Author Visit: Magic, Curiosity, and Beyond the Pond

What happens when a simple moment of curiosity turns into a published book? Our Year 0/1 tamariki found out this week when we had a very special visitor at Willow Park!

We were so lucky to welcome Jamie-Lee Hall, an ECE teacher and author of the new childrenโ€™s book Beyond the Pond, beautifully illustrated by Laura Bee. Jamie-Lee came in to read her story to our junior students, who were completely captivated. They had some brilliant questions about her characters, the illustrations, and the book-making process.

Jamie-Lee shared how a brief encounter with a grasshopper at her ECE centre sparked the idea for the book. She took the children through her journey of writing, collaborating with an illustrator, and publishing. It was incredibly inspiring for our students to see how an everyday moment can become a creative masterpiece.

At its heart, Beyond the Pond is a story about bravery, embracing who you are, and having the courage to take the next step. It sparked some wonderful discussions about trying new things and facing our fears.

We absolutely loved having Jamie-Lee with us and hope itโ€™s the first of many stories she shares with Willow Park! โœจ

Want to read it at home? If youโ€™d like to learn more about Beyond the Pond or grab a copy for your family's bookshelf, you can visit Jamie-Leeโ€™s website here: HERE .

Blast Off! Captain Custard is Coming to School This Wednesday ๐Ÿš€

Get ready for a cosmic adventure! This Wednesday, we are incredibly lucky to welcome New Zealand animator and illustrator Richard Stevens to share his brilliant new sci-fi comic book, Captain Custard, with some of our students.

Richard will be talking to the children about how he created the comic, what it takes to be a motion designer, and the thrilling story of Captain Custard battling the mysterious "Hyper Droids."

Get your signed copy! Parents can purchase the debut 36-page, full-colour comic book for their children to enjoy at home:

  • Pre-order for a signed copy: go to https://captaincustard.com, order as many copies as you want and use the discount code WILLOWPARK to remove the postage cost. You can then pick up your copy from Richard.

  • Buy on the day: Copies will also be available to purchase on Wednesday for $15.00.

We are so excited to inspire our young artists and readers with this fantastic visit! What an awesome start to our Read-a-thon launch!

On Thursday the whole school took part in the National Shakeout. Children and staff performed the earthquake drill, and then evacuated to the netball courts. We were really impressed with the children's attitudes and safety during the drill. The exercise was a real success!

New Zealand's general election is on Saturday 7 November. This year, you must be enrolled by midnight on Sunday 25 October to vote. Unlike previous elections, you can't enrol on election day. If you've moved house recently, check that your address is up to date too.

Got older teenagers (18+)? If you have rangatahi who have recently turned 18 or will turn 18 before election day, make sure to check if they are enrolled so they can vote in their first election!

How to enrol or check your details: Enrolling is quick and easy online at vote.nz using a photo ID (NZ driverโ€™s licence, NZ passport, or RealMe ID). Need help? Call 0800 36 76 56.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Am I eligible to vote? If you are 18 or older, currently live in NZ, have lived here for at least one year continuously at some point, and are a NZ citizen or permanent resident, YES, youโ€™re eligible!

  • Are you trying to tell me who to vote for? Not at all! This is strictly non-partisan. Who you vote for is entirely your choice โ€“ all that matters is that your voice and your familyโ€™s voice are heard.

  • Why should I vote if I don't care about politics? Decisions made by the government directly impact our schools, healthcare, local environment, and power bills. By voting, you help shape a future that supports your kids, whฤnau, and community.

  • Where can I find neutral information on candidates/parties? Independent outlets like RNZ offer non-partisan guides on party policies, or you can check out Policy NZโ€™s website where you can select the topics you care about and see where parties stand.

Enrol to vote today and help guide Aotearoa into a great future!
