Otter Up!
August 3rd, 2026

Good Evening Shoal Creek Families!
We had a wonderful 1st full week of school!
Students continued to review schoolwide expectations, classroom routines and enjoyed a picnic style lunch on Tuesday. Thank you to our 2nd-5th grade families for attending Back to School night this past week. The partnership between school and home is critical to student success. Thank you for taking the time to meet your child's teacher and learning more about what to expect this school year! We ended the week with a fun family picnic on Friday evening, where families relaxed on our field and Otters played different games and activities.
We appreciate you for working with us and being patient in the parking lot during arrival and dismissal times. We have found our system to be quick and efficient when families work together to be safe and quick during dropoff.
Just a reminder, our gates close when the 7:45am bell rings. Students who arrive after the gates close will enter through the office and receive a tardy pass. Tardies are recorded as part of a student's attendance record.
This week we have picture day (schedule information is below) and on Friday, students will have their first VAPA Vision lesson of the year.
We look forward to another great week!

Parent Education Workshops
Our Caring Connections Counseling center is offering fee-based Parent Education courses in September. There are several NEW course offerings. Visit the website for more information!
New ParentVue Mobile App
Edupoint has released a modernized ParentVUE (New) mobile application and retired the older ParentVUE app. Families should download the updated version to maintain access to student grades, schedules, and attendance records. Here are some easy directions you might provide to families:
How to Get Started with ParentVUE (New)
Remove Old App: Delete the old ParentVUE app from your phone first so the new version functions correctly.
Download: Search for ParentVUE (New) directly in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or follow the upgrade prompt inside your legacy (old) ParentVUE app.
Connect to District: Open the new app, swipe through the intro, and search for your school district using your postal zip code.
Log In: If prompted, select "Already Activated" if you already have an account, and sign in using your existing username and password.
VAPA Vision
This Friday we will begin our VAPA Vision, with PUSD VAPA Vision teachers. The VAPA VISION program is an exciting initiative designed for K-5th grade students, integrating the five essential strands of Visual and Performing Arts: Media Arts, Dance, Theater, Music, and Visual Arts. You can learn more about it here and here.
School Attendance
Did You Know?
Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
Students can still fall behind if they miss just one or two days every few weeks.
Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.
What Can You Do?
Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up.
Schedule non-urgent related medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session.
If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
If your child must be absent from school, request an OCIS (Off Campus Independent Study) Contract through the school’s front office.
What Happens If My Child Is Absent Frequently?
After 12 missed days of school (excused or unexcused absences) you will begin receiving letters from the school notifying you that your child is now considered chronically absent. The school will be in contact with families (meetings to address attendance concerns, barriers and solutions, possible home visits, etc.)
If your child is attending school on an IDT, the IDT may be revoked.
At Shoal Creek Elementary, we are here to partner with families and support our students. If you need assistance regarding your child’s attendance, please contact our Principal, Harmeena Omoto at homoto@powayusd.com or call the front office at 858-613-9080.

College Shirts

If you are able to, please consider including an additional donation to support the students of Shoal Creek and the Shoal Creek PTA. Thank you!

Celebrate your child’s September birthday by announcing it on Shoal Creek’s Birthday Banner! These announcements are completely unique to each student and will include your child’s first name and last initial, birthday (month and day), favorite color, and top 3 favorite activities or interests (hobbies, sports, etc). Once their birthday is over, they’ll get to take their announcement home as a keepsake. Head to our birthday banner page HERE for more info.
