17th Week of School (3 weeks left in Quarter 2)
2024 ReFOCUS
I hope that 2024 is starting well for all EOY families. Reflecting on our progress during the first part of this school year, many students are making academic progress in learning the NC curriculum. However, we ALL must be laser-focused in 2024 to help EACH student learn and master the rigorous NC curriculum standards. Below are examples of our ReFOCUS goals EO Young.
- Bell-to-Bell learning
- Intentional, efficient, and effective lessons
- Monitoring learning throughout lessons and monitoring mastery of curriculum knowledge & skills throughout units of study
- Building strong classroom community through Morning Meetings
Families can play a huge role in supporting your child's academic success by:
- Making sure that you students attend school each day and arrive by 7:45 am so that they can get breakfast, settle in, and participate in school-wide Morning Meetings.
- Having set routines at home for completing at-home assignments, reviewing notes, limiting evening use of electronics, and ensuring students have a reasonable bedtime.
- Collaborating with your child's teacher when your student is absent to get learning materials and to make up missing work.
As part of our laser-focused learning in 2024, cell phones may not be used during the instructional day or on the bus. Students who must bring cell phones to school will be required to either:
- Leave them off and in their backpacks or
- Turn them into the front office
Another ReFOCUS area is on ensuring that our bus riders can get to and from school safely. Riding a school bus is a privilege and students MUST follow all VCS expectations for school buses. Students who do not follow these expectations may lose their privilege to ride the school bus.
- Students may only be picked up and dropped off at their assigned stop. Any changes MUST be in writing AND approved by Principal Batten or the transportation department in advance
- Bus riders must follow the VCS student code of conduct
- Cell phones or laptops may NOT be used on the bus and should be off and in the student's backpack
- No food or drinks may be consumed
- Stay seated and out of the aisle during the bus ride
- Sit in the assigned seat and/or the seat that the driver indicates
- Follow the driver's directions
Let's have an amazing week focusing on academics and PAWsitive behaviors.

Community Read Aloud at Perry Memorial Library
New program on Mondays from 5:30pm-6:15pm, starting January 22nd. It is called "Community Read Aloud" and the idea is that youth will have a chance to read to a volunteer with the National Honor Society Students from the Vance County Early College High School. There is no registration required but folks can let me know they are coming by emailing mpeters@perrylibrary.org. We are hoping to foster the love of reading and support an encouraging environment for learning and reading out loud as everyone gets a chance to listen to themselves and others read.
Upcoming free and cheap events for kids!
Find plenty of free and cheap things for kids to do in Raleigh, Durham Chapel Hill and beyond, on this list. Events for all age kids are included, from toddlers to teens, so make sure to follow the links to learn more about each event.
