Hello MES Families! Happy New Year!

What a winter break this has become! Stay safe and warm I hope you all enjoyed time doing what makes special moments and memories last for you and your family.

This week will be a good reset for us all to get back into routines and spending time with our school family. The students will all participate in mid-year assemblies to remind us all of the core values at MES and how we represent them all around the building.

I hope you all stay warm and safe as this storm leaves behind some very cold temperatures. Please be sure your child(ren) are coming with warm coats and gloves to school - and labeled is better! Our lost and found is exploding!

Lastly, as we begin back in this new year, I ask that you prepare to get through our carline and have your child(ren) inside the building by 8:55. We have had a lot of late cars and with our walkers and bike riders becoming less in these winter months, the carline will increase. We will continue to open up for students at 8:40 to ensure all get ample time to arrive and come in the building. As always, if they ride the bus, they are never tardy (even if the bus is late). Thanks for doing your part to help students start their day on time and prepared.

I look forward to the second of half of the school year in 2025!

Take care,

Chandley

Story Trail Art Show Story Trail Art Show

Featuring 2nd Grade Art through January 11th

Where: Nelle V Hosbrook Audubon Trail, Miami Avenue, Madeira

When: December 23rd-January 11th

In collaboration with the City of Madeira and the Parks and Recreation Board of Madeira, the second graders have been working on tree art. After reading the book, Tree by Britta Teckentrup, the students chose a season and designed their own tree collage.

The first batch of tree art will be on display December 23, 2024 - January 11, 2025. The next batch of art will go on display towards the end of March, which will be communicated as the date draws near. All 2nd graders will have an opportunity this year to have their work on display at some point throughout the school year.

The Madeira Storytrail was created in 2023 through a grant received to the City of Madeira and the Parks and Recreation Board of Madeira. The trail offers books on display in partnership with the Cincinnati Hamilton County Public Library. This will be the first public display of art on the Storytrail.

I hope you get a chance to stop by and enjoy a winter walk along the trail to see the artwork and the beauty of the trail.

Nurse Amy Notes Nurse Amy Notes

The winter months are here!

Germs and Lice can often visit when we're cozied up inside visiting with friends and family.

The best way to avoid spreading too much joy and cheer is...

Washing your hands! This is the most crucial step; wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before preparing food, eating, and after using the bathroom.

Make sure you keep your distance if you are feeling ill, especially when hugging family members who have a decreased immune system. (Like new babies and the elderly)

Humans are particularly vulnerable to lice this holiday season for one very specific reason. We’ve forgotten about them! Years of social distancing have put lice in the back of our minds and Holidays 2024, they are making their way back! First, let’s talk about the good news, having lice isn’t a serious medical condition, just a pest! To reduce your family's chances of getting lice this holiday and the rest of the year...

  • Limit head-to-head contact during friend or cousin sleepovers.

  • When socializing in a crowd, long hair should be tied back into ponytails, buns, and braids to make it more difficult for lice to invade.

  • Never share hats, coats, scarves, earmuffs or gloves.

  • Just looking at your student's scalp is not a sure way to find these little Grinches; especially if your student has sandy/blonde hair. The best way to check is with a lice comb. These are available on Amazon or with treatment shampoo at your local pharmacy.

* This dry air has many students suffering from chapped lips! Feel free to send your child in with a chapstick to keep in their pencil cases!

* Even though it is still very cold out. Please continue to have your student bring a water bottle to school to stay hydrated!

* Hats! Please remind your student not to share hats at school, to prevent the spread of lice! Wearing long hair up in a ponytail or braid is also a great way to slow the spread.

* Still many injuries happening on the playground from tripping in Crocs. Although comfy and popular, Crocs (and any clog like shoe) don't make for great school or PE shoes.

Stay warm and healthy this winter season!

WOW! MES Staff Shouts WOW! MES Staff Shouts

New year, new opportunity to recognize a staff member!

We are so grateful for our awesome families at MES! And we know many of you have that same feeling about our MES staff and all that they do to support your child(ren) every day. Please use this form to submit a note, a celebration, or just some uplifting words to a staff member here at MES. We'd love to hear about those special moments and can't wait to share your message with that team member! Thank you!

A Note from the Madeira Library A Note from the Madeira Library

Hello,

The Madeira Library is starting an initiative for the coming year where we feature photos of Madeira community members (police officers, firefighters, teachers, etc.) posing for photos/selfies with their favorite children's books! We'd love to invite you both and all the teachers from the Madeira Middle School to send in photos. Our goal is to use our library collection to connect readers with all the wonderful people in our community!

If you don't have a copy of your favorite children's book, we are happy to bring them to you! And if any teachers don't want to be photographed, we'd still love to share their name and position and feature their favorite books if they're willing.

We're very excited to showcase all your favorite books! We would love to share this info and our contacts with your fellow educator. Please pass this along to anyone you think would be interested, and don't hesitate to reach out with questions!

Thank you so much!
