NOVEMBER 2024 - INSIDE THE WHHS LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
WHIS WITH TONY MCALEER AND PETER HUTCHISON
On October 24, we welcomed Tony McAleer and Peter Hutchison. They are the author and filmmaker behind the documentary The Cure for Hate: Bearing Witness to Auschwitz. McLeer is the author of The Cure for Hate: A Former White Supremacist's Journey from Violent Extremism to Radical Compassion and Hutchison is the New York Times bestselling author of Requiem for the American Dream.
We were also joined by students from Dickson Intermediate STEAM Academy and Deer Lakes High School. Thank you to Film Pittsburgh for the opportunity!
WHIS WITH JOLENE MCILWAIN
On November 6, we will welcome author Jolene McIlwain for the Woodland Hills Interaction Series. McIlwain is the author of the short story collection Sidle Creek, which was named a Best Book of the Year by NPR and Library Journal.
We will also have librarians from around the county in attendance to experience what kind of author experiences we bring to our students!
LITTLE FREE LIBRARY
Two of our interns just filled our brand new Little Free Library! It is located near the entry to the high school and ready for use! We are excited to share great reads with our school community.
NOVEMBER IS NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
It's Native American Heritage Month and we have a book for you. Mr. McGuire recommends THERE THERE by Tommy Orange.
SLOVAK HERITAGE FESTIVAL
Mr. McGuire will present some of his research about Thomas Bell and OUT OF THIS FURNACE next week at the University of Pittsburgh's Slovak Heritage Festival. Stop by for the lecture and some great food, too!
School Libraries Transform Learning
"These benefits are primarily set in motion by the school librarian. Over time, there have been efforts to move away from thinking about the school librarian’s role as simply a “keeper of books” and view them as more of a “chief information officer,” to fully capture their responsibilities in a school ecosystem. While books certainly play a role in a school library, school librarians ignite the sparks of interest in reading within their students by making students feel included through their library collections, helping increase reading stamina, and encouraging students to explore new genres. This is especially important because reading for pleasure has been shown to contribute to improved literacy outcomes."
