Principal Points

Dear Roosevelt Families,

If you’ve lived in Michigan for any length of time, you know this time of year can feel like a bit of a weather mystery. One day we are bundling up in winter coats, and the next day students are asking if it’s warm enough for spring jackets! It seems Mother Nature can’t quite decide—is it winter or is it spring?

Even though the weather may be unpredictable, one thing at Roosevelt is very consistent: our students continue to grow every single day. Just like the seasons slowly transition, we are seeing students blossom academically and socially as the year moves forward.

Classrooms across the building are filled with meaningful learning, thoughtful conversations, and students working hard to stretch their thinking. This time of year is especially exciting because students begin to realize just how much they have learned since the fall. Their confidence grows, their independence increases, and their curiosity continues to shine.

We also continue to celebrate students who demonstrate our Roosevelt expectations to Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. Students love earning Pawsome Tickets when they show these behaviors, and it has been wonderful to see so many Tigers recognized for making positive choices and helping create a welcoming school community.

As the weather continues to change (sometimes daily!), please remember that layers are your best friend this time of year. Recess takes place outside whenever possible, and students enjoy getting fresh air and movement during the school day.

No matter what the forecast says, Roosevelt is full of warm smiles, hard work, and proud Tigers who continue to make us proud.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Warmly,
Mrs. Samouelian

Michigan Department of Education Wants to Recognize Teachers!

National Teacher Appreciation Week is May 4-8, 2026. The Michigan Department of Education’s (MDE) Office of Educator Excellence wishes to celebrate teachers across Michigan for the entire month of May.

MDE invites parents/guardians to submit 15-30 second videos of their students recognizing and thanking a specific teacher for their impact. Cell phones easily capture the videos. Please follow the directions on the flyer. Videos and parental consent must be submitted via the Teacher Appreciation Video Project Google Form. Videos are currently being accepted until April 15, 2026.

Submitted videos may be posted on the Teacher Appreciation Month webpage and MDE’s YouTube channel. Additionally, the Office of Educator Excellence’s Facebook (@MIeducator) and X (formerly Twitter) will promote the videos throughout the month of May.

Tigers on the Run

Tigers on the Run is back and we are ready to get moving!

To kick things off, we will be celebrating with a special St. Patrick’s Day Run on Friday, March 20! Any student who completes 2 laps will earn a special charm to add to their collection!

Volunteers Needed

To help make this event and future runs run smoothly, we are looking for parent volunteers to help scan student badges during the run. Your help makes this program possible, and we truly appreciate your support!

Tigers on the Run will take place from March 20 through May 15. Students will be working hard to earn laps as we build up to our exciting Bubble Run celebration on May 20 in the afternoon! More information about the Bubble Run will be shared at a later date.

If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up using the link below. We would love to have you join us!

"The Empty Pot" - Demi

Why it’s powerful:
Ping is the only child honest enough to admit his seed didn’t grow. While everyone else brings beautiful plants, Ping brings an empty pot—and the emperor rewards his honesty.

Integrity message:
Doing the right thing matters more than appearing successful.

Great question for kids:
“Why do you think Ping told the truth even when it was hard?”

"Ruthie and the (Not So) Teeny Tiny Lie" – Laura Rankin

Why it’s great for younger students:
Ruthie finds a toy and tells a small lie about it being hers. The guilt she feels helps children understand how honesty connects to integrity.

Integrity message:
Telling the truth helps us feel better and builds trust.

Family discussion:
“Have you ever told a tiny lie that didn’t feel good inside?”

What If Everybody Did That? – Ellen Javernick

Why it’s helpful:
This book shows how small choices affect others—like littering, cheating, or not following rules.

Integrity message:
Our choices impact the community around us.

Family question:
“What would happen if everyone made that choice?”

Care Solace is a service that partners with LPS to help students, families, and staff quickly connect with mental health and wellness providers. Through Care Solace, individuals receive confidential support in finding local counselors, therapists, substance use treatment programs, and other behavioral health services that meet their specific needs, insurance, and preferences. The service is available 24/7 and is designed to remove barriers to care by helping families navigate the often complicated process of finding the right support, ensuring that everyone in the school community has access to the help they may need.
