CTE Month Spotlight!
The Yerington High School Nursing Assistant Program
Lyon County School District is proud to spotlight the Nursing Assistant Program at Yerington High School, led by Windi Altemeyer, as part of Career and Technical Education Month.
This program provides students with an outstanding pathway into the medical field by offering hands-on, real-world learning experiences that prepare them for future careers in healthcare. Students gain valuable pre-required skills and knowledge that serve as a strong foundation for careers such as nursing, medical assisting, and other health-related professions.
Mrs. Altemeyer is a dedicated and inspiring instructor who leads the Nursing Assistant programs across the district, including Silver Stage High School, Fernley High School, Dayton High School, and Yerington High School. Her leadership ensures consistency, quality instruction, and meaningful opportunities for students districtwide.
The Nursing Assistant course is a dual credit program with Western Nevada College, allowing students to earn college credit while still in high school. For students pursuing their Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, the program also includes required clinical hours. Currently, students complete these clinical experiences at Carson-Tahoe Medical Center, giving them invaluable exposure to professional healthcare settings.
This program shows the power of CTE by combining rigorous instruction, hands-on learning, and real-world experience — all while helping students take confident steps toward their future careers.
