Register your child now for Kids Junction and secure not only a summer spot but one for the 2026-2027 school year, too.

Registration kicks off 3-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, at Sunnyside Elementary School.

Kids Junction is the district's school-age child care program. Our staff members provide a safe, creative environment for children currently enrolled pre-K through grade 4 during the school year. For summer, kids entering grades 5 and 6 also are welcome.

The program offers a friendly, informal atmosphere with activities planned to keep the children busy and creative. Children are given choices to participate in a variety of group and individual activities such as crafts, games, physical activities, and field trips.

February was a busy month

The AICE Hub is Red Wing Public Schools’ central support team for AI-Integrated Computing Education (AICE). It turns the Flight Path 2030 plan into action by coordinating tools, training, pilots, and feedback.

Last month, they built upon the foundation from the first semester and the Administrative Guidelines to support Board Policy 524.1 which governs the use of AI in RWPS. They also reviewed and validated a new process for evaluating AI tools for use in the district and formally approved Google Gemini, a generative AI tool available through our Google Workspace environment, and joined the SWWC Data Privacy Coalition to ensure that all AI tools used by staff and/or students comply with MN data privacy laws.

Lastly, the Hub reviewed the professional development plans for the second semester, including curriculum writing for the 2026-27 school year.

Contributing team members include Clara Ballard (RWHS counselor), Bill Emery (RWHS industrial technology teacher), Jeffrey Finholm (RWHS math teacher), Kristina Frye (RWHS counselor), Joshua Fuchs (RWHS principal), Sam Graves (RWHS counselor), Joanie Heineman (RWHS English language arts teacher), Bob Jaszczak (Superintendent), Samantha Kiecker (RWHS family and consumer science teacher), Nicky Larson (RWHS business teacher and BARR coordinator), Anne Rohn (RWHS biology teacher), Mandy Stokes (RWHS assistant principal), Nathan Stout (district technology specialist), Anne Robertson (communications manager), Emily Seefeldt (Director of Teaching & Learning), and Mick Wendland (Winger Flight Path coordinator), with strategic guidance and support from FP2030 consultants Laura Schmidt (National) and Tom Cozzolino (Northern Lights Collaborative).

Taking an interest in enriching California sea lions' lives

Fourth grade students participated in the Minnesota Zoo Zooms project, a STEM design challenge involving research and creating a prototype of an enrichment for a designated animal. The Minnesota Zoo chose the California sea lions for 2025-2026. After presenting in a Science Fair and to judges at Burnside, students submitted their projects to zoologists. Six Burnside groups advanced to present their projects last week at the zoo. See more photos on the Burnside Facebook page.
