Updates From The Principal
Hello NRMS Families,
As we reach the end of our first five-day week at school, I am pleased to report how well our first two weeks have gone at NRMS. There is such a positive energy in the school.
One indicator of students taking seriously our charge to them to take on more ownership of their learning is the iReady assessments we use to monitor student progress in reading and math. Earlier this week, students took the Reading diagnostic assessment in iReady. We are alerted if a student rushes through the assessment, which is taken online. We had fewer than 5 students in the entire student body flagged for rushing through the assessment. We utilize this data to help put in place additional supports for students who are falling behind grade level expectations as measured by the iReady system. Kudos to our scholars for taking their education and these assessments seriously.
One tool you at home can use to help students stay on track with their school work is the "Week-At-A-Glance" documents that will be linked in this newsletter each week. This is your one-stop destination to get a preview of upcoming projects and assignments in each of your child's courses.
Yesterday morning, we gathered on the front lawn of the school and paused our normal school day to honor the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. We were joined by first responders from Orleans and Town officials, as we honored the memory of lives lost and commit to being a positive, united community.
Next week, we invite all parents and guardians of middle school students to attend the NRMS Open House on Thursday, September 18 at 5pm. There is a meeting with the music department prior to the Open House at 4:30pm. I look forward to taking the stage in our Auditorium promptly at 5pm to welcome everyone and begin our presentation. You will then follow your child's Monday schedule. More information can be found here. This is not a student event. We hope to see all parents/guardians Thursday evening. Please consider carpooling, as parking will be a challenge if everyone takes their own car. Thank you.
Members of our new student ambassadors, The Crew, will be on hand that evening to help you navigate the school. We are still seeking some 8th grade students to join the Crew. We have about 25 7th and 8th graders currently on the Crew and we would like to have about 18-20 in each grade, 7 and 8. Students that are interested in this leadership role can contact me directly.
The PTO held their first meeting this week. We encourage more parents/guardians to join the PTO or sign up to assist with PTO sponsored events and fundraisers this year. Additionally, the NRMS Education Foundation is back. The first fundraiser for the Foundation will take place on Saturday October 4 at Friend Market, here in Orleans. 11% of proceeds from that day will go to the NRMS Education Foundation and help to offset the cost of field trips and support other opportunities for our middle school students and staff. More information in next week's newsletter and at open House.
Enjoy the weekend and I look forward to seeing many of you next week at open House on Thursday September 18 at 5pm in our auditorium.
