The Great Gala - Donate - Sponsor - Volunteer
Please feel free to bring donations to drop off in the mornings. Heather is there to receive them Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We are also happy to pick up items.
Photographer Needed
This year all of the donated items will be made into auction packages and listed for bidding online. We need someone who knows how to take excellent photos to showcase the packages on our auction website, similar to having an online store. If you have the time, ability and skill, please contact Heather Black at hblack@thefranklin.academy.
Thank You!

The Reading Corner with Mrs. Samuel & Mrs. Snyder
Thank you to the parents who donated books and helped with book covering for the Robin Hall library! Book covering is an ongoing need, so please contact Mrs. Snyder if you would like to help!
Thank you to the parents who have donated gently used books from home and new books from Village Books for the Markell Hall library! Mrs. Samuel and all of her readers appreciate you so much!
Mrs. Snyder and Mrs. Samuel wanted to let you know what we have been reading! K-4 all had a lesson on proper book care and read the book Read It, Don’t Eat It! by Ian Schoenherr. Your student should be an expert book carer now!
Most classes also learned about social distancing by listening to us read Harold P. Spader, Personal Space Invader by Christianne Jones. What a silly book!
Mrs. Samuel has also shared the beautifully illustrated book The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry, and this week read the Japanese folktale The Beckoning Cat by Koko Nishizuka. See if you student will give you the beckoning wave!
As always, feel free to reach out to either one of us with questions or comments. Online learning students, let us know if you want to check out any books.
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Snyder

Managing Cold and Flu Season During the COVID-19 Pandemic
As we move further into Fall, cold and flu season begins to emerge. You may wake up one morning to a cough, stuffy or runny nose, and/or sore throat. How do we tell if the symptoms we are experiencing are a cold, flu, or COVID-19?
Differentiating Between Viruses
This years’ cold and flu season has a unique challenge. Differentiating between a common virus (like cold or flu) and the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Colds, flu, and COVID-19 are all caused by different viruses, but have similar symptoms. A comparison chart is embedded below.
IS IT COVID-19, THE FLU, A COLD, ALLERGIES OR ASTHMA?
Due to the similarities, it can be hard to tell the difference based on symptoms alone so your student’s health care provider may recommend testing for COVID-19.
Symptoms of COVID-19
People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported - ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:
Fever or chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
Returning to School After Having Suspected Signs of COVID-19
For ill persons without known exposure to a confirmed COVID-19 case that have one or more of the symptoms listed above, the criteria for returning to school include:
Negative COVID-19 test or Doctor’s note verifying illness is not COVID related; and
Improvement of symptoms*; and
Fever free for 72 hours (without fever reducing medication).
If unable to meet the criteria above, your child must stay home for a minimum of 10 days after symptom onset, as well as being fever free (72 hours) and having symptom improvement.
*Note: “Improvement of symptoms” does include meeting pre-COVID illness policies, such as waiting 24 hours to return to school after one's last episode of vomiting/diarrhea.
Testing Options
We require that anyone who has COVID-19 symptoms contact their health care provider. Your doctor will then recommend (based on their knowledge of your child’s health history) testing or not.
The Whatcom County Health Department is providing a free low-barrier COVID-19 Mobile Testing Program that is available 5 days a week (M/T/W/F/Sat) throughout Whatcom County. A doctor’s order is not required to be tested through the mobile program, and appointments can be scheduled online through Test Directly. Other locations that are providing COVID-19 testing are attached to this email.
During this time of year we may see an uptick in students feeling unwell. Whether it be common cold and flu viruses, or COVID-19, the interventions our school has put in place to prevent the spread of COVID are also beneficial in mitigating the spread of other viruses.
I want to thank everyone for doing their part to help keep our school healthy and safe.
Sincerely,
Teresa
