Business Showmanship
This year for Family Fun Night we are hosting a Business Showmanship competition. The species this year is SWINE. We would like 4-H members who are taking this project to invite a Business professional to show their animal against other local business professionals. It will take place on Wednesday, July 22nd starting at 7 pm. This is a great opportunity for youth to meet and interact with local businesses. The 4-H Council has compiled a list of potential business professionals to ask, please contact the Extension Office for some of the names. Also please let the office know if you are planning to have someone show your project animal. See the form below.
Buyer Outreach
New this year to help ensure buyers are informed of the change in the fair sale, 4-H members will be gathering on July 14th at 9 am to split into groups and visit businesses inviting them to the Fair sale. Members near Hay Springs will meet at Lister Sage at 9 am, Rushville members will meet at the Extension Office at 9 am, and Gordon members will meet at the City Park at 9 am.

YQCA Trainings for 2026
Nebraska 4-H requires all youth enrolled in livestock projects to complete annual quality assurance training through Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA).
Youth enrolled in any of following projects or project areas will need to complete YQCA training;
• Beef (bucket calf, feeder calf, breeding beef, market beef)
• Dairy Cattle
• Goat (breeding meat goat, dairy goat, meat goat)
• Poultry
• Rabbit
• Sheep (breeding sheep, market sheep)
• Swine (breeding swine, market swine)
There are 3 ways to complete this certification:
- Web-Based Training - Web-based annual training is available through the YQCA learning management system. The online YQCA course costs $12 per individual regardless of age. Each session purchased includes three modules - a knowledge builder, a skills lab, and a quiz. The knowledge builder is where content is delivered. The skills lab provides an opportunity to apply the content. The quiz test knowledge. To receive certification, 80% must be achieved on the 10-question quiz. These modules, completed in their entirety, will provide 2-3 hours of experience.
- In-Person Training - In-person YQCA training courses cost $3 per individual regardless of age.
- Testing Out - Test-out options are only available to youth in the first year of Intermediate (age 12) and Senior (age 15) age levels. There is no test-out option for Juniors.
Please visit: https://yqcaprogram.org/ for more information, get registered and pay fees for the in-person course, or take the online course.
Deadline to complete YQCA is June 15th! YQCA Certificates need to be sent to mmracek2@unl.edu or returned to the office.

Nebraska State Fair Livestock Information
It is time to be thinking of State Fair Livestock requirements!
All livestock in contention to exhibit at the Nebraska State Fair will be required to complete an online nomination with payment through Show Stock Manager and submit a DNA collector envelope with a hair sample. For NE State Fair DNA instructions and envelopes, please stop by the Extension Office. This includes all 4-H and FFA breeding livestock, market livestock, and feeder calves.
Show Stock Manager is open for livestock nominations for the 2026 Nebraska State Fair! Website Link: https://showstockmgr.com/ Each State Fair nomination will be $7.00 per animal in Show Stock Manager. Submit the DNA payment and complete the online nomination in Show Stock Manager. 4-H and FFA livestock nominations are due on June 15, 2026.
Turn in your completed DNA envelopes to the local Extension Office or FFA Advisor by June 15, 2026.
State Fair Entry Closes August 8, 2026
AKSARBEN Special Note
For 4-H/FFA families who are planning on entering the Aksarben Stock Show, you will need separate DNA envelopes and online nominations- exhibitors will be ordering and purchasing their DNA envelopes through the AKSS website https://aksarbenstockshow.com/ The Aksarben Stock Nomination online nomination system will be different than Show Stock Manager and separate between each livestock show.
Please direct any AKSS questions to the AKSS website.
Crop Scouting
Looking for a fun club project? Want to unite your club members? Running out of ideas for club meetings? If you answered, “yes” to any of these questions, help is on the way! Nebraska Extension is pleased to present the 11th annual Crop Scouting Competition for Nebraska youth. Youth interested in crops can learn about crop growth & development and basic crop scouting principles.
Don’t know a lot about crops? Ask a local agronomist to assist by providing a short lesson on crop production. You can have the agronomist meet with youth a little during each meeting or outside of the meeting. This is one way to engage those youth interested in crops.
This contest will be held at the Eastern Nebraska Research & Extension Center near Mead, Nebraska on August 6, 2026. The event will include both indoor and outdoor events. Teams of junior high and high school students (those completing 5-12th grades) from across Nebraska are invited to participate. This event is limited to the first ten teams who sign-up!
Clubs or other organizations may enter a team composed of three to five participants. An adult team leader must accompany each team of students. Team leaders could be FFA advisors, crop consultants, extension staff, coop employees, etc.
Top-scoring teams win prizes: $500 for first, $250 for second, $100 for third place. Top two teams will be eligible for regional competition held in Nebraska this year.
Teams will be expected to know the basics of scouting corn and soybean fields. This includes crop staging; looking for patterns of crop injury; disease, insect and weed seedling identification; etc. Other topics many include but are not limited to, pesticide safety, nutrient disorders, and herbicide injury.
More information about the crop scouting competition and instructions on how to register a team are available online at cropwatch.unl.edu/youth. Register at: https://go.unl.edu/cropscoutingreg
Teams must be registered by July 15.
