Mid-Year Messagefrom Mr. CWalker School, December 2022

Dear Walker Families,

As 2022 comes to a close and we get ready for the holidays and winter break, I want to thank you all for your continued support of our Walker School Community. It has been an exciting school year so far with so many great accomplishments and positive moments. We look to keep the great momentum going thanks to the wonderful partnership with our staff and parents, providing the best school experience possible for our students.

Please read on for some fun December highlights and note the upcoming winter MAP schedule when we return in January.

I wish you a safe and healthy holiday, and I look forward to hearing about your winter break adventures when we all return in 2023!

Mr. C

Thank You for Our Giving and Sharing Donations

Thanks for a coordinated effort with our PTO and our Walker School community, I am proud to share the collection totals for our annual Giving and Sharing drive:

Clothing Collected = 21 items

Books, Toys, and Games = 107 items

Food Collected = 492 items

Total items collected = 620

5th grade students Will Mannor, Quinn Carey, Emma Schoenberger, John Elting, Mason Molis, and Meghan Walsh were chosen by their teachers to help count and pack up these items so that we can deliver them to local families of need with our partnership with the HCS Family Services food pantry and other local charities.

Luminaria Thanks

Thank you to our 4th graders Luke Schremser, Campbell Erway, Kira Tekwani, Liam Harrigan, Christian Gernot, and Claire McNaughton who prepared the luminaria bags that will be set out along Walker Avenue on Christmas Eve. Teachers selected our 4th grade elves based on their positive attitude, leadership, and role model qualities.

Also, thank you to the Natarelli and Boland families who have volunteered to be the elves on Christmas Eve who set out the luminaria along Walker Avenue! It is a beautiful tradition in which Walker is proud to participate.

Winter MAP Testing

See below for the schedule planned for Winter MAP testing when we return from the break. As always with such testing, please make sure your children are well-rested and have a good breakfast on the days of their testing. We will help ease any potential anxiety and create the best testing environment possible.

D181 Winter MAP Communication

Wednesday, January 4, 2023

Dear District 181 1st-8th Grade Parents,

We hope 2023 is off to a wonderful start! As we prepare to welcome our students back from winter break, the Department of Learning wanted to communicate our plans for administering the Winter MAP assessment to students enrolled in grades 1-8. The MAP window is scheduled for January 9, 2023 - January 20, 2023.

Why administer MAP?
Our District uses the data from this assessment in a variety of ways. In the classroom, it provides teachers with a means for monitoring student growth in reading and mathematics over time. At the District and building levels, MAP data help us set goals and evaluate initiatives. Finally, MAP will continue to be one of several indicators used to identify the impact of the pandemic on our students’ achievement and learning.

Administration Plan
Your child’s building leader and/or teacher will communicate the specifics of the building’s MAP administration plan with you. We ask that you make every effort to avoid appointments or other absences during these dates, so that we can prevent having students miss instructional minutes during make-up sessions.

Course Placement for 2023-24
Specific recommendations for math placement at grades 3-8 as well as middle school language arts and social studies placement for 2023-24 were approved at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, December 19, 2022. MAP scores are included, in conjunction with other data, in the requirements for students to move into advanced courses in all three subject areas. Course placement requirements can be found on our website at: https://www.d181.org/departments/learning/placement. Please scroll down to “Placement & Trajectory Documents” and select “Placement Criteria (2023-24)” to view the approved documents. Placement slideshows from the parent night held on December 14, 2022 can also be accessed in this location.

Preparing for MAP
A student who is well-rested, well-fed, and has a positive attitude about assessment is best prepared for testing. You can help your child do his or her best by considering these tips:

  • Make sure that your child is in school and on time on test days.
  • Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast before each day of testing.
  • Remind your child that this assessment is only one measure. Emphasize that you have confidence in his or her ability to do the best job possible.
  • Remind your child to listen to the directions and read each question carefully during testing.

Communication of Student Scores
We will continue the use of Skyward to communicate your child’s scores on MAP. This will allow families to receive their student’s results more quickly. An email will be sent alerting families when scores are visible. Directions for viewing results will be included in this follow-up email. Should a paper copy of the report be preferential, please contact your child’s principal.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tracey Miller
Director of Assessment, Instruction, & Evaluation

5th Grade Puberty 1 Presentations

Dear Parents,

On Friday, Wednesday, February 8 at 1:30-3:00 PM, Walker fifth graders are scheduled to participate in the Candor Health Education’s (formerly Robert Crown Center) "Puberty I" program. For this program, the boys and girls will be separated into two groups. This provides a unique female-only and male-only format for puberty education. Puberty I instruction compares female and male reproductive anatomy and introduces the physiological changes that occur during adolescence.

The “Puberty I" program has been successfully presented in schools as a way to introduce and educate fifth graders to this sensitive and important subject. The instructors from Candor Health have always done an excellent job at presenting the material and handling students' questions in a safe and caring way.

This year, we will host live in-person presentations from the Candor Health guest speakers for the boys and girls separately.

Should you wish your child not to participate, alternative activities will be provided at school.

We kindly ask that you review the form and submit by Friday, January 31.

Below you will find electronic access to the booklets that your child will receive as part of the Puberty I program. These booklets provide information on the physical changes that young people experience during puberty. Please note that both classes and booklets include basic information about the anatomy of the opposite sex.

Male Program (The Michael booklet): https://candorhealthed.org/puberty-1-male-booklet/
Female Program (The Linda booklet): https://candorhealthed.org/puberty-1-female-booklet/

We know that parents are the most influential role in a child’s life. For ideas on how to use the booklet, general tips for talking with your child and ways to get conversations started, click here. If you would like more information about the center, or the program your child will attend, please visit the Candor Health Education website at candorhealthed.org. If you have any additional questions, please contact Candor Health Education at (630)325-1900.

Sincerely,

Eric Chisausky
Walker School Principal
