Bednarcik Bulldog Blast

MAY 18, 2023

BednarcikBulldog BlastMAY 18, 2023

From the Principal

We have one week left in our year - a great year together! As I reflect on the year, I am in awe of the work we have done together since August. We have spent so much time growing as a school community. We have grown as readers, as thinkers, and as people. Through all we have done, we have come together to learn what makes us different from each other and also what connects us as a school and as people.

As the year comes to a close, I encourage all of us to spend time thinking and reflecting on the last 9 months. It is amazing the growth that can happen in such a short time!

LIBRARY FINES...1/2 price!

Library fines are half price and need to be paid before attending the Bulldog Bash. Unfortunately, if your student owes for a lost/damaged book or headphones those items remain at full price because the LRC will need to purchase those items again. All fine money goes straight back to the students in the form of material for the Maker Space and the purchase of new books. Thank you for helping us recover our school's materials and for holding our students responsible for due dates, a real world experience.

Parents, please read!

Students were reminded of the following Bulldog expectations as we end the school year:

1. Be on time to all classes

2. Be positive and respectful to fellow students and staff

3. Keep hands and feet to yourself

4. Keep cell phones away during the school day and anytime in the no tolerance zones (locker rooms and bathrooms)

Any student that has a detention must have it served by Tuesday May 23rd. Any detentions not served or issued after that time will be served during the Bulldog Bash. Email reminders are sent in advance of a scheduled detention to the parent and student. Please offer support from home for your student to end the year on a positive note!

Encourage your students to do the right thing, be positive, and own their responsibility through the last day of school!

IMPORTANT BULLDOG BASH INFO FOR PARENTS

If your student is leaving early on the day of the Bulldog Bash, send a note with the time they are supposed to meet you in the front office. Have them bring the pass to Mrs. K that morning so she can give them a pass to be in the office. You must come into the front office to sign your student out of school.

311 PROJECT - FREE TUTORING

The 311 Project, who is now a part of the non-for-profit "Educate. Radiate. & Elevate," is offering free tutoring for students of color who have a 2.0 GPA or higher. Their educators are SEL focused, trauma informed, and highlight the importance and effectiveness of metacognition. If you are interested in nominating your student to participate in this program, please complete the form on the Educate. Radiate. & Elevate. website before May 15th. Additional details of the program can be found here.

Yearbook Update

There is a limited supply of yearbooks available for sale. Orders must be placed online through Friday May 19 at jostens.com. If there are any available books available after Friday, an option to be placed on a waitlist will be available on the website. Sign up on the waitlist through jostens.com.

On yearbook distribution day next week, any remaining books will go first to 8th grade students on the waitlist, followed by 7th grade, then 6th grade. Students on the waitlist should bring $38 exact cash or a check made out to Bednarcik on that day. An email will go out to families ahead of time if there are books available.

FROM THE NURSE'S OFFICE

NOW IS THE TIME TO SCHEDULE PHYSICALS!

Students who need updated physicals for next year - PLEASE plan NOW. Dr's office schedules fill quickly for summer. Call for your student to get their physical, if they will need one this summer. ALL Incoming 6th grade, 9th grade and students who participate in sports need to keep up to date with their physicals. For the next school year physicals need to be dated between 8/16/2022 and 8/15/2023 - for the 1st day of school. For participation in sports - in Jr High, their physical (standard IL or sports form) must be up to date (within 13 months throughout the season). For High School, they must have a specific IHSA/IESA Sports Physical form which has been completed by an MD/MA/Certified Advanced Practice Nurse, in addition to the standard IL physical form.

LOST & FOUND

Please make sure your students are picking up their items from Lost and Found. Once the school year ends, all items left in the school will be cleaned out and donated. They must have everything out of their Lockers by May 26th.

Going Home on a Different Bus

At times, students may need to ride a bus home with another student for after school care. The seating on our buses is tight, but we want to help this out as much as possible. If your child needs to ride a route home other than their own, please do the following ahead of time:

  • Both families (student going home on another bus and student taking the student home) provide a note to our Student Services office.
  • The note must include the names of both students, the date, and a parent/guardian signature.

These notes need to be brought to the office the morning of the alternate route. We will then provide a note for the students to show the bus driver at the end of the day. Students WILL NOT be able to ride alternate bus routes without showing the correct notes to the bus driver.

ENGAGING STUDENTS - Policy on cell phones & personal gaming systems

We want to keep learning a priority for all students at Bednarcik and minimize the distractions caused by cell phones and Social Media. We also want to encourage students to use personal devices positively within our school to enhance communication between students and their families while minimizing distractions to our learning environment.

Most all of our students are doing the right thing and following our schoolwide expectations. The information below is a reminder of the expectations at Bednarcik

  • Personal electronic devices are to be off and out-of-sight during regular school hours unless students have permission from a staff member. Please read the Student Rights and Responsibilities (page 18) for more information.
  • We know that cell phones can help communication between home and school and do not want to get in the way of that. Students may ask permission to use their phone when needed to communicate with families or can come down to Students Services to make a call on our phones. Families can also contact the school directly to communicate with their children (630) 636-2500.
  • When students are using personal electronics without permission, they will be asked to turn their device in to the office where it will be kept locked in an individual locker for the remainder of the day. Additional interventions and consequences will accompany the locking up of the personal devices:
    1. First Offense: Warning

    2. Second Offense: Lunch Detention

    3. Third Offense: 30 minute Detention

    4. Fourth Offense: 60 minute Detention

    5. Additional offenses will be supported with consequences that support the individual situation.

Thank you for your support in this.
