A Message from Toni
Dear Community Families,
Parade of Masks, our first big event of the school year is almost here! Join us on Friday, October 30, from 12:30–2:15 p.m. on the Upper Yard for one of our favorite Community traditions!
Get ready for a little Halloween magic as our campus fills with ghosts, goblins, superheroes, princesses, and who knows what else! Students will show off their costumes during our annual parade, followed by an afternoon of fun with games, activity booths, prizes, treats, and a special Día de los Muertos area. And since we're embracing a camping theme this year, get ready for s'more spooky fun!
We want everyone to have a fun and safe celebration! Please keep the following guidelines in mind when helping your child plan a costume:
Keep it school-appropriate. Costumes should be fun and suitable for an elementary school setting. Please avoid excessively scary, violent, or revealing costumes.
No weapons or weapon-like accessories. Toy guns, swords, knives, and other imitation weapons should remain at home.
Choose comfortable costumes and shoes. Students should be able to walk, play, and participate safely. Avoid long, dragging costumes or accessories that could cause tripping.
Keep blood and gore to a minimum. Please remember that we have young children on campus who may find frightening costumes upsetting.
Be mindful of cultural sensitivity. Costumes should not stereotype or make fun of anyone's race, ethnicity, religion, or culture.
More Important Details. See the POM flyer below for more important details.
A reminder to families: For everyone's safety, please follow campus check-in procedures, remain in designated areas, and help us keep walkways and activity areas clear. Students must remain under staff supervision during the school day.
We'll also take time to recognize Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a beautiful Mexican tradition celebrated on November 1 and 2 that honors and remembers loved ones who have passed away.
Unlike Halloween, Día de los Muertos is not about being spooky or scary. It's a joyful celebration of life, family, and remembrance, often featuring colorful decorations, marigolds, photographs, and ofrendas (altars) displaying meaningful items in honor of loved ones. We're excited to share this special cultural tradition with our students and families as part of our celebration.
Parents and siblings are invited to join us for the festivities! A special thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who are helping make this celebration possible. There's nothing quite like seeing the excitement on our students' faces during this beloved Community tradition!
We all know what happens once Halloween comes and goes… it's full steam ahead through the winter holidays! Before we know it, we'll be preparing for our Winter Program, celebrating the season, and counting down the days until winter break. Where does the time go?!
One more treat before the weekend is over! Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 1, at 2:00 a.m. Don't forget to turn your clocks back one hour. We get an extra hour of sleep— that's probably the best Halloween treat we could ask for!
Enjoy the Parade of Masks, and have a spooktacular Halloween weekend with your little goblins!
Best,
Toni

Attendance Matters: Show Up and Shine!
Weekly Attendance Update
Did you know that LAUSD monitors student attendance using three main performance categories? These categories help families understand how regularly their children are attending school and when absences may become a concern.
Proficient Attendance (96–100%) — Meeting the Goal!
Students in this category attend school at least 96% of the time, missing no more than 7 days during the entire school year. This is LAUSD's attendance goal for every student! Students with 100% attendance are considered Advanced, while those with 96–99% are Proficient. Together, these students are recognized for Excellent Attendance.
Basic Attendance (92–95%) — Room for Improvement!
Students in this category miss approximately 8–14 days during the school year. While this may not seem like much, those missed days add up to valuable instructional time. Students in this category are encouraged to improve their attendance to reach the Proficient level.
Chronic Absenteeism (91% or Below) — Time to Take Action!
Students who miss approximately 15 or more days during the school year fall into LAUSD's chronic absenteeism category. This includes students in the Below Basic and Far Below Basic attendance bands. Frequent absences can make it difficult for students to keep up with instruction, participate in classroom activities, and maintain academic progress.
Our Goal: 96% or Higher!
Remember, attendance percentages are calculated throughout the school year, so even a few absences early in the year can significantly affect a student's attendance rate.
We understand that children get sick and sometimes need to stay home. However, we encourage families to schedule vacations and non-urgent appointments outside school hours whenever possible.
Every day counts, and every day of learning matters! Let's work together to keep our students in school, engaged, and learning!

How to Opt-In to Connect Notification System
HOW TO OPT-IN TO CONNECT NOTIFICATION SYSTEM
Here is the information on how to opt in to BBC messages if users accidentally opt out of messages. Opt-Out/Opt-In: Connect Notification System
The Connect system allows individuals receiving calls, emails or texts to Opt-Out from getting future communications.
- At the end of every call, Opt-Out instructions will be heard. The recipient can press the appropriate number to Opt-Out the phone number on which they are receiving the call. Alternatively, they can dial (855) 502-7867 to Opt-Out.
- This will impact receiving Outreach (general) messages and Blackboard Teacher Communication messages. It does not impact Attendance or Emergency calls sent by schools, local districts or central district offices. Attendance and Emergency calls directly impact the safety of students and staff and will continue to be delivered by the system.
- If an erroneous call is being made to a non-parent or non-employee, and they have already Opted-Out using the automated system, there is still the potential for them to receive Attendance and Emergency calls. To fully prevent calls from being made to this erroneous number, it must be corrected on the MiSiS Parent/Guardian Information screen for K-12 schools or the appropriate screen in EESIS and DACESIS for Early Education Centers and Adult schools, respectively. For employees, the correction must occur in the Employee Self-Service system (ess.lausd.net). Deleting the number directly from Connect will only be effective for 24 hours or until the next LAUSD data file is received by Finalsite.
- Parents and employees can choose to Opt back into receiving Outreach (general) messages by calling (855) 502-7867 for any phone number that was previously Opted-Out.
- Parents and employees can choose to Opt back in to receiving Text messages by texting "START LAUSD" to 91841.
- For opting emails back in, please contact the Mass Notification (formerly Blackboard) Office (see Contact Us).
- Teacher Communication messages will also include the same Opt-Out instructions.
- For every text and email message sent, the recipient will also be provided instructions on how to Opt-Out from receiving future messages.
