child's homeroom teacher.
Math
Next week in math we will continue working on adding and subtracting numbers up to 3 digits. We have worked on different strategies such as partial sums and regrouping. Next week we will begin applying these strategies to real world scenarios and reading graphs.
Reading/Writing
Using the text, Starry Messenger....
Students took a New-Read Assessment to identify areas of strength and weakness, as well as any patterns in student learning. Some of the skills that are tested are...
–Students answer questions by finding information explicitly stated in the text.
–Students use context clues to clarify the meaning of a new word.
–Students correctly identify the sequence of events in a text.
–Students understand how linking words establish cause-and-effect relationships between ideas.
Students use text evidence from the main text, the illustrations, and text features to support the essential meaning of the text.
Review conclusion paragraphs write one collaboratively,
Social Studies
This week students will pick one of the six tribes to complete an informational poster on with their group members.

EIP
Hello!
Here is a form for a strategy you can use at home to assist your students with solving math word problems.
Reading Specialist Advice
We’re educators who focus on helping students improve their literacy skills(phonics, fluency, reading comprehension, etc). We provide specialized instruction to support students individually and/or small groups. At the beginning of the school year, we evaluate/assess students to identify the needs and collaborate with teachers to determine how to best help students.
Reading Tips
Kids Reading Practice at Home (Name Words and Describing Words)
IRR
Students should practice skip counting to help them with multiplication!
Here are some activities you can try at home to practice skip counting:
- Hopscotch: Use sidewalk chalk to mark out a grid and play hopscotch.
Read skip counting books: Picture books with activities and problems can help students enjoy skip counting more.
- Make skip counting art: Combine grouping with pointillism, the technique of making art from tiny dots, using cotton swabs and poster paint.
- Building blocks: Ask your child to skip count to a number by making towers with building blocks. For example, to skip count to 15 by 3, they could make five towers with three building blocks in each.
Counseling
Not only are we here to help your child in their academics, but we are also her to help them navigate their social-emotional learning journey!
Feel free to check out the Counseling Corner, it has many helpful tips!

Additional Information
Transportation
If there is a change in transportation arrangements, we require notice from the parent before allowing students to be transported by anyone other than a parent. You may send in a note with your child or email parkstreet@marietta-city.org with the details of the change. We do not allow students to walk or to ride home with unauthorized people. If you must make a change during the day, notify the school office staff before 2:30 p.m.
Pick-up by Car in the Afternoon
Anyone picking up a child must have his/her Panther Car Tag. If you do not have a Panther Car Tag, you may get one by coming to the front office.
Tardy Drop-Off
When a student arrives late (after 8:30), an adult must sign the student in at the office.
Early Pick-Up
Please limit early pick-up of children to emergencies and appointments. If a child is out for any portion of the school day, the missed time is recorded as a tardy. A note sent in the morning will help us to have your child ready. To avoid interruptions to instruction, no student will be released between 2:45 and 3:15. Parents will be asked to wait for the dismissal bell. Come to the office to check out a student. Please be prepared to present photo identification upon request. No student will be released to an unknown or unauthorized person.
Late Pick-Up
Students waiting to be picked up will be supervised until 3:30. After 3:30 they may be sent to the After School Program if they are pre-registered ($10 fee). Regular after school charges will apply. Many parents sign up for the program so their children can attend in case of emergency.
