The Families Matter Conference Keynote Speakers: The Avery and Brian Experience!
The Avery and Brian Experience was created in 2018 as a way to help families focus on developing healthy relationships. What started as a conversation over dinner about helping our local community has led Avery and Brian to speak in front of more than 40,000 people and counting. As dynamic motivational speakers with a passion for building positive relationships, helping others build and cultivate those relationships is an essential part of their journey. As a father and son who are also business partners, they believe in prosperity in business and success in life. Both of those goals are directly affected by how people manage their relationships. Before Avery and Brian started helping people have conversations that matter, they had their own obstacles to overcome as father and son. Their story is an example that no matter what happens in your relationship, it can be improved. If you’re willing to examine yourself, be adaptable to change, and maintain a positive outlook, things can always, always get better!
Join us for the Avery and Brian Experience at the fall Families Matter Conference on Saturday, October 19 at 8:30 am at Arden Middle School! Register for free at www.sanjuan.edu/familyed.
THE FIRST 100 CONFERENCE ATTENDEES will receive Brian and Avery's bestselling book "Love Wins: 5 Keys to Strengthening Your Relationships."

Educator Resource of the Month: California Department of Education's Safe and Supportive Schools Newsletter
Each month, the California Safe and Supportive Schools Newsletter delivers to your inbox the latest research, resources, policies, and practices related to school climate, safety, and well-being. This monthly newsletter is developed by WestEd in collaboration with the California Department of Education. Its purpose is to disseminate current information on school climate practices, policies, and resources to empower schools on improving school safety, conditions for learning, and pupil engagement and well-being. It includes up-to-date information on California's School Climate, Health, and Learning Survey (CalSCHLS) System.
Some of the many resources in the newsletter this month:

Video recordings, slides, and handouts for each session are available on the REL website.

October is Global Diversity Awareness Month!
This month is dedicated to celebrating and increasing awareness about the diverse cultures and populations that make up the world. It encourages individuals and organizations to learn about different cultures, as well as to promote inclusion and understanding across various cultural contexts. The celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the positive impact of diversity on society and to challenge and address issues of inclusion within communities and organizations.
Below are some important awareness campaigns that are celebrated in the month of October:
National Hispanic Heritage Month- September 15-October 15: While we celebrate Hispanic and Latino communities beyond this month, from September 15 to October 15 we give extra recognition to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States, including important advocacy work, vibrant art, popular and traditional foods, and much more. Hispanic Heritage Month provides an additional opportunity to explore the incredible impact Latinas and Latinos have had on the United States for generations. You can learn more about some ways to celebrate this month, by visiting the websites below:
https://hispanicheritagemonth.gov/
Polish American Heritage Month: The first Poles migrated to America starting in the early 1800s. This month, celebrate their contributions to culture and society. Once here, they were dedicated to preserving their heritage and culture and even started a national network of Polish-language newspapers, radio, and television stations to keep their language alive. New York State has the largest Polish-American population with Michigan, Wisconsin, and Connecticut having a substantial group too. https://genealogytour.com/polish-heritage-month/
Italian American Heritage Month: Nearly 16 million Americans identify as Italian American according to the U.S. Census. Italian American Heritage Month occurs every October to overlap with Columbus Day, celebrated on the second Monday. It was first celebrated in 1989 with a proclamation from George H.W. Bush. Every year, a Columbus Day parade is held in New York City with an average million spectators. https://www.osdia.org/commission-for-social-justice/italian-heritage-month/
Filipino American History Month: Filipino American History Month is celebrated as it was when the first Filipinos arrived in California in 1587. Many organizations in California and Hawaii, where many Filipino Americans reside, hold annual celebrations. Some call the month “Filipino American Heritage Month” while others regard it as a History month to focus on the events and lived experiences and their impact on society. http://fanhs-national.org/filam/about/. In honor of Filipino American History month, check out this guide to teaching Filipinx history created by San Francisco Public Schools.
Down Syndrome Awareness Month: Each year, nearly 6,000 babies born in the United States are diagnosed with Down Syndrome, or 1 in every 700 babies. October focuses on the acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome. Learn about their unique strengths and promote a society and workplace that values diversity and offers support to those living with Down Syndrome and their families. https://ndss.org/down-syndrome-awareness-month

Introducing Our New Regional Community Care Hubs!
Our FACE team is excited to announce our newest outreach beginning in October-- Community Care Hubs! A Community Care Hub is a regional pop-up community resource fair organized across various schools and locations within our school district. These events are designed to bring essential resources and support services directly to our families and students, making it easier for them to access the help they need in a convenient and welcoming environment. At each Community Care Hub event, local district departments and community partners are invited to host information tables where they can share valuable information and offer resources to attendees. These events provide an excellent opportunity for departments and organizations to engage directly with the community, build relationships, and raise awareness about services and programs they offer. Whether it’s exploring resources, learning valuable information to support student success, offering tangible goods, providing referrals to social support services, or offering other vital supports, the goal of the event is to help address the important needs of our diverse community.
We invite you to be a part of this effort to engage and support our community! The upcoming Community Care Hubs will take place in October on the following dates:
October 3rd, 3-5:30 pm, Starr King K-8 School (4848 Cottage Way. Carmichael)

Partnership Connection
On September 20th, FACE hosted over 40 individuals representing their community organizations at our bi-monthly Partnership Connection series. This series is an opportunity for our community partners to come together, deepen knowledge about each other’s organization, learn more about our district and our initiatives, and collaborate on ways to strategically work together to support our students, families and community. This year, our Partnership Connection will be working together to establish metrics to help support partnership effectiveness. We are grateful for our strong relationships with our educational partners who do so much to support our San Juan Unified community!

Problem Resolution Tip of the Month: Explore Ways to Resolve Concerns at the School Site
When it comes to Problem Resolution, our goal is to assist families and community members with learning how to navigate appropriate channels and processes in order to resolve concerns at the lowest possible level. Establishing open communication with parents and providing them accessible ways to reach a staff member or administrator when they have a concern is a great way to build trust and strengthen the relationship between home and school. Visit our website for more information: www.sanjuan.edu/resources/resolving-problems

Shout Out to Orangevale Open K-8's Student Council Supply Drive for FACE Mobile!
The Orangevale Open Student Council organized a school supply drive to help support students in need all across our district. Students collected backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, and a variety of other important school necessities. The students got to stock the FACE Mobile with their donations, which will now be given to students at FACE Mobile visits all around San Juan Unified. Thank you for your generosity and kindness, Orangevale Open Bobcats!
