OCS HOUSES

2019-2020

OCS HOUSES2019-2020

What are houses?

Houses is another term for school teams. Pre K through 6th grade students will be sorted into four different houses. The four different house names are: Karhu, Bunatate, Raposa, and Reveur. Each month, students will attend two house meetings. Although each house will have a different feel for their monthly house meetings, the goals will be the same: have fun, get creative, support each other with social/emotional health, and along the way do some problem solving! As the year continues, each house may develop additional house goals. In addition, each house MUST create a house cheer to perform at the end of the year!

Why are we moving to a house system?

We are a community school and there is no doubt that we are a team. In the same breath, we can do even better. By creating a house system, we will strengthen friendships and collaboration among our pre k-6th graders and the staff. Some words that are associated with house systems are: leadership, camaraderie, mentor, trust, loyalty, inclusion, belonging, communication, positivity, collegiality, participation, and success.

Tell me a little more about our houses!

Every OCS staff member belongs to a house. Karhu means bear. Bears are the loyal, leaders of the school! Ms. Scribner and Ms. Bolduc are members of the Karhu house. Below is a very brief description of our other houses.

Bunatate House

Bunatate means kindness! These ladies have BIG hearts!

Which house will my child join?

Every child has qualities and traits that match each of the houses, but on October 4th, each student will be randomly selected to join a house. It will be an opportunity to make new friends, share new ideas, collaborate with different students. Students will remain in their house for their tenure at OCS. We are extremely excited about the possibilities. Eventually, the house system will be part of our positive behavior system. Students will be encouraged to earn positive behavior points for their house, but that will come later in the school year. More information to follow!

What do the kids think?

So, we decided to ask the students what they think about the house system. Here are a few students thoughts.

I think it will be cool because it kind of reminds me of Harry Potter's school.
