CRMS Summer Reading 2024
May 6, 2024
Summer Reading Bookmark Challenge
This easy list of reading activities is a great way to enjoy reading all summer! Use the hashtag #CanyonRidgeReads on social media, and share your best reading photos with Mrs. Wright! We'll celebrate participants when you return to school in August. (See Beanstack to find each of these activities in our online challenge, too.)
May Reading Challenge
Access Beanstack through Launchpad to record reading minutes before May 20th
Readers earn digital tickets for every authentic 90 minute block of reading they record in Beanstack, which they can "spend" toward the prize drawing(s) of their choice. Reading minutes and completed books also count against other schools in the district, and for ongoing community reading goals.
Book love is a huge focus for librarians, and making our reading visible is part of that goal on our campus. As students and staff track their books and minutes read, they can see patterns in reading habits, re-visit favorite titles, authors, and genres, and branch out to try new books.
Watch Beanstack for a variety of reading challenges from May through August
All Library Books are due back May 15, 2024
Now is the time to start finding missing books. Students can check out books through May 10th, 2024.
Summer Library Books
Students who complete the summer book form, have clear library accounts, and get the form signed by a parent can check out up to 10 books to take home to read over the summer. Forms are due May 16; choose your books the last week of school. Pick up a form in CRMS Library.
Reading Rumble May 9th
CRMS teams will be competing against other LISD middle school libraries to answer questions about this year's Lone Star book list. They have been preparing all year - good luck to Team Blue, Team Muskareaders, Team Reading Stars, and Team Emotional Support Potato!
Graphic Design Opportunity
Calling all CRMS Student Designers
Library Aides and CRMS students have been designing book recommendations, library event reels, and pro-reading messages to post on our Canyon Ridge Reads Instagram page. You can use Canva or other design tools to create your picture and share it with Mrs. Wright to post. You might create a Lego figure spokesperson for your book recommendations, or your dog, or a stuffed animal, or just use book covers without a mascot. We hope to draw attention to lots of different books for readers to discover, so highlight your favorites and keep them coming all summer! Families - follow the Canyon Ridge Library Facebook page, the Canyon Ridge Reads Instagram page, and use our hashtag #CanyonRidgeReads to highlight your reading this summer. Here are some examples:

Murder Most Unladylike Book Recommendation

Student Showcase
CRMS Library is preparing to debut a Student Showcase website featuring creative writing, art, engineering, and video projects by students. 6th graders tried a short project called "If You Knew," where they brainstormed, drafted, and recorded poetry about topics they knew a lot about. Other CRMS students are invited to create 1-2 minute audio recordings or videos about any school-appropriate topic - from what it's like to sink a free throw, or growing up in a town outside of Texas, or fun facts about sea otters, or any researched or persuasive or interesting take on a topic of your choice. Share your videos with Mrs. Wright in Google Drive if you'd like to have them considered for the showcase website.
Photo Contest Opportunity
Literary Pets
Celebrate your pet's love for literature with a creative photo this summer! Maybe your dog is "reading" The One and Only Ivan next to his stuffed gorilla, or your betta fish is reading a book about surfing, or your turtle is reading Aesop's Fables. We'll display the photo entries when we return to school in August, so share your photo with Mrs. Wright by Friday, August 2nd. See details on the Photo Entry Form.
Maker Day - Friday, May 17th
Students who read this newsletter can stop by the library to pick up a Maker Day pass - while supplies last. Stop by any time during the school day on Friday, May 17th, from 10:00 to 4:00 (with your pass and approval from your classroom teacher) to build structures, make jewelry, origami, Perler bead projects, paper crafts, and more. Staff are welcome, too!
Issues with Lost Library Books
If you have overdue library books on your account, please take time to find and return them as soon as you can. If it's lost, use the online school store at the link above to pay for a replacement copy. If you have a fine listed for a lost book, it will be deleted as soon as the book is returned and scanned in. If you think you returned a book that is listed as overdue or lost on your account, please send Mrs. Wright a polite email and she will be happy to check again to see if it's on the shelves - and please do an extra check around the house as well. With over 1000 students, multiple library aides and volunteers, and so much library use, we appreciate good communication and we are here to help!
Next Year in the Library
We are gearing up for some exciting collaborations with CRMS staff, fun events, library lessons, and programming. We would love any support you can offer in the form of donations - some are reading incentives or contest prizes, some are materials for activities and contests, and some are for our ongoing makerspace stations. Our library supports over 1100 students and staff members, and we are excited to offer the very best opportunities for our school community. Thank you for your support!
