Welcome to our second edition of the Classroom Connections New Teacher Project Newsletter!

Welcome to the Lansing School District for those teachers just starting this week! We're thrilled to have you join our team. We understand that these first few days have been a whirlwind of meeting new students, connecting with colleagues, preparing your classroom, and introducing yourself to parents.

The energy you've brought to your classrooms is evident, and your dedication to building strong relationships with your students is an investment that will pay dividends all through the year. These relationships lay the foundation for both academic and social growth. Keep nurturing that trust and connection because it truly makes a difference.

Remember that our district is a community: Don’t hesitate to lean on your colleagues for support and guidance—they are a fantastic resource for advice, collaboration, and listening. For our parents, we encourage you to continue fostering those initial connections. These partnerships are essential to our students' success, and your efforts to engage with families are deeply appreciated.

Here’s to a fantastic school year ahead—and once again, welcome to the Lansing School District family!

Classroom Jobs & Responsibilities

Classroom jobs effectively cultivate a positive classroom environment by giving students a sense of responsibility and ownership. They help the classroom run smoothly and teach students responsibility and teamwork. Students learn valuable life skills and develop social and emotional learning (SEL) through these roles. Classroom jobs can significantly enhance the learning environment by providing students with opportunities to build a variety of skills and attributes, including:

Accountability & Responsibility: Students learn to complete tasks independently, fostering a sense of ownership over their contributions.

Teamwork: Students learn to collaborate and share responsibilities to maintain a functional classroom environment

Leadership: Some roles, such as "line leader," allow students to practice leadership skills.

Student Voice & Choice: Allowing students to express preferences for specific roles empowers them and fosters a sense of ownership over their learning experience.

Positive Learning Environment: Classroom jobs contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel valued and see the impact of their contributions.

Positive Impacts:

Skill Development: Classroom jobs help students develop practical leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Increased Engagement: Students given jobs become more engaged in the classroom environment.

Sense of Belonging: A specific role within the classroom can help students feel valued and recognized, contributing to a greater sense of belonging and community.

Behavioral Benefits: Assigning jobs can positively affect student behavior.

Empowerment and Autonomy: Giving students jobs empowers them by giving them a sense of autonomy and control over their environment.

Tips & Tricks:

Co-create a list of jobs with input from students. Discuss with students what tasks they think are essential for the smooth running of the classroom.

Teach job expectations: Teach students what each job entails and model how to perform the tasks.

Create a job chart: Design a visual job chart that allows students to choose their job.

Rotate the jobs regularly to ensure every student has a chance to participate.

By integrating classroom jobs into the daily routine, teachers can create a more dynamic, inclusive, and supportive learning atmosphere that benefits all students.
