A Message From Our Administration... A Message From Our Administration...

Dear Huskies,

Our 4th Quarter officially started today, 04/07/2025. We are so proud of the hard work and dedication to learning that our students have shown over the past several months. We look forward to finishing the school year strong! Our 3rd Quarter report cards will be issued to families on Friday, 04/25/2025. Please take a moment to sit down with your students to set goals for the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year.

We have definitely reached the busiest time of the school year. Events such as our annual Red Carpet Gala (05/06/25) and our annual Sneaker Ball (schoolwide, 05/16/25) are coming up fast! Please make sure to take a moment each week to read not only the grade level messages sent via Canvas from your student's teacher but also our community blasts and monthly newsletters.

Please also look for more information in the coming weeks regarding important end-of-year activities - such as special events, exciting field trips, and closing ceremonies for RECC, Kindergarten, and Fifth Grade (date announced below). This is especially true for our Fifth Grade "graduates", as they prepare for their transition to Middle School. See the section below dedicated to "Important Fifth Grade News", which includes several important dates - including our Fifth Grade closing ceremony (graduation).

As always, we truly value the home-to-school connection we have built with our families and want to thank you in advance for your continued support as we navigate our wonderful end-of-year traditions. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to a member of our administration or the Front Office.

Warmly,

Mr. Todd, HHES Principal

Mrs. Kanter, HHES Assistant Principal

Mrs. Alexander, HHES Administrative Intern

UPDATE: 24-25 HCPSS Calendar UPDATE: 24-25 HCPSS Calendar

zoom_out_map

The HCPSS 24-25 school year calendar included five inclement weather days, 06/12/24-06/13/25 and 06/16/25-06/18/25. As of 02/28/25, HCPSS has used six inclement weather days. In order to meet the state mandated 180 days for students, HCPSS must add a day to the school year calendar.

At the recent 02/27/25 meeting, the Board of Education approved making Monday, 03/31/25, a full day for students, shifting the scheduled Professional Work and Development Day for school staff to Monday, 04/14/25, which coincides with the first day of spring break. (As a result, students will have a full day of school on 03/31/25.) HCPSS also requested a waiver for the sixth inclement weather day from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), but it was not approved.

Barring any additional inclement weather days, the last day of the 2024-2025 school year is now scheduled for Wednesday, 06/18/25.

Updates to the June calendar include the following:

  • Friday, 06/06/25: All Schools Dismiss 3 hours Early. HHES dismisses at 12:55PM. No half-day pre-K/RECC.
  • Monday, 06/09/25-Friday, 06/13/25: Full Days
  • Monday, 06/16/25-Tuesday, 06/17/25: All Schools Dismiss 3 hours Early. HHES dismisses at 12:55PM. No half-day pre-K/RECC.
  • Wednesday, 06/18/25: Last Day of School. All Schools Dismiss 3 hours Early. HHES dismisses at 12:55PM. No half-day pre-K/RECC.

An UPDATED HCPSS CALENDAR can be found online.

Spring Testing Information Spring Testing Information

zoom_out_map

We are approaching our state testing season which will kick off with our 5th graders in March. Our students have been working hard all year and this will be their opportunity to show what they know in regards to the standards they have been taught. Please see the testing dates below for grades 3-5.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please try to have students here and on time on testing days so they do not need to be pulled out of class instruction for make-up sessions.

  • Please avoid coming to sign students out early during testing sessions. Once a student leaves, they are not able to restart that test session.

  • Personal electronic devices (cell phones, iPads, smart watches, etc.) are not permitted in the testing areas.

  • Routine is important when calming any nerves when it comes to testing. Keeping to normal routines both at home and at school will help students to do their best.

  • Students need plenty of sleep in order to maintain the stamina needed to do their best.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your homeroom teacher or Ms. Kanter at wendy_kanter@hcpss.org.

WALKERS: As a reminder, student walkers in grades 1 through 5 are dismissed through the front door. Parents who wish to pick their student up as a car rider must enter the car line. Please do not instruct your walker or car rider to meet you in the back parking lot, where van riders are dismissed, as it is a safety concern and student walkers are not monitored in that lot. Please park your vehicle and meet your student in the front of the building. Students who attempt to dismiss through the back of the building will be redirected to the front door. RECC and kindergarten walkers will continue to dismiss through the RECC and K doors. AM car riders must also be dropped off in the front of the building.

EARLY DISMISSALS: Picking your student up early for an appointment? If you are dismissing your student early, students must be picked up no later than 3:15PM for early dismissal. Furthermore, all afternoon transportation changes must be made prior to 2:30PM.

With the cold and flu season soon upon us, parents and/or guardians are asked to alert our attendance secretary, Ms. Yates, if your student is absent for an illness or appointment. Absence notification emails can be sent to hhesabsence@hcpss.org. Please include the reason for your student's absence in the body of the email in order for it to be excused. All families should perform daily health checks and may not enter any HCPSS building or assigned bus if they exhibit any signs of a communicable disease. Applicable health forms and general Health Services information can be found HERE. 24-25 HHES Lunch Schedule 24-25 HHES Lunch Schedule

zoom_out_map
Please see below for the updated 24-25 lunch schedule. Please note that families may now join their student for lunch during their student's scheduled lunch time. Visitors MUST be ages 18 years or older AND must be listed on the current/updated Family File. Visitors of students with an incomplete Family File will be turned away until their emergency information is updated and current. Infant and/or toddler siblings are not authorized to enter the cafeteria during scheduled lunch times. Due to HCPSS safety guidelines, families may not visit during recess time. Visitors are required to sign-in at our Lobby Guard machine using their license or state issued ID. You are welcome to bring an outside lunch for your student only. Volunteer information can be found on our website at https://hhes.hcpss.org/support.

