Superintendent's Community Update
February 1, 2023
A Message from Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:
Happy February! Our second academic semester begins this Thursday. That means we are in the midst of key learning time for all of our students. Please make sure that your child is attending school every day, is engaged, and is getting the support they need if they are encountering any challenges. As I’ve said many times, our teachers, guidance counselors, and principals all want to hear from and work with you to make sure your child has what he/she needs to thrive. Parent involvement and input with your child or with his/her teachers has such a huge impact on a child’s success. It is a team effort!
This focus on the basics and improving educational outcomes for all of our students is the topic of a special Newport School Committee workshop being held on February 7th at 5:30pm at Pell Elementary School. The workshop will review recent student assessment results, provide updates on our school facilities projects, and review the details of the proposed FY 2024 school budget. The purpose of this workshop is to share with everyone where we are as a district and how each initiative and work we do is all connected to support our students, staff, and school district. Now is the time for the district to reassess and create a new strategic plan on moving forward. In the coming weeks, we will share what a RHS “portrait of a graduate” looks like and how at each of our school levels that works helps to set the foundation for our students. RHS has been focusing on this work for the past years, and Pell and TMS will soon be looking at this from what a portrait of a student looks like from each of their levels.
This is the first of many meetings to listen and learn about our schools. I encourage everyone to attend or watch the presentation, which will be live streamed. We are asking PTO and SIT members to attend, and please email suggestions prior to or after the workshop. If you do have any questions or suggestions before or after listening/attending the meeting please feel free to email Ms. Cathy Nash at cathynash@npsri.net. This is just the beginning of a process to build an ambitious educational plan with goals that will guide the work for all of us in the coming years.
Let’s come together as One Newport to focus on how we can improve achievement for all of our students!
Have a great week of learning everyone!
Sincerely,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.

Cathy Nash a cathynash@npsri.net.
Atentamente,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.

Rogers Gym Clarification & School Building Committee Meeting February 6th
There has been some confusion about the status of the Rogers High School gym and whether it will be incorporated or not into the new high school’s final design. The new high school project has been delayed due to budget challenges and the redesign work that must be done to reduce the building’s size, eliminating automotive and cosmetology/small business, as well as the track and field. This redesign will allow the existing gym to stay up longer, allowing our students access and use of it. For a variety of reasons, some thought that there was a possibility of keeping the gym permanently going forward, but as our facilities consultant has explained, this is unfortunately not possible.
We understand and appreciate the passion of community members wanting to keep the gym facility. But we need to focus all of that passion and energy into helping us tackle our budget challenges so we are able to restore the two programs – automotive and cosmetology – back into the new high school and build the brand new track and field that our student athletes, families, and community members deserve.
This and other facilities issues will be discussed at the School Building Committee’s next public meeting on February 6th at 5:30pm at Pell Elementary.

February Is also Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month
Newport Public Schools is proud to be home to one of the best Career and Technical Education programs in the state. During February CTE month, we’re celebrating that success and the incredible diversity of CTE pathways available to our students.
As a reminder to our Grade 7 and 8 students and their parents, NOW is the time to be making decisions about schedules for next school year. Math and CTE class selections are now being collected at TMS, Rogers High School and NACTC.
I encourage all of our students to view our many exciting CTE class and pathway options and to sign up early. These programs, many that include taking high level AP classes and graduating with an industry certificate, are becoming very popular. Students should reach out to their guidance counselor with any questions. Applications are due back March 1, 2023, and we are encouraging students and families to apply as soon as possible, as next year’s classes are already filling up.
REMINDER: After School Math Tutoring Available at Thompson Middle School
If your TMS student is struggling with math classes, or just needs some more practice with math concepts, TMS is offering free after school tutoring classes. This is a great resource to get our students on track and learn key math concepts that serve as the foundation for more advanced math learning in high school. Contact TMS Principal Xavier Barrios (xavierbarrios@npsri.net) to learn more and enroll.
REMINDER: Focus Groups With Recent Rogers High Graduates
To better understand what our school district is doing right, where we can improve, and what new resources we should make available, we are conducting a series of focus groups with recent Rogers High School graduates. Feedback from these focus groups will be critical as we work together collaboratively on our plan to raise student achievement for all of our students. If you are a recent Rogers grad, or know someone who is and might be interested to participate, please contact Aida LeVasseur at aidalevasseur@npsri.net.
Calendar Check
The month of February is a very short month with lots of important events, celebrations as already noted, and activities. A new semester is underway, winter sports are in full swing, and securing course selections for next year’s freshman class continues to be a work in progress. The school budget will be front and center as we try to address the challenges of funding cuts from the state, giving the state time to adjust and finalize its numbers, as well as increasing staffing requests to support our teaching and learning needs. The school department will also request a meeting with the City Council to update them on our budget requests seeking to work together on securing funding for the new school year. February break begins on February 20 with classes resuming on February 27th. So please stay tuned as the month moves forward. We will try our best to keep you updated and informed.
School Building Projects: (New RHS and Pell Building Addition)

Snow Alert Reminder
Please remember if there are any delays or cancellations for school our school department will do its best to alert you as early as possible. We strongly encourage everyone to sign up for the RIBAS alert system. We will always make every effort to keep our schools open with delays if needed. Otherwise if we have heavy snow we will have a good old fashioned snow day. As a reminder if school is canceled due to snow, the school district will have to add another day at the end of our calendar per RIDE requirements. So let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope for a mild winter.
