Understanding Crisis Drills: A Guide for Parents and Guardians
September 10, 2026
Parents and Guardians,
Weston Public Schools is committed to maintaining safe, secure, and supportive learning environments for every student and staff member. An important part of this commitment is practicing emergency procedures throughout the school year.
These drills allow students and staff to become familiar with established procedures, practice remaining calm, and understand what actions may be required during different situations. During every drill, staff members focus on supervising students, maintaining accountability, and providing clear, age-appropriate direction.
To help families understand the terminology students may hear at school, Weston Public Schools uses five standard emergency response actions:
HOLD
Used when an issue inside the building requires hallways to remain clear, such as a medical emergency, altercation, or investigation. Students remain in their classrooms, doors are locked, attendance is taken, and instruction generally continues.
SECURE
Used when there is a potential concern or police activity outside the school. Everyone is brought inside, exterior doors are secured, attendance is taken, and normal activities may continue inside the building.
LOCKDOWN
Used when there is an immediate threat inside or very near the school. Students and staff secure themselves inside classrooms or other safe areas, lock doors, turn off lights, remain out of sight, and stay quiet until released by law enforcement or an official “All Clear.”
SHELTER
Used for an environmental or life-safety hazard, such as severe weather or a hazardous materials incident. Students and staff move to designated shelter areas or interior rooms, close doors and windows, take attendance, and remain there until an “All Clear” is announced.
EVACUATE
Used when students and staff must leave the building because of a fire, structural concern, or another unsafe condition. Everyone follows established evacuation routes, reports to a designated assembly area, and is accounted for by staff.
Talking With Your Child
We encourage parents and guardians to have calm, age-appropriate conversations with their children about school safety drills. You may wish to remind your child that:
- Drills are opportunities to practice.
- Teachers and school staff are there to guide and support them.
- Their responsibility is to remain calm, listen carefully, and follow directions.
- They should always share questions or concerns with a trusted adult.
Our goal is to prepare students without creating unnecessary fear. Clear communication, consistent terminology, and regular practice help students and staff respond confidently and appropriately.
Thank you for your continued trust and partnership as we work together to keep the Weston Public Schools community safe.
