Spiritual Life - Little Bites from Heaven

What are Little Bites from Heaven? The Spiritual Life Committee knows how important faith is to our families at DeSales. However, we also know families lead busy lives and finding time to sit down to foster that faith, read the Bible together and answer the questions our children have about God sometimes takes a back seat to other things. That’s why we think Little Bites from Heaven is a great tool to do just this. Dinnertime allows an opportunity to connect over food while having fun, joyful and meaningful faith-building conversations with your children. Little Bites from Heaven provides devotional time for all family members that includes scripture, questions to discuss and a short devotional. It’s as simple as read the scripture and devotion and discuss the questions together. We believe Little Bites from Heaven will help to prioritize what is most important and at the same time, foster and grow a deeper understanding of your family’s faith rooted in Jesus Christ.

Devotional: WHAT IS SIN?

Remember the first day of school when you were given a list of class rules? No chewing gum. Raise your hand before you speak. No talking while the teacher is talking. Many people see sin as simply breaking God’s list of rules. They look at the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Jesus and think they are doing pretty well.

But we have to define sin the way the Bible does – in relationship to God’s law and his perfect character. John writes that “sin is lawlessness” This goes to the root of all sinful actions and attitudes – our failure to trust God. Lawlessness is more than breaking the rules. It is living as though our own ideas are superior to God’s. At the heart of all sin is a lie that says to each of us, “What you are doing or thinking or feeling or wanting is not really that bad, because other people are doing things that are much worse. Beside, you can’t help it.

Sin isn’t just limited to our failure to live up to a list of dos and don’ts given to us by God. In fact, many people have been deceived into thinking that things are okay between them and God because they don’t do the things from the “don’t” list and they do at least a few things from the “do” list. But what they don’t realize is that this is just being moral or a good citizen or a nice person. It isn’t faith. And that means it won’t be enough to save them. Only Jesus can do that.

Scripture:

You can have a Bible close to the dinner table to use during devotions. The kids can take turns reading the scripture each week out of the Bible!

“The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me” John 16:9

Discussion Questions (pick a couple or all questions and allow for everyone to answer. There’s no answer key! As parents, we sometimes think we have to have all the answers, but we don’t. It’s ok to sometimes not have all the answers! But God does and it’s good to let our kids know when tough questions arise that some things only God knows, and we can’t always understand, but we can always trust Him )

1. What are some of the rules in your classroom or workplace or home? How hard is it to follow those rules?

2. How would you describe what sin is?

3. If everything that doesn’t come from faith is sin, does that mean it’s impossible to do good things and still be sinning? What makes it sin?

Little Bites from Heaven are excerpts taken from Dinner Table Devotions written by Nancy Guthrie
