Culinary Arts Internship is under way!

Some of you may know that I am mentoring a group of high school culinary students in a food cart internship. The idea was to empower students to conceive of, design and implement a food cart to open and serve at Springfest.

The students have been hard at work and excited to execute their vision. They named the food cart "The Breakfast Shack" in homage to Mr. Shaw's 'Shaw Shack' (and their favorite class).

We are preparing enough food for 120 breakfast sandwiches and will definitely need community support to make this project a success! My wish is for the kids to be able to say, "Sorry, we sold out!"

Please help us spread the word in whatever way you are able. I'm sure the kids would be excited to see you all in line for a breakfast sandwich at their food cart. Twenty percent of the profits will go to support the culinary arts program.

All the best,

Janette Kaden,

Owner, Tin Shed garden cafe

This year, The Corbett Leadership team was honored to be partnered with Schnitzer Cares, an organization that encourages philanthropy and community engagement in high school

settings. This year our team was led by president Lilly Schimel, vice president Daniel Slevin, Greta Miller and Turner VanHee.

Our mission was to raise funds and awareness around the issue of animal welfare. We kicked off the year with a ‘Movie-on-the-Field’ fundraiser. We played the movie Ghostbusters and sold popcorn and raised an amazing $6,000. We continued our fundraising with a cornhole tournament and a 3 on 3 basketball tournament for the high school students and staff. These were both super successful events and helped foster a fun sense of community for the student body. Through our partnership with Schnitzer Cares, we raised a total of $16,468 for animal welfare. We are excited to grant funds to these three nonprofits to help them accomplish their good work: Portland Animal Welfare (PAW) Team, Out to Pasture Sanctuary, and the Exotic Bird Rescue of Oregon. We are looking forward to working with

Schnitzer Cares again next year.

Corbett School District Welcomes Its First Electric School Bus

On April 30, Corbett School District officially received its first electric school bus—a state-of-the-art Blue Bird T3RE—made possible through generous support from Portland General Electric (PGE) and a rebate from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The bus will provide daily transportation for over 100 students across multiple pick-up and drop-off routes. It's the first of what the district hopes will be many electric buses in a long-term plan to convert the majority of its 13-vehicle fleet to electric.

“This is the first step in doing our part to keep the Columbia River Gorge beautiful,” said Todd Williams, Transportation Director for Corbett School District.

The PGE grant helped fund two electric buses and the necessary charging infrastructure, while the EPA rebate covered the cost of the first vehicle. Future EPA funding or similar support will be used to purchase the second bus.

“We are very excited to partner with PGE and EPA to keep Corbett and the Columbia River Gorge beautiful, one bus at a time,” said Superintendent Dr. Derek Fialkiewicz.

This initiative not only supports environmental goals but also promises long-term savings in fuel and maintenance—benefiting both students and taxpayers. It’s a proud moment for the district and an exciting glimpse into the future of student transportation.

Track and Field

Corbett’s Track and Field team is over halfway through our season and we’ve already experienced phenomenal success. We have over 50 athletes competing on our team and through the first 4 meets we have already earned over 200 Personal or Season Records.

Personal improvement is the first way we measure success on our team. We also value the joy we derive from being with each other and from competing, the esteem with which we are held by competitors and the larger community and our performance compared to other teams. In all areas, our 2025 team has excelled.

We are led by captains Flynn Parrish, Anastaysia Brixey-Margeson, Matthew Caulfield and Logan Matias.

We are excited about the success we are experiencing this year and the foundation we are laying for future athletes.