IMPORTANT: HCPSS School and Policy Reminders IMPORTANT: HCPSS School and Policy Reminders

WEATHER GUIDELINES/RECESS: Per HCPSS Policy 9090, each elementary school will typically provide a 30 minute daily recess, preferably outdoors. Generally, students will be outside for recess when the temperature combined with the wind chill is not less than 20 degrees or the heat index reading is no more than 95 degrees. Children are expected to wear clothing appropriate for forecasted conditions when participating in recess or outside activities. For more information related to Policy 9090, including general guidelines related to weather and outdoor recess, CLICK HERE.

HCPSS SCHOOL VISITATION POLICY: With the exception of visitation during your student's assigned lunch time, in order to limit interruptions to instruction and maximize safety for all, visitors are asked to follow the HCPSS procedures below:

  • Parents or guardians requesting visitation must contact their student's teacher and the administration at least 24 hours in advance to discuss the purpose of the visit and to establish a convenient time for both the visitor and the school. Visitors must receive prior approval before entering the classroom and/or building. As not to disturb academic routines and instruction, approved visitors must remain in the agreed upon classroom or other building location for the approved window of time (not to exceed 60 minutes). Teachers may request that visits be rescheduled to serve instructional needs and our students overall best interests.
  • All approved visitors must sign in at the main office, receive a visitor badge, and sign an authorization and confidentiality form. Visitors are required to provide a photo ID to be used at our LobbyGuard system.
  • For the safety and security of our school community, visitors are not authorized to escort their student through the building during arrival or dismissal time, or throughout the instructional school day. For more information, CLICK HERE.
  • A signed HCPSS Confidentiality Agreement is required by all approved visitors prior to their visit and/or observation.

HCPSS POLICY 9400 - STUDENT BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION: The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is committed to providing a safe, engaging, and supportive school environment that fosters the social and emotional safety, dignity, and well-being of all students. HCPSS acknowledges the need for employees to:

  1. Use an array of research-based positive behavior interventions, strategies, and supports to address student behaviors and keep students safe.
  2. Minimize the practice of exclusion from the classroom environment.
  3. Minimize the practice of physical restraint, which may only be used when necessary to protect a student or other person from imminent, serious, or physical harm - and only after other less intrusive, nonphysical interventions have failed or been determined inappropriate.

It is an expectation that HCPSS employees will be responsive to all incidents of exclusion or physical restraint and appropriately case manage impacted students to minimize unsafe behaviors and maximize instructional engagement. Additional information can be found at HCPSS Policy 9400 - Student Behavior Intervention. If you have any questions regarding this policy or its implementation, please contact a school administrator.

BULLY PREVENTION: The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all students. Preventing bullying is an important part of this goal. HCPSS Policy 9460 states that bullying, cyberbullying, harassment, and intimidation are prohibited in HCPSS. Our administration and staff have been trained and made aware of this policy, as well as of preventative and responsive measures. We know how important your role is in not only supporting your children, but also reporting possible incidents as you become aware of them. The Bullying, Cyberbullying, Harassment and Intimidation (BCHI Reporting Form) should be used to report all alleged incidents of bullying, cyberbullying, harassment, and intimidation that occur at school or have a connection back to the school setting. The BCHI Reporting Form is available online and can easily and confidentially be used by students, staff, and family members. Your student's safety and wellbeing is our number one priority. For more information regarding HCPSS Policy 9460, CLICK HERE. There are times when incidents of peer conflict or code of conduct offenses may occur that may not be bullying, but still may need follow up action. If you become aware of something that falls under conflict and/or a code of conduct offense, please notify a school administrator via email or phone call so that they can become aware and follow up as needed.

USE OF STUDENT PHONES/DEVICES: HCPSS Policy 8080, Responsible Use of Technology, Digital Tools and Social Media, guides personal technology device use in schools. This includes phones, tablets, digital watches, and other electronic devices. As it currently stands, HCPSS permits elementary school students to bring personal technology devices to school as long as all personal technology devices are stored in their backpacks during the school day. Students are not authorized to make phone calls or to access the internet from their device while in the building during the school day. Should your student have a concern or need to contact you during school hours, they are directed to alert a staff member or to stop by the front office.

RECESS VISITATION GUIDELINES: The Office of School Safety, Security and Risk Management, in collaboration with School Management and Instructional Leadership, reviewed county wide practices regarding school visits and it has been determined that parents are no longer able to visit during recess. Parents can continue to eat lunch with their child if they complete the required visitation guidelines. For more general recess guidelines related to Policy 9090, CLICK HERE.

OUTSIDE FOOD PROTOCOL: For the safety and security of our students, we cannot accept outside food delivery for your student, such as Door Dash or Uber Eats. Any food deliveries by an outside vendor will be turned away. A parent/guardian or approved emergency contact on your student's updated Family File is welcome to drop off lunch for your student. ID will be required at the time of drop off.
