First Days of School! First Days of School!

zoom_out_map

It's the first day of school! Where do we go? What do we do?

4K and Kindergarten: Your first day is on Tuesday, September 3rd. They should arrive between 7:20-7:35. All children will meet their teacher on the Blacktop portion of our playground. School staff will bring bus riders to the Blacktop to meet their teachers. At 7:35, parents will say goodbye and teachers will bring students inside. A quick goodbye is almost always for the best; most students who are tearful quickly settle once they are inside. Students will go to the cafeteria; those who are eating breakfast will do so while others get to know one another. The same thing will happen on Wednesday. The first days of school will be devoted to building community and teaching students about the routines of Lowell. More details about arrival procedures can be found here.

First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade: Your first day is Wednesday, September 4th. All students should arrive between 7:20-7:35. FIRST GRADERS will join 4K and Kindergarten classrooms on the Blacktop to meet their teachers. All other students (2nd-5th grades) will go straight into school, entering through the front doors on Maple or through doors from the playground. Families should say their goodbyes outside and only students will enter the building. We will have lots of staff members in the cafeteria and in hallways to help give students directions to their new classrooms. If your student is eating breakfast at school, adults will help them get it and they will eat it in their classrooms. The procedure for the remainder of the school year will remain the same. More details about arrival procedures can be found here.

First through fifth grade students and families are invited to drop supplies off in their classrooms on Tuesday, September 3rd between 8:30-10:30. This will be a brief visit to the classroom; teachers are not available for unscheduled meetings with families or tours.

**Please make sure your student knows if you want them eating school breakfast or not.**

Dismissal: September 3 and 4 are full school days, so dismissal is at 2:30. Dismissal procedures can be found here.

New Visitor Sign-In Procedure New Visitor Sign-In Procedure

Beginning in 2024–25, we will be using Visitor Aware in main offices and welcome centers across the district, to screen anyone seeking access to our schools. The software is designed to streamline the way visitors access our buildings, doing away with the traditional pen-and-paper sign-in sheets in favor of a digital experience.

What is Visitor Aware? It is a digital platform that manages school visitors and communicates where they are in a school facility, which improves visitor accountability, enhances emergency preparedness and response and strengthens communication.

How does it work? Think of it as similar to a person using their image to unlock their mobile phone, which prevents others from accessing their information. Visitor Aware uses the same technology and has the ability to ensure those accessing the building are those visitors who have a valid reason for being in the building.

What does Visitor Aware help do?

  • Improve visitor accountability
  • Enhance emergency preparedness
  • Strengthen staff and visitor communication

Who can see the information collected and what happens to that information?

  • Visitor profiles may only be viewed by users specifically granted access by a school administrator. Profiles are not available outside the Visitor Aware administration area (including on check-in devices).
  • Data is stored in encrypted databases and individual data is separately encrypted to ensure security. Only recent photos are stored because any photos from previous visits as well as information from check-in devices are deleted at check-out.
  • Information is never sold, transferred or accessible by any person or service outside Visitor Aware.

Do students and staff need to register and sign in? Staff members and students do not need to register or sign in unless they are visiting another school. Visitor Aware is only for family members, community members/professionals and volunteers.

Additional information can be found on our website.

You can pre-register here.

How to Report an Absence How to Report an Absence

There is a new, convenient way for families to request an absence through their Campus Parent Portal.

If you have multiple children who will be absent, including students at different schools within the MMSD, this feature will allow you to select and request absences for multiple students at one time.

Entering an absence request is quick and easy, and can be done using your desktop computer or the Parent Portal app on your mobile device. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Log in to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account.

  2. Select More from the Navigation area.

  3. Select Absence Requests.

  4. Fill in the required information, including the date and reason for the absence.

  5. Submit your request.

For a quick look at what steps to take, check out our quick guide graphic. For more detailed instructions, visit this Absence Request Guide.

Our staff will be notified of the absence. While you may continue to request absences by calling the attendance line at 608-204-6602, requesting absences via the Parent Portal is an easy way to process the request from your phone, computer, or tablet.

Please note that even though an absence can be requested via the portal, it does not mean that the absence is excused until it has been reviewed by school staff. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Lowell Main Office at 608-204-6600.

Apply for Free/Reduced Lunch Apply for Free/Reduced Lunch

open_in_new zoom_out_map

We encourage all families to apply for the Free/Reduced Lunch program. Many families do not realize that when they qualify for FRL, they also get additional benefits, discounts and waived/reduced fees for athletics, MSCR, field trips, and materials. AND, you have to reapply each school year in order to receive benefits.

Furthermore, the percentage of students at each school that qualify for FRL determines that school’s eligibility for a variety of state and federal funds and portions of staff positions.

In order for Lowell to receive the resources that our school community relies on, it is crucial to have accurate and up to date information regarding how many children qualify for the FRL program.

Parents can apply for their Free & Reduced-Price Meal Application at SchoolCafé. Need to complete a Free & Reduced-Price Meal Application, but can’t remember login information or child’s student ID? No worries, just apply as a guest. This route will allow you to submit an application without any trouble. **Please make sure their DOB is correct so the system can match the correct student.

Welcoming Schools Welcoming Schools

open_in_new zoom_out_map

Welcoming Schools is a nationwide program being used in MMSD to create more respectful and supportive schools for all students, staff and families. Professional development, lesson plans, books and inclusive language are provided around family diversity, preventing bias-based bullying, gender and LGTBTQ+ inclusion, and anti-racism. Classroom teachers teach one or more lessons from Welcoming Schools each month. Lessons often use children’s books as starting points for activities and discussion. We know that in order for students to do their best learning, they and their families need to feel safe, valued and respected. Welcoming Schools provides resources and a framework for schools to help us achieve that goal.

Schools of Hope Schools of Hope

The Schools of Hope AmeriCorps Project is a dynamic community partnership between the United Way of Dane County and MMSD, fueled by impassioned AmeriCorps members and committed community volunteers. Its mission is to serve in local schools to provide literacy tutoring support aimed at improving the academic achievement of kindergarten through fifth grade students.

This year, Kathy Esposito has been placed as the Schools of Hope Tutor Coordinator at Lowell Elementary. She will work closely with school staff and leadership to identify students who are in need of additional tutoring support in literacy. She will then match those students with trained community volunteer tutors, in addition to tutoring students herself.

Schools of Hope tutors work one-on-one or in small groups with students who are in need of additional support in literacy. We ask our tutors to commit at least one hour per week on a consistent basis for at least one academic semester. Schools of Hope tutoring happens during the school day, so our volunteers must also be available during that time. If you are interested in being a literacy tutor at Lowell, please reach out to Kathy (lowell@schoolsofhope.org) or visit our website (https://schoolsofhope.org/tutor/schools-of-hope-in-madison/) for additional information and application materials.
